Søren Aabye Kierkegaard was a prolific 19th century Danish philosopher and theologian. Kierkegaard strongly criticised both the Hegelianism of his time and what he saw as the empty formalities of the Church of Denmark. Much of his work deals with religious themes such as faith in God, the institution of the Christian Church, Christian ethics and theology, and the emotions and feelings of individuals when faced with life choices. His early work was written under various pseudonyms who present their own distinctive viewpoints in a complex dialogue.

Kierkegaard left the task of discovering the meaning of his works to the reader, because "the task must be made difficult, for only the difficult inspires the noble-hearted". Scholars have interpreted Kierkegaard variously as an existentialist, neo-orthodoxist, postmodernist, humanist, and individualist.

Crossing the boundaries of philosophy, theology, psychology, and literature, he is an influential figure in contemporary thought.

A representative collection of letters written by Danish theologian-philosopher Søren Kierkegaard during his life. In almost all letters in this collection, Kierkegaard addresses friends, colleagues, his fiancée, etc. and chats about all sorts of daily chores. To some of his contacts he talks about more serious matters, for example to his brother about Church business and to his friend Emil Boesen about his literary efforts.

In all, the letters are most entertaining and show sides of Kierkegaard that one doesn't experience from his philosophical/theological works. He definitely was a peculiar character, full of himself yet most charming to his loved ones. The picture which emerges from this private correspondence is of a restless, energetic and troubled young man. More specific, he seems to have been obsessed with his love for his once-girlfiend and fiancée Regine Olsen, especially his decision to break off the engagement.

For those readers who are interested to learn more about Kierkegaard's character and his ambitions and ideas behind his more famous works, this book is an absolute must-read. For Dutch readers reading this review: this classy edition is highly recommended!

It remains fascinating to learn how these people of genius combined both the greatest commonness and the utmost eccentricity simultaneously. Reading their private documents is an experience in and of itself.
