The Man With My Face

Who Am I?

I walked in the front door of my house. Cora, my wife, looked up at me sharply. "Who are you?" she asked. "Are you jo ..." I didn't finish. A man sat opposite her and as he turned toward me I wanted to scream.

This Guy Was Me!

Chick Graham entered his comfortable suburban home one evening to find himself already sitting in his own front room! Everyone treated him as a dangerous impostor. And when even his dog rejected him, he began to question his sanity.

I knew I didn't hate thrillers, despite what my ratings appear to declare. I just hate modern thrillers, not thrillers themselves. However, I also generally don't like noir fiction, so it can be a struggle to find my favorite sort of book. This one fits the bill. Not only is the victim an average Joe instead of a sexed-up superspy, but he also behaves in a very relatable manner, bumbling about trying to figure out what to do and who to trust after being betrayed by everyone he loves. In many ways, he is clever and rolls with the punches, but eventually

On this quiet Sunday morning, with a cup of coffee in hand, I turned the last page of this well worn pocket book mystery from 1948. I have never read this genre before, and after bringing myself back from 1948 to present day, I found that I have discovered a fun charming type of book I had previously not known.

It was a roller coaster of a ride, with many twists and turns. The first page of the book had a cast of characters and each one was fully developed. There was murder, intrigue, deception, robbery, attack dogs, (only when given a super secret word), romance and good detective work.

My copy of this book was very worn. Inside it has a previous owner's name, that of a F.A Mann. I wonder about FA while I was reading this book. He had held this book 74 years ago and enjoyed it as did I.

I thought about how my father would've been in his early 20s when this book was published. He would've enjoyed it. With all the 1940s vernacular and references to then current culture, I feel like I was able to time travel to see the world of which my father was part.

This is a very worn book, many people have enjoyed it, a tribute to the author, and the power of a story. I think I will now pass it on to my wonderful husband Mark!

When I first read about this book, it sounded like a Twilight Zone type fantasy -- a man comes home to find his double, who claims to be him. But it is, in fact, a noir crime novel and it is one hell of a ride. I won't go into how the plot unfolds; that would be giving away too much. If you like noir fiction, you just need to read it and take the ride yourself.

Secondo dopoguerra, San Francisco.

This is a gripping narrative of someone being impersonated and how he clears up the mess. Brilliant plot and excellent language.
