I only read Chapter 50- Arenaviridae
The author covers a vast array of material from the Arenaviridae family starting with a background on the history of arenaviruses, the different strains of arenaviruses, the different reservoirs for each, and how they fall under the two different categories: New World and Old World arenaviruses. The section describing the genome of arenaviruses and the functions of their four constitutive proteins is elegantly explained and simple to understand. The molecular mechanisms of transcription and genome replication are beautifully described and backed up by clear diagrams. The author then dwells into the usage of LCMV as a model of study to further understand the mechanisms of sustained viral infection and immune evasion and the common methods of quantification and study of the virus pathogenesis. Overly summarizing, the author portrays the complicated subject in an elegant, concise and simple to understand manner. A great chapter for those who have a general background in virology and are interested on expanding on this particular virus family.
