You're Wrong: Trans Polemics

Rate this book
An essay written in the form of a letter. The recipient is perhaps a stranger, acquaintance, or public figure who's written an ignorant polemic of their own about transgender people or gender generally, and has received backlash for it and is now complaining that they've been "canceled." The letter is written to an indignant and singular "you," but we all benefit from reading it, as a way to shore up our own arguments against TERFs and as fodder for our own critical thinking. It's long, engaging, deeply smart, and goes far beyond engaging with the ignorance of the day, arguing instead a utopian vision of what society could be if it were free from gendered violence.

I’m glad to have read this zine! I don’t agree on everything, but I think that’s to the credit of the author’s voice.

Some sentences were awkward. Ideas could’ve flowed from point to point more smoothly. Probably could’ve used some more revision. But, I understand that it’s important to strike when the iron is hot.

I want the author to credit more sources. I feel it is to the detriment of your argument to state opinions/ideas that are not original to you. E.g. work that black trans women do and have done makes your life easier. Show the work. Promote with your privilege.

That being said, the arguments are well founded and straightforward. I’m also a fan of the critic of many trans men online (I.e. “why do trans women get all the attention?”)

Prevailing opinion though? There’s a lot of good stuff here. I’m happy the author acknowledged valid counter arguments and agreements.

-Over focus on passing although fair because safety
-Argument with land ownership influencing gender policing is cool and I probably agree, but not fleshed out
-Gender as style and the destruction of binary could be refined- could use some brain studies and more natural inclination toward alternative genitalia.
-The bit about the misogynistic view that transfems make no sense bc we are giving up the power of being men so there is more violence against us is a good point that I often think about. I like the sex politics author references here too. This is also a thing in assault culture in Ancient Rome.

I think ultimately it’s in the camp of deconstructive work, which I know it doesn’t claim to be more than, but I often find myself craving more reconstructive work since I’ve already done so much of the deconstruction myself.
