Rabagliati`s strip " Apprentice Typographer" was one of the highlights of 1999`s Drawn & Quarterly anthology, and his first comic book Paul in the Country won the 2000 Harvey award for Best New Talent. This, his first graphic novel, is eagerly anticipated by comix connoisseurs who enjoy a sweet, unsentimental story about being a teenager and Rabagliati's crisp retro-modern 1950s drawing style. Paul Has a Summer Job continues the story of Paul, a Quebecois teenager in the 1970s, as he experiences the first conflicts of responsibility with his desire to be free. Paul is outraged that he is forced to stop his high school art training. But he's been asked to put art aside because his other grades are so terribly low. Defiant, he quits school and anticipates a summer of leisure. But instead Paul follows the path of so many Quebecois he lands a job as a counselor at one of the many summer camps in the mountains outside the city. There he finds himself guiding a motley band of kids, misfits and troublemakers, much like himself.

Whenever I happen upon this book in my apartment, and I'm not doing much of anything, I tend to pick it up and read the entire thing. This probably takes about an hour. It makes for an hour of astonishing contentment. I try to get other people to read it, but it never takes. I can see how it could come across as kiddy and maudlin, but I prefer wide-eyed and sensitive. So I'm a sap, is what I'm saying. Also, it's Canadian, and that's always weird. And there's a comfort with nudity here that's alternately jarring and refreshing. Obviously I still haven't pieced together what it is I like so much about this graphic novel, which may explain why I keep turning back to it. Please, someone, read it and like it. Validate me over here.

I’m not really a comic type of girl but I did actually quite enjoy this. I found myself actually being invested in the character’s lives which is rare for me and the ending was super cute.

Un autre Paul de lu! Un des plus touchants je trouve. Une belle histoire, les thèmes de l’amour, des souvenirs d’amour, les rencontres, la croissance/développement (coming of age). Très beau!

I add these notes in May of 2016:

. . . and this is the heart of it, yes: PAUL HAS A JOB, as many of have or have had! So what? Is this a joke?! A book about that?! But no, it is not a joke, there's not irony in it, it is what people do and it is worth telling just because it is common and not spectacular.

There's a kind of nostalgia in it for me, too, a white kid like Paul/Michel, basically his age, who had the kinds of summers. Not much happens and yet when you are living this life, everything does. Only the little things are magnified. And he honors that.

And now I have read several of his stories, linking them together in my head, Rabagliati's fictional autobiography told over decades of his professional work. Little slices of life, and what does it all add up to? A life! And the accumulation of stories is sort of amazing, on the whole! Beautifully drawn, all of it. In Quebec they call Rabagliati their Tintin.

Paul nous entraîne cette fois travailler dans un camp d’été. L’été où il se sent devenir adulte. C’est touchant encore une fois. Particulièrement la fin tout en introspection alors qu’on le revoit à l’époque où Rose est jeune.

J’ai bien aimé. Il m’a manqué un peu de références historiques comme dans les autres Paul. Mais j’ai passé un très bon moment en sa compagnie et celles des p’tits jeunes au camp!

PS: Je ne regarderai plus le ciel de la même façon!

Tierna historia de un adolescente que va a trabajar de monitor en un campamento y lo recuerda todo desde la edad adulta, cuando mitificamos esa época que es, sin duda, una de las más felices de nuestra vida. Las otras épocas todavía están por llegar :)

Enjoyable enough but unexceptional coming of age tale, at teen-aged Paul takes a job as a summer camp counselor--with no previous experience with kids. Of course, he learns about himself and develops bonds with the kids, which bear fruit year later when, as an adult, he ends up back in the same area where the camp was held, returns to the site, and finds a talisman lost there by one of the campers, a young blind girl. Rabagliati's style fits in well with the sort of thing one sees from other cartoonists in the slice of life/autobio (the Paul stories are largely autobiographical, Rabagliati has admitted) school, without providing much--for my eye, anyway--to distinguish it. There is some nice use of layout and silhouette here and there, notably in the final pages, when Paul shows his daughter the sky and the location of Le Petit Prince's planet. Certainly worth a look for readers interested in this style of work.

Un bijou! Des souvenirs plein de sensibilité, un présent pas toujours évident, mais ô combien ponctué de ces petits rappels de moments doux et heureux. Une belle histoire de dépassement de soi, de premières amours. Très hâte de la faire découvrir à mes élèves!

Suloista ja kipeää, kiukkuista, kömpelöä, hauskaa
ja herkkää aikuiseksi kasvamista. Michel Rabagliati kuvaa osuvasti sarjakuvallaan Paul has a summer job nuoren ihmisen elämän kesää.

Tarinan alussa Paul lopettaa koulun ja astuu tylsään työelämään, josta hän saa kutsun leiriohjaajaksi. Alkaa Paulin elämän mullistavin kesä, jolloin hän oppii paljon toisista ihmisistä ja itsestään. Lopussa aikuinen Paul palaa muistoihinsa ja viimeistään silloin lukijalla menee roska silmään.

Olen itse entinen kesäleiriohjaaja, joten samaistuin Rabagliatin sarjakuvaan totaalisesti. Muistot palasivat elävästi mieleen.

Une histoire pleine de nostalgie. Un récit qui fait la part belle à l'oralité québécoise, avec des retours en arrière. Très humoristique, authentique et sensible. J'adore.
J'ai de la chance de découvrir Paul à ce moment-ci de ma vie, au tournant de la quarantaine : je vais pouvoir lire tous les titres dans l'ordre, dévorer l'oeuvre en peu de temps... Je sens que « je viens de pogner qq chose »!

Rabagliati est un maître. Il donne d'abord l'impression de simplement dresser un portrait réaliste, documentaire, factuel d'une tranche de vie. Mais tranquillement, il vient chercher les émotions par en dessous, tire nos ficelles sans même qu'on s'en aperçoive et nous laisse ultimement désemparés et émus par une finale éblouissante.

C’est toujours à reculons que je lis un Paul quand il me tombe sous la main, mais je dois avouer que celui-ci particulièrement m’a charmé, m’a ramené à mes propres étés de jeunesse dans le bois, cette époque où on cherchait notre propre Dôme

Le passage de Paul de la vie d'ado à celle de jeune adulte, avec les premières responsabilités et les premiers amours qui suivent, le tout merveilleusement raconté par Michel Rabagliati. C'est touchant, drôle et plein de poésie du quotidien. C'est toujours un plaisir de retrouver Paul !

Une des tomes la plus fortes de la série. Rabagliati nous présente les émotions et les mémoires d’être ados entrants les monde des adultes avec un perspective honnête. La fin contraste l’optimisme de la jeunesse avec le pessimisme d’un adulte et ma mit des larmes au yeux.

J'ai lu cette BD une première fois il y a plusieurs années. J'ai décidé de la relire et j'ai été autant charmée! J'adore plonger dans les souvenirs de Paul! Cette superbe BD est un savant mélange de nostalgie, d'humour et de sensibilité. Une belle réussite qui vieillit bien!

Œuvre magnifique qui dépeint le passage de l’adolescence à l’âge adulte. L’histoire se déroule dans une camp de vacance où les liens tissés sont précieux bien qu’ils peuvent être éphémères!
