Mirage of Blaze is my favorite anime/manga drama, and rates in my top five of favorite series across all genres. Although the details of medieval Japan and its history might seem overwhelming or too descriptive for some, I find I enjoy completely "stepping back in time" as it were.

A special thing I really liked about this series is having both the modern and ancient perspectives revealed by the main characters in this dialogue and within the narrative. In the anime, it was sometimes a little confusing switching back and forth, but I think that was because of the time limitations and to keep the pace moving more quickly they couldn't explain everything.Within the manga however, scenes are constructed in a more understandable way, so if you like the anime it's absolutely tremendous to be able to read the manga as well, and learn more background information. Another thing somewhat difficult to understand in the anime, with all the long names, was how each character was interconnected, which clan they were from, city or town, etc. The manga clears this up also.

This is the volume that roughly covers disk three and early four, when Takaya mets his brother in modern times, who helps him remember more of his own past 400 years ago, but which ultimately culminates with his spirit being trapped in a magic mirror. I loved the extra insight into Takaya's pain and the signifigance of the sea.

Distant memories pressed against Takaya's chest: memories of Samegao Castle engulfed in flames and his last thoughts in those final moments. In his despair, in the midst of that unbearable nightmare, it had been his beloved Sagami Sea that had brought him peace.

For it had been his memories of the sea to which the eyes that had beheld war and defeat and so much death had turned to at the last.

As the blade had pierced his flesh, his last wish had been to return to this land... He had chosen death not to go to the Pure Land, but to return to his true homeland... to this sea he had longed for more than Paradise itself, for it was his only salvation, the only place where he could be free from pain.

We are also presented with more scenes that weren't incorporated into the anime that show us Naoe's thoughts about his love and obsession with Takaya. The duality of Naoe is a complex aspect of this tragic tale of unreturnable love, itself mirrored by the pained spirit of Takaya that needs but cannot accept the strength of Naoe's emotions.

As I read this volume, the end theme from Mirage of Blaze anime played in my head. In my opinion it is the most beautiful and agonizing sad anime song ever. This volume IS the heart of that theme. I loved it.
