This is my updated and *amended* review. I had a pre-published edition and the editing has since been fixed, according to the author.

My only unclear point is the Colonial Marn-is this a typo? If he is a "colonel," it is his rank. I will use the word "Colonial" since that is how he is addressed in my edition of this book.

Some spoilers.

The back of the book:

Set in Alaska 2060. 3 Lovers. 2 Species. 1 Way to Survive.

Set in Alaska in 2060, when April enters her Sophomore year at University, she thought Robert might be the love of her life, but as she discovers, she is hiding something inside her, something the rest of the world believes to have died out. She struggles with who she was and who she is becoming as she learns of a family she never knew existed and of enemies she will have to outrun, outfight or outwit to survive. In America, in the near future, a race of aliens trying to survive the death of their planet settles on earth. They are a peaceful race that has the ability to shift their DNA. The Rogue Militia fears and hates them, so the propaganda they put out in the American public is all negative. Their solution is to hunt down the aliens and exterminate the entire race. But of course a few survive here and there, and they mate with humans. The offspring are hybrids, and are able to take the shape of not any animal they touch as their parents could, but rather the main shape their parent took becomes their shape. April is a hybrid. Only she doesn't know it yet.

We meet April as she is just beginning her transition at 19. She has a steady human boyfriend named Robert, and as she changes to the beast for the first time, she meets Arken. He is a hybrid wolf as well. He is her wolf's mate, and Robert is her human half's mate. She wants Arken, but loves Robert. This is where the 3 lovers comes in, but I will spoil the fact that there is no sex, zero sex, not even the mention of sex (appropriate since it's YA), but somehow at the end, April , and Robert is thrilled. Even though it's not his...yes, there apparently was a lot of sex, but it was never even hinted at. I don't mind the sex being off screen, but it should be something along the lines of "He pulled me into his arms and kissed me." Not "He pecked my cheek and held me close." That was it. The next morning they went to class. I thought to myself that I was glad the 19 yr olds weren't having sex! But they were.

Again, the whole "three lovers" is never, ever, EVER clarified. It is more love-triangle than lovers. She never even has sex with Arken, but they share one passionate kiss and this is apparently where April gets That made me really angry because there is never any relationship or even the semblance of a relationship. We know he wants her and his pheromones make her crazy. That is all. Same with Robert...never, not once is there a passionate kiss between them and we are supposed to get that they are sleeping together?! WTF?! at the end, I was so shocked!

Now let me re-phrase I AM NOT UPSET THERE WERE NO SEX SCENES. I am upset and frustrated because there was enough of a relationship between both men that a pregnancy resulted. The reader should know if our heroes and heroine are sleeping together.

Moving on, the plot was good. Really had a lot of potential. In fact, I don't like sci fi and I enjoyed the concept and the idea of this story.

At age 19, hybrids of a race that landed on Earth about a few decades before this book takes place, begin their metamorphoses and change into a certain type of animal. April, our heroine, is transitioning into a wolf. She meets up with her twin sister (from whom she was separated at birth) Arquet. Their alien ancestors were hunted to extinction not long ago, and now the hybrid species is just trying to evade the Rogue Militia. I feel the book has a good dichotomy of April trying to reconcile both her human half, and her shifter half. The emotional and physical turmoil is there, her wanting to keep Robert in her life to anchor her. In fact I felt awful when she was captured by the Rogue Militia-but things happened too quickly, and too many shifters were lost to humans for it to be believable. The hybrids were stronger and stealthier than the humans, therefore the high number of losses on their side just wasn't believable.

***SPOILER ALERT***
I think the ending was pretty good, such a fantastic surprise to have "Colonial" Marn see the light, and help them turn around public opinion. And what happens with Bruce? He was a super hot, alpha male human who worked for the Rogue Militia, but helped them defeat the enemy. And April was attracted to him...but at the end, he went off to his bachelor pad. So, maybe he is in the next book?

My end result of this book, is that it has a great story arc, very new take on shifters and young adult lit. But I think certain parts of the story fell short, and I had a hard time getting through it with all the typos and parts of the story that felt very awkward.

The Hunted of 2060 is good and the storyline could be developed into a really great read (I hear there is a sequel!). I did however, struggle to get past the first couple of chapters with what felt like over-use of descriptive text. It did improve somewhat in the second half of the book and I am keen to read the prequel when Ami completes it. I am interested in reading and 'seeing' the The Hunted from possibly April's mum's view (not sure who's POV will be in control). A look at the Hunted from the eyes of those hunting could be quite interesting and entertaining.

Really I would rate this about a 3.75, so I never know how to do that here on Goodreads. Maybe sometime I will change the stars to a 4. (I'm not very good at rating things, but I do have a review if you want to read on...)

I really enjoyed the futuristic elements of this book. It was so entertaining to dive into the world Ami Blackwelder created. It’s fun to imagine if any of these things will actually be possible in 2060--which I could potentially see at 73 years old. I loved imagining all of the touch screens and holograms that popped out of watches, etc. My favorite aspect was the little robots that came to your table at a restaurant and you entered your order there. Very fun to picture.

At the beginning of the novel, it was a little hard to differentiate between characters because there were so many and most of them had unusual names. The pictures in the back of the book did help with this though. After about a third of the way in, it was easier to follow. It did take me a bit longer than usual to get into the story, but I feel that Ami really picked it up in the last 2/3rd’s of the book. I really liked some of the secondary characters (especially Diamond and David). I can’t imagine thinking you’re one person until nineteen years old and then finding out you have a brand new identity. Blackwelder really allowed me to imagine I was April and think about how I might handle the situation. It’s brilliant how we discover April’s new world with her.

The themes of betrayal and prejudice are key factors in this book. Humans betray each other, humans and hybrids betray each other and you can really argue that some of the hybrids betray each other as well. It’s interesting to see how prejudice occurs on both sides of the battle. Humans have their form of it and the hybrids have another form.

Over all, there are a few grammatical and editing issues, but I was able to get by those and enjoy the story. Sometimes Ami can get a little bit over descriptive, but it is really an enjoyable read. I hear a prequel and a sequel are in the works which should be very entertaining. It will be interesting to see how exactly the world came to be the way it is in The Hunted of 2060 and what will happen to the world after. I think it will be really fun to see if one of these books is from the “hunters” point of view, especially the prequel. What were their reactions when these aliens came to Earth? How did they come to the conclusions that the aliens were evil? Very fascinating stuff.

The fact that it was set in 2060 made even more interesting than it would have been if it were set in the present. From the very first chapter Blackwelder had my full attention. April had a lot going on in her life before she even went into the world of shifters. It was when she was introduced did she changed completely.
While I thought April's relationship with her boyfriend was interesting, her relationship with her pack was stronger. Even if she didn't want to admit it. While I admit I wanted her to end up with her pack instead, real love always stays together. Though April had a strong relationship with her pack I thought her relationship with her actual blood was interesting.
I loved how Blackwelder made up her shifters. With the different color skin, to the fact that they are always twins was definitely something I have never read about. Not only do you get to meet the ones in her pack but later on in the journey yo get to meet others. How they met, was very interesting to read.
While not only was the read great, but in the back there are avatars of what the characters are supposed to look like. I thought that was quit interesting, and it helped to look back upon just to imagine what the scene looked like. Ami Blackwelder wrote a book that was not only easy to read, but not too easy where you felt like you were reading a children's book. While sometimes I may say I would like to be whatever it is the book is talking about, not in this book but I mean it in the best way. Who would want to be hunted? Literally. Though it may have not ended exactly how I wanted it, but if it did the story may not have had an actual good ending.
The Hunted of 2060 was a very interesting read, and I will definitely look forward to more of her work.

April is nineteen and studying at the university when she begins to suffer from an odd illness. Her boyfriend, Robert, is always there to offer comfort, but April cannot understand the changes in her body--the incredible heightening of her senses, her strength and speed. Her lust for meat.

Then one day walking along the campus between classes, she is rendered unconscious. Waking in the forest, she sees a face exactly like her own. April’s twin sister tells her the truth. She is a hybrid. Her father was an alien shifter, her mother human. While April was given up at birth for adoption, Arquet, her sister, was raised with other hybrid clans in the forest. None of them trust humans.

The Rogue Militia is dedicated to wiping out the hybrids and April must fight for survival with the rest of her clan. Will she ever be able to go back to her life at the university and her sweet, loyal boyfriend, Robert?

Torn between her two natures, April longs for the serenity of her former life but she cannot stop the beast within her from emerging. She must learn to kill to save those she loves, but the enemy will not end the slaughtering of hybrids. The unarmed hybrids are pitted against warriors with modern weapons. It is April who must make the clans realize there are some humans who can be trusted—some who can help them in their battle for freedom.

Readers will love April. She is a worthy heroine caught in terrible circumstances who must stand up for the cause of justice. With one battle after another, the book is fast paced and full of action, but for me it was April’s tender love and devotion which made this book an enjoyable read.

The Hunted of 2060

Upon reading the description of this book, I was very interested in reading it. It didn’t sound like anything I’ve read before, which was a breath of fresh air.

The premise of the book is about an alien species coming to earth, and wishing to make a life for themselves alongside humans. Unsurprisingly, there are humans that are resistant to them, and cause the aliens to be hunted down. The aliens are shape shifters, able to mimic something they have previously touched, e.g. animals and humans. Because the aliens are being hunted, they try to save their species by mating with humans, and hybrids are born.

This book revolves around the hybrids, April in particular, and their fight for survival. An interesting concept, it caught my attention. I love how Ami brought the future to life, and how the hybrids could change shape. There were twists and turns that I couldn’t always predict, which definitely make for an enjoyable read.

It took me a while to become fully engaged in the story. I ran across a number of grammar issues, which kept throwing me off. Also, there were times when I would become confused with what was going on or how something was being described. In addition, it took me a while to connect with the characters. I didn’t engage with the main character as much as I kept hoping I would, but that may be due to the fact that she was young, and being thrust into a new and unexpected situation.

I see lots of potential with this book, and with the prequel and sequel that are scheduled to be released.

The Hunted of 2060, is an amazing read, written by Ami Blackwelder. The story line itself and the fact that it might possibly be our future keeps the readers attention. Taking place in Alaska in 2060 after an "alien" invasion it is the story of April and her progress in finding her identity. Plus takes the romance between three characters, to another level by instating the slight fact of prejudices that are placed towards different people in society. Together with April, Robert, Arken, Arquet, and more, the story of The Hunted of 2060 takes place.

April is in her sophomore year of university in Alaska, and unknown to her is her real identity. Being adopted April, has no clue she has a twin sister (Arquet) or that her father was actually a shifter. But when April turns 19 everything changes and she herself feels the shift in to a wolf take place. And as she feels the change, her romance with her best friend Robert begin to take place. But the main question through out the book is will Robert accept April, and her friends? Or will he give up the hybrids to the milita?

As a heroin April, is a great character, and Ami's characters are greatly creative and each have their own personality. Through out the book you can always identify a character with their clan because of their nature and their looks. But unlike other books I've read, The Hunted of 2060 has a lot of characters, but their organized and easily known by their names and clans. In the end The Hunted has a great plot and characters; making it simply easy to read.

The Hunted of 2060 by Ami Blackwelder was a fantastic read! Becoming a shape shifter is the easy part, staying alive is what becomes the challenge.

April knew there was something wrong as she wrenched in pain at random times throughout the day. She knew she must be careful who she could trust and confide in as well.

Her boyfriend Robert wanted to be there for her. He continually put up with April avoiding him, just wanting to become closer.

When April meets the sister she never even knew she had, she finds out she is hybrid, part wolf and part human. She must learn how to survive as she learns how to deal with the fact she is a shape shifter, and that she is being hunted by the Rogue Malitia, who wants to eradicate their kind.

As they fight for their lives, April is also fighting for love. Her human part wants to be with Robert, while her wolf part is drawn to another wolf named Arkin. As these three struggle with love, they must learn to survive each other as well as the Malitia.

Can they survive emotions and save their species before they become extinct? Find out in The Hunted of 2060.

Blackwelder did a fantastic job pulling the reader in from the first page. With everything we know of all books in this genre, she keeps a lot of originality to keep just the right twist on it.

I give The Hunted of 2060 ****1/2 (4.5) Stars, BK Walker, http://bkwalkerbooks.weebly.com

The Hunted of 2060 by Ami Blackwelder:

My Review: *****

Transport yourself fifty years into the future–to 2060. To a world with humans and a new species, a hybrid species, created by the interbreeding of humans and an alien species which arrived on Earth in 2020. The Rogue Militia, an organization set up to destroy them, exterminated the whole species. What remains in 2060, are the hybrid survivors, a species of shifters.

April is one such hybrid. Left at an early age with adoptive parents, her early normal life was spent surrounded by humans. By the time she reaches the age of nineteen, she notices changes within her. She also notices physical changes. She realizes that she is a shifter–she can transform into a wolf. She is introduced to her hybrid family. She also realizes that she is The Hunted–hunted by the The Rogue Militia, who having eliminated the alien species, now focuses on exterminating the hybrids.

Ami Blackwelder takes us on a rip-roaring adventure in the future. I was immediately drawn in by April and this intriguing story. Her struggles to accept who she is, torn between her loyalties to her hybrid clan and to the humans in her life. This is a fast-moving story, never a dull moment. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it and can’t wait to read more from this awesome author.

The summary of The Hunted of 2060 begins with: "Set in Alaska in 2060, when April enters her Sophomore year at University..."--I was immediately drawn into the world and setting that the author so deftly and effortlessly creates, in this futuristic novel. I really liked the part about the electrical newspapers "beam[ing:] in and out against the shop walls" displaying current events, ha ha!

In the chapter entitled 'Siblings' (Page 16), there's one line that reads, "complex themes [are:] interwoven into relatable story lines"--the main character is referring to the subject of English Literature, throughout the paragraph where this sentence appears. I think the universal themes mentioned in this section echo the main themes of Ms. Blackwelder's novel--kinda like how the pastor's sermon in Moby-Dick reflects some of the main themes in the entire book. This is how it should be done, as compared to certain blockbuster mainstream books, where names of classic books seemed to be dropped for no reason other than to create an added sense of melodrama and/or to make the main character seem `smart'.

I thought this was a well-written piece of fiction (which veered to "realistic fiction" very often), with well-crafted characters and a strongly developed setting--by an experienced, well-read author.

“I didn’t take my sky car. I wouldn’t have been able to navigate it with paws.” Love that line!
This book will appeal to YA readership, but with the current market of Twilight making supernatural/paranormal books popular this book will appeal to adults as well.
It’s told through the eyes of sophomore 19 year old Amy Blackwelder in futurist 2060 in Alaska. At the opening Amy is experiencing her metamorphosis through chills, pain and images she can’t explain. Her boyfriend Robert is worried, but Amy knows she isn’t *ill*, it’s something else, something bad.
She discovers she has a twin, and the twin explains to her what is happening to her body. The one thing I couldn’t understand is why Amy takes the explanations so calmly. Apart from that this was such an easy read; it flowed from chapter to chapter and kept me entertained all the way through. Amy was an interesting character and you could feel her indecision as she struggled between her two worlds: human and alien. Robert kept her human, but Arken pulled at her true alien/wolf side. It was an amazing read.

"The Hunted of 2060" is a novel that cuts instantly to the chase. This will suit well the teen-and-above audience that it is pitched at. Paced briskly from the outset, Ami Blackwelder creates a futuristic mix of sci-fi and teen-female-adventure. However, this novel has more about it than the current blitz of teen vampire novels. You can see how Blackwelder has taken the time to project a fully plausible future based on the best and worst of current society that we can all relate to without it being in any way Dystopian.
Written in the first person from the perspective of April, an everyday student from 2060 whose life is spun completely around when she discovers that she is in fact a human /alien hybrid, which in 2060 means that she's suddenly little more than hunted game riding on time. With nicely digestible chapter lengths flowing freely throughout and dialogue set for the teenage reader upwards, Blackwelder is a name to be watched closely in this genre.

This story starts out pretty much along the same line that many of the young adult books today do, a young girl knows she’s different all her young life and now those changes have manifested with physical changes. Usually it’s a vampire or a shifter. Well, it is a shifter ---of a different kind. Blackwelder manages to take an oft used hook and weaves her own awesome story that was well worth your time. In the year 2060, aliens have previously visited and supposedly been eradicated by the government. Little does the government realize that they have been able to reproduce and now the hybrids are coming of age and coming into their powers.
I loved the return trip to Ami Blackwelder’s amazing futuristic world. This time we get heart pounding action and a great love triangle as well as an ongoing saga. This book kept me flipping the pages till I got to the amazing end. While I kind of expected it, Blackwelder managed to totally blow me away with the ending.

The Hunted of 2060 by Ami Blackwelder is an original and inventive new story that kept me on the edge of my seat. Blackwelder has given a very different view of love, society, and growing up in the not to distant future. I doubt that I could give a summary better than Ami Blackwelder did, in fact I wouldn’t know where to begin without giving away too much.

I have to give my compliments to the author for writing such relatable characters despite the uniqueness of their situations. I found myself lost in the book and the world Blackwelder created for her characters. If you enjoy books about shape shifters, aliens, futuristic technology, romance and/or running from the government then this could be the story for you. Ami Blackwelder has created a new crossbreed with this futuristic/young adult/romance/paranormal thrill ride.

From the first page of ......you are drawn into an unimaginable world. Where peace will never quite reigns again. When April, a university student discovers she is part human and part alien, her world is turned upside down. A hybrid, with no real place in the world, she meets the twin sister she never knew she had, becomes part of a wolf clan and in turn becomes the hunted.
Ami Blackwelder moulds her characters so well, that you can’t help but get drawn into their lives. You see through their eyes, feel their pain and what it is like to be hunted. I was riveted to every page, willing the characters to survive and go on. The ending held a beautiful twist that made this story a fabulous read. I can’t recommend this book enough and give it a Rose Quartz 5/5 rating.

I was fortunate enough to get an email copy of this book from the author. I got about 1/4 into the book, and from what I read, it is really good.
I loved how the first chapters kept the reader in suspense, like a "what will happen next" feeling. I also liked that the author knew exactly when to stop doing that, so as not to be annoying.
The characters were entertaining and deep. I enjoyed the writing. However, the reason i decided to stop reading this book and not finish it, is because it is an ebook. I tried it and I felt this reading style doesn't' work for me.
Since the book wasn't sitting on my nightstand, I found I forgot about it.
When this book is out and I can get a tangible copy, I would love to finish the book and find out what happened to all the characters.

The Hunted of 2060 is a fast paced novel by Ami Blackwelder set in Alaska. The future comes to life as hybrid humans struggle to survive in a world that does not understand them. The foundation that Ami has created is a fresh look at the future that sweeps the reader to an unexpected climax. As an avid reader I found myself struggling with the first portion of Ami's work, and feel that this is not the high caliber of writing that Ami has produced in the past. But if you’re looking for a quick evening read and characters that you can connect too, The Hunted of 2060 is for you.

I am only giving it three stars because it is young adult fiction otherwise, I liked the premises or concept of the story and found the plot intriguing with its believable futuristic developments, both the human and hybrid thoughts and feelings were realistic making it a naturally thought provoking read. I wish I had realized the character illustrations were in color at back of book, they would have been more helpful for visualization techniques had they been in the front. I believe the author has a solid enough foundation in the “Hunted of 2060” for the sequel and prequel to be just as interesting, all in all a good read.

The Hunted of 2060 is a very powerful and engaging read for all ages. The world and characters created in the book are very skillfully described making you sympathize with them, get enraged with them, and at the same time learn with them.

The effect it produces lingers with you long after you've finished reading it making you think about things that are of global importance, reconsider your attitude toward human values such as love, sacrifice, humanity, justice as opposed to meritocracy, brutality and ignorance.
I enjoyed every bit of the story and strongly recommend it to everyone from sci-fi lovers to paranormal and fantasy fans.

A Young Adult novel set in a future that includes shapeshifters, hybrids, werewolves and a scary security force that persecutes anyone who isn't 'normal'. Even so, the main characters have some of the same preoccupations that they have today - family relationships and trust, loyalty, identification with certain groups or clans, and the attractions of the bad boy for a young woman even when she already has a lovely boyfriend.

The author includes some neat illustrations to enliven the text, including several pages of extraordinary colour portraits of the main characters at the back of the book.

I'm a huge fan of fantasy and the paranormal. I wanted to read this book as soon as I saw the cover, it just called to me and I certainly was not disappointed.

The Hunted of 2060 was very fast paced with beautiful descriptions, action, and a nice romantic story line . Ami made me feel like I was part of the world she created. She did a wonderful job of taking the shifter concept and making it her own. I highly recommend this book for all of my paranormal book reading friends who are looking for something new and fresh to read.

The Hunted of 2060 puts a unique twist on the shape-shifter tale. Set fifty years in the future, Ami puts us in an exciting yet controversial time. We quickly learn that all is not as it seems and that those who discover the truth about themselves will be forced to fight for their lives in a war they didn't know existed. The reader is drawn right into the thick of the story, and as we learn the truth about April's life, we become sympathetic to her plight. This story is exciting right to the very last page. I was thrilled to learn of the upcoming prequel and cannot wait to read it.

As a publisher of an established literary magazine, novels, short story collections, and poetry books, it is unusual for me to be able to sit down with a book and enjoy it without being conditionally forced to see the strings of structure, regardless of how well the writer performs their art. For me, Ami Blackwelder's book 'The Hunted of 2060' was a refreshing adventure - often scary, but also funny - an effortless read but with all the complexities and subtle nuances that a reader longs for when searching for life's treasured tales.

The author sent me a PDF copy to read and review.

The story in general was just way too out there for my tastes and preferences in novels. I've never read anything in the paranormal love/fantasy genre and was excited to try something new, but it turns out that it's a genre that doesn't catch my interest.

The story is very imaginative and detailed, but the staccato burst pace was annoying to me and I simply could not relate to any of the characters and I'm one of those people who has to like the characters or at least identify with them in order to enjoy a novel.

I have finished and I enjoyed the storyline. I have given 3 stars as I needed a little more from the writing, more depth and possible better editing. I have discussed with Ami. There is an Avatar 'feel' to this book. I really enjoyed where the story could take the reader and the imagination Ami has. I fell in love with Arken. He was a great character. Diamond and Unseen were my other fave characters. I am looking forward to the Prequel and sequel to this book.

This was a fantastic title with great characters and scenes that played out in your mindseye very well. I would highly recommend this to anyone that enjoys fantasy/horror/scifi/drama type books. With the holidays approaching this would make a great gift.

This book is a classic reason as to why I love being a book reviewer. I meet great authors who write so wonderfully that it blows my mind. April is such a cool character and I immediately connected with her. The Hunted of 2060 is a thrill-ride that shouldn't be missed.

Hunted is the first book in a series of standalones called Shifter Evolutions. I must confess that I imagine the book will be about shifters as soon as I saw the cover. The blurb just confirmed this but the story goes beyond the shifter clichés I have come to expect from plenty of paranormal novels. Before going a little deeper into the plot, I would like to talk a little about April. She is quite a believable character because, the way she was written, I could see the world through her eyes. I felt her doubts as she was changing, taking a mask off that she didn’t even knew she had. I was as scared and confused as her and yearned for the comfortable and even boring routine. Nevertheless, you have things inner feeling that you are something more and you can’t seem to be able to push that fact aside, want it or not. The author really outdid herself when it came to creating the heroine.
Regarding the plot, there were some aspects that were a little difficult to digest. In my opinion, adding shifters and aliens is a little too much. I had a hard time with the clash of science fiction and paranormal in the same novel. I mean, it was awesome the way the author painted a world full of all kinds of technology that make life easier. It was as if stuff from Doctor Who and Back to the future was mixing and had some shifters sprinkled on. Don’t take me wrong, it is creative and has a real and meaningful message. Nevertheless, I had a hard time picturing the alien-shifter race as the real deal, at least in the book reality.
There were some minor spelling mistakes. However, it is nothing that big that would make you lose focus on the plot. In fact, you get quite captivated by the characters. I felt the punch if discrimination, resentment, pain, betrayal, and confusion. I assure you that you will turn yourself in April as you turn the pages. You will cry her tears, hold her doubts, be pierced by her pain and wish her happiness because she deserves to know who she really is and live a life where you don’t have to choose sides.
I highly recommend this novel to any science fiction and/or paranormal novel fan.
