Betrayal Retribution Undying Love The Devil's Heel Special Content Alert: M/M A commotion near the open window drew his gaze. Above the rapid beating of his heart, he heard Lilyput, his beloved terrier, yapping from the bed. Drew's jaw dropped when a dark form slipped over the sill and turned to face him. He recognized the broad shoulders, muscular thighs and familiar stance. "You! What in hell are you about entering my residence uninvited?" Rogan smiled and stepped toward him with the nimble grace of a jungle beast. "I'd be pleased to enter through the front entry if you'd care to invite me in." Drew felt his throat constrict. "Stay back or . . . ." "Or what?" Under the amber candlelight, Drew saw every stunning feature of Rogan's face, including the gold flecks in his nut-brown eyes. "I'll summon Fallon, have him toss your sorry carcass off my property." "Intriguing but acrimonious. Do you wish Fallon to know about our sordid past?" "Fallon knows everything . . . "everything."" Rogan's eyes widened but only briefly. "That's twice recently I've heard those words, and I can't say I'm pleased. Still, it does simplify things." Drew watched Rogan make short work of his jacket and next, his waistcoat. Stunned into immobility, a shudder passed through him when Rogan freed the buttons on his trousers. Before Drew could blink, Rogan pulled a pistol from the scabbard about his shoulder and pointed it in his direction. "Take your clothes off, every stitch." When Drew hesitated, he pulled back on the hammer. "Do not think to test me; you know I'll fire." "You would shoot me?" Rogan shook his head. "No, but I have no aversion to shooting that mop rag on your bed." Drew's head snapped toward Lilyput and a short groan left his lips. Brockport would make good his threat. The man never bluffed. "Now," Rogan said with a nod toward Drew's clothing. With shaky fingers and rage bubbling up his throat, Drew unhooked the suspenders from his waistband and pushed his trousers and drawers over his hips until they fell at his feet. How he'd love to tell Rogan to go to hell and take his chances, but he couldn't risk Lillyput's life. How could he be sure the recent speculation about the man was nothing more than that, speculation? For all he knew, he'd shoot the dog and for good measure, finish him off before he left the bedchamber. His mind raced as the precious seconds ticked by. He could do nothing at the moment, but at the first opportunity, he'd attempt to disarm him . . . if he didn't succumb to the traitorous thrills snaking through his body first. "Step away from them." Drew obliged and lifted his head, waiting to see what Rogan would do next. He didn't look angry, but Drew couldn't dismiss the aura of danger sifting through the room or the cad's confident stance. Rogan meant business. "The shirt." "What do you intend to do?" Drew stalled for time and freed the buttons at a snail's pace before pulling his arms from the sleeves. Rogan flicked his chin up. "Toss it on the bed and drop to your knees. To answer your question, I wasn't certain what I intended to do. Until last night. After our little "tte--tte," I decided to finish what I started-fuck you senseless."

I was excited to read a pirate story. It seems like something that would lend itself particularly well to m/m romance/erotica and that it would be more popular than it is. In fact, that type of setting is pretty rare.
Unfortunately in this instance the premise that drives Drew from his male lover and into a het marriage is a very tired plot cliche that I saw coming as soon as Rory was mentioned. I hoped beyond hope it wasn't going to be the reason for the misunderstanding but I wasn't wrong. Additionally, while we get some background on the marriage, why Claudia was so willing to go along with Drew is never explained and Fallon's actions never make any sense.
The sex is hot when they actually get to it. However, Rogan's actions leading up to it while in the throws of anger are extreme. At one point, his actions and remorse for hurting Drew afterward took me out of story and made me question the relationship and the definition of obsession. For instance, pulling out a gun and threatening to shoot your exlovers dog unless he gives you a blow job, just isn't a sexy scene for me. I am sure others will disagree.
I love BDSM but since most of Rogan's actions in this regard were in anger it boardered and fell over at times into abuse to me.

Thus having liked to have seen a longer version of this story? Most definately. There's some angst, but that was to be expected since the reasoning behong it was called for. :snorts: Pirates, stubborn characters and the whole bit will bring about this to the fore.
Lines crossed, lack of communication and misunderstandings tore these two men apart and set them in two diff directions in life only to join up again. I always said communication is the key to success :snickering: Rogan may seem the brute, but his need for answers pushes him to take measures and matters into his own hands. Now he's not only a brute, add to that, he's impulsive. Drew always the daintier of the two, tongue of a spitfire doesn't back down, needing to have the last word. Both clash, but butt heads with the undeniable desires which burn between the men and for each other.
This story has no pussy-footing around, it's quick and cuts to the chase. Bam, bam, bam, action.
All in all a great write.
Although... I seriously would like a story on the twin bro Rory. Hmm hey maybe he pairs up with Fallon? :mischeivous grin:
There is a theme in my tag list that I’m not using often, but indead it’s very popular, the “pirates”; pirates, like sheikhs, cowboys and similar dream lovers were very popular among the women who knew about the world only through the books; pirates were of course always men with a noble soul (if not a noble birth) and the perfect lover for a damsel in distress. Of course when we have two men, the balance has to change a bit, but in The Devil’s Heel the change is minimal: Roger Brockport, nobleman and pirate on the side, is an handsome rogue and he has a quest, to conquer again Drew Hibbard, former lover who dumped him to marry a woman. And also this is not an uncommon situation, in a story that is set at the beginning of the XVIII century, it’s even a common trend.
But Drew is not exactly your typical gay romance hero who surrenders to the society laws (and not only society…): Drew’s betrayal is a reaction to an act of the same nature, he is in love with Roger, so much that for him is impossible to share. The first impression you have of Drew, from Roger’s point of view, is of an extremely handsome man with a mourning soul; I had the feeling he was also strong, and that Roger had a contendant of his same strength in him; I was building a story around a battle of wills with the winner who was uncertain. But when the reader has the chance to “meet” Drew, you realize that he is a completely different man from Roger; he is very emotional, easy to take abrupt decision, not always right decision, and more or less a man that tends to be led by other men around him. If you add to this the fact that the sexual relationship with Roger is a mix of rough and dominant behaviour, it’s not surprise that this novella can easily be classify also a breeches ripper, and in this case you have also all the right to do that, since the breeches ripping actually takes place.
One strong point of the story is that, despite being only a novella, it ranges widely, from ballrooms to ships, from bedrooms to cabins, and it introduces also some nice supporting characters. It’s probably a story that is more suitable to the romance lovers than the real historical fiction readers, but as I said at the beginning, the pirate lover is one of the most common in the romance imaginery.
Rogan Brockport is entitled to the rage he feels for being pushed out and left by his lover, Drew Hibbard. When word comes from higher authority that the young widower may very well be in peril on a suicidal mission to avenge his dead wife, Rogan accepts money and embroils himself in the situation. Hurt and resentment flow from him, though not as much as the physical attraction he still can’t deny for Drew. His only question is why, and he’s demanding that question be answered.
Drew Hibbard loved Rogan until he witnessed something that tore his heart from his chest, and sent him running to wed the opposite sex. When his eyes fell upon his lover once again, the present ceased to exist and all he could remember was the past they shared.
On the ship The Devil’s Heel the two are forced to come to terms with their split. Unresolved personal issues between Drew and Rogan were placed on hold, and those guilty of transgressions paid for their deeds.
When the truth came to light, only forgiveness and a healing love could hold them together and save them from uncertain danger lurking around the bend. The importance of life and seizing every opportunity of a future came to light.
The Devils Heel by Keta Diablo took me for a ride on the rough seas. I entered the lives of Rogan and Drew and held my breath for the fast paced ride of my life. Revenge mixed with passion and miss-communication endeared me to the two men struggling to find their way back to one another. I hoped they’d find a way to communicate in and out of the sheets. Holding my breath wasn’t in vain. I give this scorching read FIVE stars and a recommended read, and will be picking it up again.
Saucy, salty sailors and evil pirates all in one short novella would make one happy. It is filled with unbelievable plot and characters are so cartoon that it hurts, but whatever it was fun to read and it will be fun to forget whole book. Historical setting was put just for the show forget 18th century historical accuracy. Drew, perfect name for the gentleman of this era, was married and lost his wife Claudia in pirate attack. His wife was so understanding, not explained why, that her honorable husband preferred male sex, namely certain Rogan. Drew broke with Rogan for supposition of infidelity...seeing beloved in arms of another. Lately you would learn that it was Rogan´s brother Rory...twin. Oh my the long term spat was solved after several angry coupling. I nearly forgot the pirate plot Drew wanted to revenge his wife death and Rogan was trailing him on governor order and his own interest in Drew´s ass. Some unbelievable marine action and swashbuckling and lot of sex scenes. Not the best piece of the literature but not the worst either.
While this was nowhere as good as 'The Sin Eater's Prince' it was one entertaining, melodramatic romp featuring gay pirates on the high seas. Some of the languages used in the book was too modern, and Drew's character was a bit prissy for my taste. lol A weak 3 stars.

Review: Why do I get so excited when I see that Ms. Diablo has a new book available? Maybe it’s because I just know her characters are going to grab me into their world and take me on an adventure, one that I won’t want to end. On the other hand, maybe it’s because I know that at least one of her characters is so very Alpha with real feelings. Whatever the reason is, I was thrilled when given the chance to meet Rogan and Drew.
At the start of The Devil’s Heel I met Rogan, (I love this name) at a ball of some sort, and I learned that his obsession was a man named Drew, who recently lost his wife to a band of nasty pirates. Rogan and Drew have a past, which spans back five years before the time I met them at the party.
There’s a lot of hurt in both men, however, neither knows what the other is hurting over until later in the story and that is just one element that kept me glued to this lovely little piece in one sitting. Rogan is beyond angry with Drew for marrying a woman. He visualizes the man he loved having sex with her and he let that anger eat at him for five long years. I mean, imagine this. One day you’re happily in love with the person of your dreams, the next you’re not admitted into said person’s home, and out of his/her life for good. In this case, Rogan being kept away from Drew and he had no clear idea why. Next thing he knows, Drew’s married to a woman. That must have done a number on poor Rogan.
Rogan is assigned the job to protect Drew and in order to accomplish this, he must join the band of pirates that raped and killed Drew’s wife. But before he does this, he sneaks into Drew’s room and…Not telling you what happens there, you’ll have to read it and see the heat between these two men. No matter how hurt Rogan and Drew are, the passion between them is hotter than hell. It is in this scene that Rogan begins to question why Drew went and married. If Drew had answered then, I think the book would have ended and I’m so glad he didn’t.
Before I knew it, Rogan joins that band of rotten pirates and ends up kidnapping Drew. I felt sorry for them both for different reasons. Drew has every right to be angry, or so he thinks and Every time these two managed to be in the same room, the pages did indeed heat up.
The characters very well drawn out, the story, well told, and I loved my time with them on the ship and on the open pirate infested waters and loads of D/s sex scenes. I love a happy ending and this story did not disappoint.
