Ben Jenkins is a down-to-earth cop leading a quiet life in a big, empty house. Visits to the gay bars scratch an itch, but they don’t really satisfy, and though he’s used to the quiet, he recognizes that the empty feeling plaguing him of late is loneliness. It takes a police cruiser and a ten-speed to bring him together with Reece Withers, a bike messenger and photographer who's still waiting for his big break to arrive. Ben's pretty sure what he's feeling is love, but they both have old hurts that need to heal before they can live and live well... together.

L.A. Gilbert currently lives in a small British town where not much of anything ever really occurs. Jumping from job to job, she has no real qualifications in anything and is blithely proud of it. Between spectacularly failing driving test after test, she generally spends her free time reading about beautiful gay men, if not attempting to write about them. She is perhaps not the most outgoing of people, but is certainly one of the most cheerful.

Her aspirations are to eventually leave England and see a real, live whale (London's zoo is poorly lacking in that respect) and to perhaps one day hold in her hands a published copy of her own work.

Third read November, 2016 I can see how fussy I've become over the years because I was easily annoyed at the, I'm crying like a girl, bullshit, but this book still brings me to my happy place. Warts and all.

Original review

WOW! Just WOW!

This is one of those books that is ALL about the romance and nothing else. There are no car chases, mysteries to solve, break-ups, make-ups, drugs, vampires, aliens, homophobes or bitter ex-wives. Just two adorable men, both drifting through life, searching for something (or someone) to make their lives complete. They find each other and this book is the story of their journey. It is beautiful and magical and sweet and romantic and heartbreaking and will make you laugh with joy and cry with sorrow but leave you with the biggest, stupidest grin you have EVER grinned at the conclusion. (Especially when you finally realize what the title means.) I cannot say enough good things about this book. It is a M/M romance addict's dream-come-true. Fuck yeah baby, it's THAT good.

A million thanks to Natalie M. and Tina K. for the recommendation.

ETA: How did I forget my favorite part? Uh, duh! The sex people! The SEX! It was fucking AMAZING! Without losing one iota of the romance, these two boys striped the paint off the walls. Put the kids to bed, get a glass of wine and ENJOY!!!! You are gonna LOOOOOOOOVE the SEX!

Oh man....this book was

...totally swoon worthy!

Pretty sure I had a big fat cheesy grin on my face the whole time I read this one.

Ben and Reece were adorable.

Reece the biker messenger aspiring to be a photographer and Ben the cop who ran over Reece's bike.

There was absolutely 0 drama in this book! ZERO! That's like unheard of.

I loved Ben and Reece together!

This was a near perfect read....it was sweet, it was funny.

And the sex...oh boy

Highly recommend this one!

I AM A WITNESS

I have been given a gift. I was given the opportunity to witness what happens when two lonely souls find the other half to their heart. I got to witness them meet. To become friends. To share their lives with each other. To fall in love.

These men don’t have superpowers. They don’t shift into animals or have super human strength or speed. They don’t kick ass. They aren’t rich or powerful. They are just simple, every day normal folk doing simple, every day normal things.

And I was witness to it.

Reece had told him once that taking pictures was a small window into another person’s life, his way of witnessing just a small part of it. A completely bare and honest glimpse into that someone’s heart.

This is what I was given.

There is no major buildup to a grand climax here. There’s no message. There’s no angst. There’s not even a moral to this story. This is simply a snapshot of their life together. A window into their world. It’s just a story. But it is a beautiful tale that I feel fortunate to have been made privy to.

I cried while reading this story. A lot. But they were joyful tears. I don’t know if I have ever witnessed such intense love as I have seen between these two. It’s breathtaking. It’s real.

I WAS A WITNESS

I really enjoyed this fluffy read. There wasn't much angst or plot, but it was exactly what I needed right now and these guys were really cute and sweet.

There is Ben who's a cop and Reece, who's a bike-messenger (but wants to be a photographer). They meet (for the second time really) when Ben runs over Reece's bike.

These guys were all kinds of adorable, and Reece was also funny as shit !!

Best part though.....the sexscenes. Damn they were hot and we even got some dirty talk....me like :P

If you are looking for something sweet, funny and sexy, I can highly recommend this one :)

Prepare for major fluff! And lots of cheesiness. It was awesome.

description

We have Reece, a cute bike messenger and Ben, a cop. They meet, they fall in love. That’s about it. But somehow I fell in love with the cute dialogue (very rare in books these days!), the sweetness of it all, and the hot sexy times. This book felt like a warm hug.

And we also got some hurt/comfort. Yay!!

Reece was cute, Ben was sweet, and I fell hard for the big cop and the smaller bike messenger.

Read this for the feel-good factor. It's awesome.

Oh boy, what a sugar fest!

This is a very sweet comfy read, although this would have been better suited to be a novella. As a full novel, it was a bit overly long - with nothing exciting happening (except for the odd torn condom during some overly enthusiastic sex).

Ben, a cop, and Reece, a bike messenger/photographer meet, fall in love and move together. They meet each other's families and friends and Reece needs to overcome a bad experience from his past. But with Ben's love and understanding -> no problem at all.

A very cute read, but quite a bit too smooth for my taste.

3 stars!

I’m going to attempt to write a review for this book that does not give the wrong impression because I really liked 95% of it.

This did not play a part in my rating but let me start with the book's title, “Witness”. If you’re thinking there's going to be crime & suspense, forget it. I’m pretty sure the title comes from this passage in the final chapter:

"REECE had told him once that taking pictures was a small window into another person’s life, his way of witnessing just a small part of it. A completely bare and honest glimpse into that someone’s heart. While Ben had thought the words very eloquent, he’d never really been able to understand the meaning behind them. Not until now."

So although one of the main characters is a cop, this book is not a shoot ‘em up thriller. Witness just seems an odd choice for this book's title.

Next, and this was a biggie for me, the first chapter (15 looooong pages) of this book is very painful to read. I'm talking 'claw your eyeballs out' painfull. I’m all about character development but come on…

He woke up. He shut off the alarm. He stretched. He pulled back the duvet. He swung his legs over the side of the bed. He yawned. He rubbed his face. He walked to the window. He pulled on sweats. He pulled on a shirt. He walked down the stairs. He bent over. He tied his shoes. He went for run. He came back home. He got a bowl. He got the milk. He poured his favorite cereal in the bowl. etc. etc. etc. etc.

See, PAINFUL!! The first chapter could easily have been condensed into a few paragraphs of actual background information on each of the MCs and all the blah blah blah stated above just left out completely. If this hadn’t been recommended by someone whose judgment I trust, I would have abandoned it on page 4. And that would have been my loss because this is a good, solid, enjoyable read after the first chapter.

Now for the good stuff….The MCs, Ben and Reese, are two very likeable guys. Their attraction to each other is instant but it takes a little time for things to get going so there's not insta-love.
Ben and Reese have a good cast of friends and family members to enrich & color their story.

And the really good stuff…. There's sex in this book and it's really hot. Having two versatile and ‘manly men’ characters makes for some really erotic scenes. The author gives us plenty of details but it's passionate and realistic, not porny & overdone.

I do recommend this sweet and steamy romance. If you barely skim the first chapter and know what you’re getting into (pictures not murder & mayhem) you’re sure to enjoy it.

Ummm…I think I missed something here. I see a lot of my trusted friends and reviewers giving this a pretty high rating. And I’m a fan of LA Gilbert’s other works. But this one just did NOT do it for me. I mean, annoyingly so.

It was…erm…boring. *ducks*

The story went…uh…nowhere. *hides*

I was completely…ahem…disinterested. *begs for forgiveness*

Ben, a lonely 30-something cop, has a chance meeting w/ Reece, an almost 30 photographer/bicycle messenger. Neither has the ideal life and both are struggling with complacency as they go through the routines of their daily lives. And here in lies the first problem…the routine. *zzzzzzz* I was having a really hard time getting through the beginning of the book because, well, nothing really happened. And I kept waiting…and waiting…and waiting for the two of them to meet. And then I kept waiting…and waiting…and waiting for the two of them to go out. And then I kept waiting…(you get the idea).

And then when they finally do start getting into each other and flirting, it was so awkward. I get so…urgh…embarrassed almost, when authors try REALLY hard to have witty banter and write long flirtatious dialogue on page. I had this same issue with Take My Picture and the attempts at jabs and “witty” conversations. It feels like sitting in a restaurant next to a couple on a first date and you see and hear them going WAY overboard to impress and it’s just…uncomfortable. I had this same feeling reading Ben & Reece try and get to know each other.

Then, what ultimately was the nail in the coffin…as they grew in their relationship, Reece turned into this whiny, needy, annoying shell of himself and I wanted to just tell him to GROW UP and DEAL. (<-me. Irritated.) For Ben to stay with him took a monumental miracle, in my mind, and the balance of power totally shifted till it felt so one-sided…and really one as the care-taker and the other as the receiver. The author mentions this a bit and attempts to deal with this, but unconvincingly in my mind.

In any case, there were definitely a lot of sweet parts, some hot parts, few funny parts…but I just was not entertained.

SORRY!!!! :(

3 Stars…and that’s being generous…*yawn*!!

wit•ness
1. One who can give a firsthand account of something seen, heard, or experienced. One who furnishes evidence.

Okay, maybe I shouldn’t make assumptions, but based on the title of this book, I thought I was going to read about a murder or crime that one of the main characters…well, witnessed! Since Ben was a cop, I thought he would get involved with Reece, your average citizen, and him being the witness of some sort of incident of the criminal nature. Never assume! Oh, there was an incident, but it was more of an accident, nothing traumatic, just a way for them to meet. Okay, so I’m guessing the reader is the witness to the story, and since that would be me, here is my firsthand account of what I experienced and consider it evidence!

Ben and Reece are two single guys going through the daily grind of life. One does it happily and the other does it begrudgingly. They run into each other, or rather Ben runs into something of Reece’s. Instant attraction, they develop a relationship and go through the daily grind of life together, constantly exchanging niceties, touching, feeling, having sex…repeat…repeat…repeat...something happens to Reece…Ben takes care of him…they declare themselves to each other…THE END!

It was all very sweet, and I really did like the two guys, but I found myself skimming through the book. I felt like I was reading about characters in Pleasantville, everything was in black and white and repetitive. I wanted vibrant color to come into the story, a bump in the daily grind, okay there was a small bump… but, hell I just wanted a story!

So there it is!! My evidence as witness to this story! If you’re looking for an incredibly sweet story, this is the book for you. It wasn’t bad, I just wanted a little more to sink my teeth into!

And we have another winner! Three for three when it comes to L. A. Gilbert. God, can this woman write!

Witness, just as The Coil and The Ghost on My Couch, is a work of beauty. It's a book that is meant to be savored, not gobbled up (no matter how much you want to). It's about the building of a relationship, and praise the high heavens, am I ever glad to read a book where there was't this huge misuderstanding, everybody gets their feelings hurt, and it takes half of the book for the main couple to forgive one another. It's not that there's anything wrong with that kind of book, but for me, Witness was just so more realistic. If Ben and Reece had a misunderstanding, they talked about it! Wow. Didn't that save some serious heartache.

So, if you're looking for action of the ass-kicking kind, this isn't the book for you. If you're looking for everything I described above, then this is the book for you.

I loved the characters of this book so much. Ben and Reece were . . . beautiful. I loved watching their relationship grow. It was just so special. It made me feel all warm and gooey on the inside to read about. They were adorable, loveable, funny, strong . . . they were that as individuals, and then when you combine the two together . . . oh my. And the side characters! They're just as wonderful especially Roger, Reece's landlord. I just wanted to hug him and spend time with, he's just so cute!

As I've said for the two other L. A. Gilbert novels that I've read, if you haven't yet read Witness go do so now. Go on. Read it. Love it. Cherish it. And if you don't love it and cherish it at the end, then I think you've read the wrong book.

I did a reread, and this is such a sweet, funny story. There are some serious issues in it, but it left me with a smile on my face!
Ok, I first read this story in 2011 and loved it so I decided to reread it.
I still love it.
Ben, a sweet and gentle giant. He's a cop and has a heart of gold. He's a bit of a homebody and he's lonely, especially since his dad died.
Reece is an equally wonderful man, he's great with his elderly neighbor and just an all around nice man. But he's got baggage and he doesn't see how good he really is. He still lives with the loss of his brother, even a decade later.
But despite all that, there isn't any real drama and no conflict in this story, it's just a sweet, feel good story, about two nice men finding love.
There's a cat, a fish and a muppets obsession, good friends and wonderful parents.
A great hook to just sit back and enjoy on a lazy day.

Have you ever heard the expression "Comfort Read"? Well this book is exactly that...

... a sweet romantic story

Ben is a cop, and his life is more or less boring. I know I know... As a cop he can't have a boring life, but for Ben his work is just something he do to fill his empty life. After the death of his father he stay in their home, all by himself. His last boyfriend was a disaster, and he want to fall in love again, but have no idea how to do it.

Reece is by far my favorite main character of this book. Why? He is funny and totally screw up doing a job for the money, because what he really want to do (be a professional photographer) is for now just a dream. He life in a shit apartment, and is a doll, taking care of Roger, a old widower and his landlord. I mean, who in this moderns days have time to do it? Take care and give attention to someone like Roger?
But most of all... I love one obsession of Reece...
THE SWEDISH CHEF FROM THE MUPPET SHOW!!!!

So yes, this book is a romance. Both will be attract to the idea of finally have a long and real relationship, so both will do everything to keep the other.
I don't want to be mean of anything, it's just my honesty opinion: don't pretend to have more than romance and love scenes. There is no drama, no angst, and neither suspense... it's just loooooooooooove, and many (MANY MANY MANY) LMAO moments.

This was all about romance. No mysteries, murders or unnecessary angst. Just two fellows falling in love.. And this was their story.

The only thing that’s been bugging me is the title Witness… The only thing I can come up with is that this story is all about "witnessing" their love for each other. So shoot me if I’m wrong!!

Read this book if you’re in the mood for a happy, sappy story

“Aw, come on, admit it - you feel like Cinderella, don’t you?”
“No, Darren, I don’t. And do you know why?”
“No, sugar, you tell me why.”
“Because I’m a man. I’ve got a big fat one and I like to fuck other guys.” Darren was laughing over the phone now, and it made Reece grin.
“And Ben isn’t a prince, he’s a cop. A big, sexy cop who fucks like a machine. He’s a man. I’m a man. We’re men.” He nodded sharply.
“Now fuck off. I’m arranging flowers.”

Oh wow this was one of the sweetest stories I have ever read. Ben and Reece were an amazing couple. I especially loved the fact that Ben entered a relationship with Reece when normally he would just have sex with strangers. Some of the reasons I loved this book.

- It was a simple love story
- There was no big break up
- The characters were great
- It was not just about sex but emotion and family
- Plot wise the book was very nice it was simplistic which is nice to read

For some people, this book might be too sappy or just not for them. It's not an angsty book and the title doesn't fit the book as well as people would think. It's not a cop book, one of the MC's is a cop, but that's not the focus of the story. Plus it's not really the steamy, sexy book some might look for, though I did enjoy all of that.

Highly recommend this book!

A reminder that two stars doesn't mean I hated it; it was just...okay.

For me, Witness was an utterly predictable, boring story that included characters with no depth and a very slow-moving plot. I found myself looking at that little reading progress ticker at the bottom left corner of my Kindle and thinking, "this has got to be over soon." And then I'd see it was at 30-40-50-60 percent, etc.

*head, desk*

I never took myself for an angst lover, but apparently I do need a little something-something to help move a book forward, and there just wasn't any of that here. The characters were likable enough, I liked the idea of plot, and the love scenes were decent-to-hot.

This one just didn't work for me.

This has to be the slowest, most boringly over detailed opener I have ever read. If Cougar didn't keep saying how good it is I'd DNF at 3%

Omg this is ridiculous. If I had never woken up and gone through a morning routine before, this might be slightly more interesting as is, it's stupid. Whole thing so far could have been summed up with "he got ready for work" not he shut off alarm. Went down stairs. Stretched. Went for a jog. Blah blah. Got a bowl for cereal, it's blue he runs his fingers along the pattern. Upstairs. Turns on shower pulls curtain. Thanks about jacking off. Gets out. Drys off. Wraps towel around trim waist. Looks tediously at reflection and describes himself in tedious detail. Shaves. Sorry just spoiled the whole thing but in a few words instead of what the book makes feel like 1,000's

That's the biggest part of my morning, looking at myself and describing every feature. Not. This better pick up quick or it's bye bye.

OMFG then it switches pov and we get to see other guys morning routine. Wtf!?! Erg and another stare at yourself in the mirror and describe what you see. Boring

Oh sweet thank you. Least this guy slightly more interesting. Not hard to be since first guy boring as hell. This one even made me laugh with this thought. "you're not vain, you're single and a fucking bike messenger, add fat onto that and you'll die alone for sure."

Then we get their night routine and shower masturbation scene and some boring details of their days. Hoping would skip that but nope every boring detail must be included. With the exception of a couple jokes this was an extremely long and boring chapter. hope chapter two is better. As of now seems like the entire first chapter could have been cut. Nothing happened and it was so slow

Oh, bloody hell chapter two gives you pov whiplash. 10% and not sure if I want to struggle to read more or just mark it not finish able

Eh, so no editor? His mom asks who is roger he goes "roger? He owns the building I live in?" well you already said he owns the building so why is it a question now?

15% and looks like it might be getting slightly interesting

Around 42% I think the sex in the back seat just made up for all I the boring shit in the beginning. Wow

So it had its sweet parts but mostly this was just slow and boring mixed with a lot of way too corny. It needed an editor badly.

Why is it called witness?? This titles makes no sense

I don't want to sound repetitive but I think most of my friends get it perfectly right when they say that this book is NICE. Both Ben and Reece are nice people -- the "problems" of their life: Ben being without parents (he's 35 years old, though) and longing for a relationship, and Reece who "sabotages" his life because of a tragedy that happens in his past might be written there but it doesn't provide any deep emotional turmoil or heavy angst.

It might probably even be boring, if not for the fact that (1) Their conversations are witty and amusing, sometimes funny as Hell (The "Bert and Ernie" comment as being two names that must be close to every gay men makes me chuckle), and (2) There is one "big" incident in the middle where Reece gets attacked -- which leads to more progress in their relationship.

This is an uncomplicated read -- and I have to admit that sometimes I need it.

PS: I still wonder about the title though, 'cause "Witness" sort of making me think of murder / crime witness *grin*

Amazingly sweet & fluffy

This is just a really sweet, no angst, romance story. Ben and Reece are perfect for each other. Thankfully, there are also some very steamy sex scenes, which is fantastic because they temper what could have been an overabundance of sweetness.

A great romance story with no angst, miscommunication, stupidity or other manufactured B.S. to get in the way.

Thanks to Gigi for recommending it to me!

For some reason I thought this book was about a crime and protecting a witness. Not at all. This was a fabulous love story. I find myself in somewhat of a quandry.

I NEVER DNF a book.

It's not out of principle that I read to the end, nor is it a particularly conscious action. I find that I am, rather surprisingly, somewhat of an optimist and until I read the final line of a book that is causing me all sorts of distress, I refuse to believe that it may in fact be, as it appears to be 99% of the way through, utter shite. I have never had my initial opinion shaken up but I live in hope.

And so here I am classifying this as DNF, struggling against the tide of 3 and 4 star reviews which refute my very own opinion.

I'll be honest: this is not a BAD book, it's not the worst ever written, in fact - it's nowhere near that in terms of writing technique (I have read some artless prose, that's for sure...). The problem is that it's dull. As dishwater. Murky grey, soapy, suddy dishwater. And even that's more exciting.

What makes this all the more frustrating is that it starts off with such a great potential. I am sure it's not the first time I have expressed my penchant for uniforms (yum) - hot men, cute stories blah blah blah but I'm like 65% of the way through and NOTHING HAS REALLY HAPPENED.

The characters are barely developed and so superficially spun; there is superfluous information woven in that has absolutely no bearing and is of no real interest. Perhaps if I read on, there will be some sort of gratifying reveal, a resolution to all of this, however I just don't think it's likely. The dialogue is an endless boring exchange, their interactions are just so embarrassingly cringe-worthy and I assume the intention here is to convey it as some lustful, provocative banter. Honestly? If someone flirted with me using that kind of banter, I think I'd probably puke in my own shoe. Or something. Either way, it would not be a fast route to my pants.

So as much as this isn't the worst book, it definitely doesn't even provide the entertainment or discussion or just SOMETHING that awful books do with their flaws or controversy.

Sorry what was that? I even fell asleep writing this review.

This was a sweet, beautiful love story. There was no big dramas or angst. It was just what I needed to feel good about the world again.

Reece was a bike messenger who wanted to make it as a photographer. So far in his life it hadn't really happened for him, but he still hadn't given up on his dream. He was still living in his small apartment that he moved to when he was nineteen after leaving his family after a tragedy had befallen them. He still kept in contact with him family, but was a little embarrassed about what he saw as his failings in life.

Ben was a hot sexy cop. He was now alone after the death of his father. He was living on his own in the family home with only his cat Muddles for company. He was tired of the club scene and knew that he was starting to feel lonely, but was still happy with his life in general.

On a call to a sweet old man's house as part of his job, Ben meets Reece. There is an instant attraction between the two men, but neither did anything about it. When Ben then runs over a bike while heading home, he discovers the bike belongs to Reece and things develop from there. The two men start dating and this book is the truly moving story of them falling in love.

Over time, Ben starts to learn the secrets that Reece has kept from him, and with Ben loving Reece so thoroughly, Reece begins to heal from his demons.

There was a good cast of secondary characters. I loved them all.

This was a book that I will go back to time and again, when I need a pick me up. I can't wait to read more of this author's work. It was a truly lovely story.

3.5 stars... Hmmm. Well. I’m not sure quite what to say about this one. It wasn’t really what I was expecting. And that may be my fault because I’ll admit that I did *not* read the summary or any reviews. My bad. This has been on my TBR forever and it was one of my BINGO choices for the week, so I jumped in without thinking twice about it.

Maybe I’ve been reading too much Rhys Ford and S.E. Jakes lately and I’m used to over-the-top action. You know, people getting shot, cars blown up, kidnappings, transvestite drug mules, etc. I just kept waiting for *something* to happen. Anything. But it never did. Don’t get me wrong, it was a very sweet story, but everything was too perfect. I guess I needs me some drama. Or heartache. Or angst.

I will say this book had plenty of sex. Plenty. It was a very easy read, and I liked Ben and Reece well enough, I just wanted more of a storyline.

I threw out a request for a no gimmicks, feel good story, light on the angst and drama with some smutty goodness and this recommendation was thrown right back in like less than a minute. :)

There were a couple of issues, however. The first chapter or two were a lot of telling and I questioned whether I wanted to continue reading, but I did. Once Ben and Reece connected, there was some wacky head-hopping which never ceased and kept me on my toes. I decided to shove that aside as well. The dialogue was so engaging with tons of fun banter, the chemistry between the characters so spot on, the story too lovely with the right amount of sweetness, to allow anything to get in the way. The story left me with the warm fuzzies and I got exactly what I wanted from it.
