Okay, I know what you’re thinking. Tui? What kind of name is that? Is it short for something?

Nope. Among the many great things to come out of New Zealand (the Lord of the Rings movies, cats that paint, my mom) is a bird called the tui—not as well known as the kiwi, but a heck of a lot noisier!

I was born July 31 (same birthday as Harry Potter!) in Caracas, Venezuela, and lived in Asuncion, Paraguay; Miami, Florida; and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, before moving to New Jersey in high school, where I started doing theatre—mostly backstage work, because (a) it was fun, and (b) you got to hang out in the dark with cute boys. (Er, I mean . . . because it was artistically fulfilling, yes.)

I graduated from Williams College in ’98 and I currently live in Boston with my husband, my perfect new baby, and my adorable yoodle Sunshine (what’s a yoodle? A puppy that’s three-quarters poodle and one-quarter Yorkshire terrier, of course!).

Much to my parents’ relief, I abandoned my theatrical aspirations after college for the far more stable and lucrative career of fiction writing.

My first two official books were beginning readers, part of Grosset & Dunlap’s “First Friends” series for kids learning to read. MEET MO AND ELLA is tough to find now, but FUN WITH MO AND ELLA should still be out there somewhere.

My first novel for teenagers was THIS MUST BE LOVE, which retells Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream in a modern-day high school, from the POV of the two heroines, Hermia and Helena.

And now I'm writing in a new project called SEEKERS! It's a children's book series that I'm writing with Erin Hunter. Check out my blog to find out more!

Ch. 1+2
David has a dog named Bowser. Aiden has a cat named Meowser. For Charlie's birthday he wants his own dog, a dachshund or sausage dog.
Ch. 3+4
Mom, Aiden and Charlie went to go pick up Charlie's new dog. The dog didn't have a good name but Charlie chose King. King didn't like Bowser when they got home and kept barking at him.
Ch. 5
Meowser, Aiden's cat, met King and doesn't like him. King had to be in Charlie and Aiden's room during lunch and he chewed the horns off a triceratops, Aiden's toy. They went outside to play in the backyard..
Ch. 6+7 While Charlie talked with his friends on the phone, King dup up all of mom's bulbs she just planted with Aiden and had them all lined up in a neat line on the deck. King sat there proud of himself. Mom was not happy. Aiden and Charlie put them back in the ground.
Ch. 8+9
Charlie's friends came over. He was worried about King because of the garden and he is always barking at everyone. His friends helped him home up with a plan. They decided they could hide toys and treats and have King find them to help tire him out so he would stay out of trouble.

It starts out pretty cheesy...it is a kid's book after all. But somewhere a bit beyond half way through, it becomes so good and so cute that you just love it. And I laughed out loud a few times which is always a good thing.

I picked up a Y.A. book in the middle of the series because I'm a sucker for anything with a dachshund on the cover. It's my favorite breed of dog though I'm not sure it would be the go to choice for a preteen boy. Charlie is a middle child sandwiched between a surly older brother and a sweet natured little brother. There's a mom who has to work too hard because the family lost the husband and father.

There's a dog for the older brother and a cat for the younger so Charlie wants his own pet. He settles on a rescue dachshund who immediately bonds with him but terrorized the rest of the family (people and pets) with barking and destruction.

Bittersweet for a family still mourning, positive points for doing a rescue. Other than that, it left me feeling blah since everything dog wise and brother wise seemed to resolve easily. Hopefully, younger readers get more out of this series.

This month, I read the book "Dachshund Disaster" by Tui T. Sutherland.

This book is about a boy named Charlie and his dog, King. Charlie is the middle child in the family. His younger brother, Aidan, has a cat named Meowser, and his older brother, David, has a dog named Bowser. Charlie just wants a dog of his own. So, for his tenth birthday, Charlie's mom lets him get a dog. He gets a dachshund and he names it King. However, King is so disobedient that nobody can figure out how to train him. Charlie has to end the problem that he started.

I would recommend this book for children of all ages. I rated this book five stars because it was very interesting and it kept me on the edge of my seat!

This book is really funnyand cute.
That's because King the dog always acted like a king and got loud or buisy! Also I was a little worried when I learned that the owner had trouble withthe dog because he is adorable. But I soon figured out that he was trying to act like theking so I knew King couldn't help it!

If anyone loves a good funny book you should read this funny book! This book is really funny because there is King the innoncent looking adorable disaster making dog. Also the owner had a hard time taking care ofthis dog!

So you should read this book!

My favourite part was when King started to like everyone, not just Charlie. The worst part was when King was being mean to the other people in Charlie's family. My favourite character was King because he was a cute Dachshund. There was no worst characters because the worst part was caused by my favourite character. Auryn 12 years old, 2015

This book is great for young children. I read it aloud to my 5 year old. She found it hilarious. She loved the references to other books that she had listened to before. It was nice to see character development in the children as well as in the disastrous dachshund.
