Marriage can be a prison or an escape route. For me, it just might be both.
Evangeline More is not about to get married. Since turning twenty-one, she’s starting to feel like more of a bargaining chip than a daughter — and being betrothed to her childhood nemesis, Damon Johnson, is just one step too far.
When Evangeline turns up to the date arranged by their fathers, she’s ready to send him packing as fast as possible. But to her surprise, she finds another man sitting in Damon’s chair; a man who’s also known her since childhood. A man who is offering her a way out.
Shane Black may be taller and more tattooed than the last time they met, but his piercing eyes are still filled with care — and they still make Evangeline’s heart flutter. When her father is accused of murder, Shane is the only person she can trust. But as Evangeline starts investigating the circumstances of her father’s arrest, she’s forced to delve into parts of her past she had long since ceased to question.
Struggling to cling to her life, her independence, and her father’s business, Evangeline is determined to see justice served. Problem is, someone is very intent on making sure that never happens...
A contract of love is a NA murder mystery romance, with twists and and turns. Tropes-> Marriage of convenience, slow burn, one bed, fake relationship, he falls first and harder.
I really had much fun writing this story and I'm currently working on the second book, which will be out in May-June! Stay tuned.
I was lucky to get an ARC for this book! That’s why I like to thank the Author Akaku for this :)
I can say that this book got me hooked, from start to finish. We got pulled into this story with the opening line, "“I’m not going to marry that stupid son of a—”" and this was a way to start, wow! Evangeline got promised to a man, called Damon. (A big Jerk fr). This was all planned by her father and his best friend David Johnson. (Also a big jerk) She is against it. (ME TOO!!) On the setup date made by the two fathers, another person appears Shane Black, who offers her a deal… and the story takes it's turn. SO MUCH happens in this book the twists and turns, the slow burn! And I was so sad to have reached the last page with the cliffhanger! The story was pure gold! And I can’t wait for the sequel! Akaku did an amazing job in making me hate Damon and his father! Both are despicable and manipulative! Evangeline’s father was too blind to see that but he has his own reasons why I guess… Evangeline was homeschooled and never really had any friends, or contact to other kids, besides Damon and his friend. Plus her mother died… that poor thing Evangeline. I felt bad for her but she was a cute and awesome character and turned badass while being the boss of her father’s company. I loved the FL really much. And now to Shane Black! The way he was described, I imagine him really hot! I felt this way too. I blushed while reading and he’s so handsome in description and the way he treats Evangeline. I want a Shane too. AND I wanted them to kiss soooo bad!!! He made a deal that he wouldn’t go far in touching her unless she kisses him and on their wedding he slipped his finger between their mouths to keep the promise!! I was melting…. The tension building was too good! But I was shocked to learn about Shane’s secret … Anyway a lovely story! And I’m glad Evangeline found a good friend like Imani so at least she had someone to talk to. Because this was needed! But the ending shocked me :/! Now I need to wait again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A story of a murder mystery with a marriage of convenience romantic suspense? Sign me uppppp.
Before I get to this review I hope to anyone who read this take what I have to say with a grain of salt. Even if I recommend a story to people in whatever rating that it is just know I speak with full honesty!
To begin with can we take a moment to appreciate the COVER? mhm wait until book 2s cover because that’s even more breathtaking.
This was such a a fun story to read, I had the time of my life with this. And knowing me I LOVE marriage of convenience so of course I ate it up. The plot, the twists and turns were absolutely immaculate and had me at the edge of seat every minute. And I absolutely adored Shane and Eva. However, and this is just a critique on my end as something I know will be improved in the future is the execution of the writing. I think everything was beautifully done and the message came across wonderfully, but more than once I found the word choices, descriptions and sentences structures off putting and not particularly “correct” per say. Perhaps it’s the English major grammar of me coming out but I felt like it was important to discuss.
This is such a great story and given that this is just one of many works that may come in the future I see significance beyond belief coming through. And as a reader I would love to help point out the things that could be fixed in the future such as character descriptions was not eloquently put forth. More than often I found the use of some of their descriptions as unnecessary or even too bland. Sometimes some sentences also didn’t feel like it was Englishing if you know what I mean.
That being said this is where I tell you that I actually implore you to read this book seeing as this is not written in the native English speaking perspective. Because this story is truly wonderful and something completely different that what is normally to be read. I hope that when you guys read this you enjoy it as much as I did 🫶🫶
this review is written after i've reread the book so you must believe me when I say the book is a HIDDEN GEM.
like the mystery, the romance, the he's obsessed with her, he falls first, she falls harder, the moc, the secret soft touches which add angst...
HELLO, I LOVE THIS BOOK This book is so underrated. Hell please read this if you believe in me.
Also the suspense, mystery???? SO GOOD. I liked david at first and even damon and I was like "mhmhmhm 😋 enemies to lovers" because I thought they would be like ivan and jasmine from FLWL by zapata but he was more like "eww he's a rat, he bodyshames her 😒"
Shane is literally perfect but WHAT ARE HIS INTERNAL MOTIVES. PLS DON'T BE A *suspicious morally asshole 😏* lmaooo i'm too dramatic.
I was lucky to have received an ARC for this book! "I'm not going to marry that stupid son of a -" The PERFECT intro. I was hooked from the very beginning. Akaku captures the essence of slow burn in this epic show on a marriage of convenience/murder mystery. If that's your piece of cake then you're in for a treat. The storyline, the characters...the PLOT TWISTS had my neck snapping left and right. I could not be more obssesed.
PLEASE !!! i was hooked from the first line alone “i’m not going to marry that stupid son of a — ” 😂
this is a slow burn, marriage of convenience, mystery romance, where he falls first and harder. i absolutely love these characters. the way i blushed every time shane popped up should be immediate jail time 🫠🤭
the tension was so yummy i absolutely ate it up !! but that shocking news about shane’s secret had my jaw on the floor. this book is filled with all the twists and turns. i didn’t believe anyone at one point LOL
and this sweet, poor evangeline 😭 miss girl can’t catch a break. i’m just glad she had someone like imani !! i love seeing besties in books and their friendship is EVERYTHING 💓
i still can’t get over that ending because WHATTTT !! i’m so obsessed that i need to start book two right away 🏃🏻♀️
Usually I don’t write reviews but this book got me on a roller coaster ride Evangeline did go through so much but still managed to keep her sanity I loved it that she didn’t trust Shane right away and the tension was brutal but so good When they finally kissed I had butterflies in my stomach Shane and Evangeline have amazing chemistry and I loved the fact they took time to understand each other and especially her trying to manage the company while trying to help her father out of prison The cliffhanger at the end made me run and read the next book
I got this book for and ARC review and I really enjoyed reading it. This is a romance book, but Akaku really leveled up on the FMC. Evangeline is such an inspiring character. She is thrust into the top position of her father's company and must prosper to keep it afloat despite all of the players against her. She accepts a marriage proposal from her childhood friend Shane, but Evangeline doesn't just fall in love and let him take care of her problems. She has agency and she is here to get shit done. She grows throughout the book handling these rich business men in her own way, learning, adapting, and trying to make shit shake for her company. And the little romance between her and Shane had me smiling. Especially with that damn teddy bear. I can't wait to read the next book!
This book is chaos. There are several good ideas but woven together in a whiplash does this matter sort of way that makes me miss almost every single point.
Most of the conversations are cringe withe unrealistic points that just have me lost.
This book is indeed thrilling to read and makes you unable to wait for the next one to be published already ! The way Evangeline grows into a strong independent woman , makes her a favourite of mine, Imani is also a favourite character! Love this book !!
I was lucky to get an arc copy of this book, and I've read it in two days! The writing style gave me wattpad vibes, which isn't bad for my taste 😌 the tension between Evangeline and Shane was insane ❤️ But some parts of the story were too short or undetailed, and I think that some scenes/ plottwists were unnecessary...
I didn't like the writing of this book, but the plot is nice! It just felt like fanfic or books like Twilight (so...published fanfic) where you can't stop reading but you hate yourself for it a bit 😂 I won't be reading book 2
Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
OMG I loved it. Fake dating, corporate shenanigans, murderers and secrets and “get your hands off her” vibes. Think Dynasty in book form.
What I liked… Evangeline is a little on the innocent side but not naive which makes me like her as she navigates her life after her father is accused of murder right after she refuses to marry his friend’s son. The tension between Eva and Shane is so cruel to the reader. I love it. Shane is very confusing and I lover trying to work out characters like him. He clearly has an agenda at the begining and some odd behaviour throughout, but I wanted to trust him for Evangeline’s sake. I love how Eva is conflicted over her father for wanting her to marry Damon but at the same time he has his moments when he sticks up for her.
What I didn’t like… It was too short. But that’s because I loved it so much and wanted more so no actually a bad thing on the book’s part.
Final thoughts… I’m up for book 2 the moment it’s ready.
This book was absolutely insane— and I loved it! It had all my favorite tropes: marriage of convenience, slow burn (and I’m talking like serious slow burn), and of course, a man who treats the fmc like a freaking queen.
Shane Black. Please— this man was so hot for no reason! I was swooning over him 24/7– and damnnnn does he have a way with words! If I could just have my own Shane in real life, I’d never ever complain again!
Evangeline More. Girly over here had to deal with her whole life doing a 360° (and not in a good way). The only way she could get out of a horrid future and save her father’s company was by marrying the one and only, Shane Black. She tried to keep it strictly contractual, but by the end, she too could not resist her charms.
The book was the perfect amount of smutty and fluffy (fluff might’ve been a bit more though haha). The sexual tension was definitely eating at me the entire way through, and the plot twists kept coming one after the other! Not to mention, and fair warning, it does end on a cliffhanger, but it’s just all the more reason to read this while waiting for the second part to come out!
Overall, I loved this book, and am definitely excited for the next one!
*side note: i was given an arc in exchange for an honest review*
This book was amazing and I enjoyed it a lot! It included all of my favorite themes: a marriage of convenience, a slow-building romance, and a man who treats the female protagonist with great respect.
Shane was particularly attractive and skilled with words. I found myself swooning over him constantly (like for real)!!!
Evangeline had to deal with many unexpected changes in her life, and her only way out was to marry Shane.
Although they initially planned to keep their relationship purely contractual, Evangeline eventually couldn't resist Shane's charms (like, i understand u girl i couldn’t either).
The book was a perfect balance of steamy and heartwarming moments, although there may have been more fluff than expected (but i 10000% loved that).
The sexual tension was present throughout the story, and the plot twists kept coming.
Buuuuuuuuut, the book ends on a cliffhanger, so I am eagerly anticipating the sequel!!!!
I wanted to tell a special thank you to the author, thank you for trusting me and my opinion!!! You did such a great job with this book and I can’t wait to read ur future papers!!!
(P.S i had an ARC of the book)

What a fantastic book full of intrigue and mystery. There are fantastic surprises. The author is new to me, and I will be reading more from her in the future. I bought the second book.
If I was told this book was written by a 13 yo on wattpad I would absolutely believe it. Silly dialogues, shallow plot and a downright gullible and dumb heroine.
The writing style of Akaku Red in her fascinating novel, “A Contract of Love”, is very intriguing and will keep you turning the pages to find out what turn of events lies around the next corner. The book centers around the protagonist, Evangeline who is supposed to marry a man chosen by her wicked father. I was surprised by turns of events such as Evangeline’s husband-to-be not showing up for the wedding. It turns out to be a saving grace that there is another man waiting for her there. They have known each other since childhood and although Evangeline is hesitant at first, things unfold in an ever more promising way. This book will keep you guessing as to how it will unfold. Highly recommended.
Evangeline is set to marry a man picked out by their father's regardless of her thoughts on the issue she Is reluctant yet Resigned. Evangeline sets up a meeting with Damon, but is surprised to find the handsome Shane in his stead. This new meeting sets off a series of unintended consequences, along with The arrest of her father eventually now has to figure out if her life is not quite as fairy tale as she believed it was. Evangeline's investigation begins to uncover Some unsettling revelations and she will have to make a choice. This whole book is set against the backdrop of Shane's hotness and their chemistry which leads to some explosive moments. A great book with intriguing characters.
A contract of love by author Akaku Red is a romantic and suspenseful story about Evangeline More´s journey through her coming-of-age life, the investigation of her father’s arrest, his business and her love life. Her feelings, her experiences and her affairs are weaved with the mystery, intrigue and thriller of the plot, giving birth to an entertaining, cohesive story that's difficult to put down. The author did an excellent job by establishing a clear tone and atmosphere for the catching story. To sum up, the plot of the story is very good and there are certain twists and turns that make the tale even more interesting and difficult to put down.
A Contract of Love by Akaku Red is an intriguing novel that mixes romance, suspense, mystery and action to keep the readers hooked until the end. The protagonist Evangeline will soon realise that the least of her problems is an arranged marriage. She will have to go through many dangers not being certain of who she can trust. I really liked this book. The narrative is interesting and the story is coherent no matter how many twists and turns it includes. The author only makes sure that the reader is captivated all the way through. This shows the mastery of the author. I will certainly look for more books by her and I strongly recommend this one.
“A CONTRACT OF LOVE” is a romantic suspense novel written by Akaku Red. In this fiction, we meet Evangeline More, a young woman destined to marry Damon Johnson, but what happens when Shane Black appears with a proposal? What will Evangeline do? Will she follow her heart?
This suspense had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The characters seemed spectacular to me, super well described and drawn. The plot is original and fresh and the balance between telling and showing is spectacular.
This is the first book I've read by this author, but I look forward to reading other titles by her. Highly recommended!
Wow! This book began with Evi completely making me fall for her! A strong character whom I even stronger as the novel moves forward. Having to take over her father's company and learn to deal with realities she has been sheltered from, we watch a strong young woman become even stronger, with a vengeance. So much is packed into learning about Evi and her being thrust into the evil of huge business. She is a captivating character that I can not begin to imagine where is next! I cannot wait for the next book, Ms Red. I am hooked!
Normally, I do not ready crime stories. But this book surprised me. I really enjoyed reading this.
The story is very interesting, because there is always something new that comes up. The author ensures that the reader is captivated until the end. The characters are well described. What I like best is that you can see character development in the protagonist. The story ends with a twist that leaves the reader curious for more. I can't wait to read the second part.
