Once upon a time, Brandr was the scourge of the Baltic Sea. His band of Vikings terrorized coastal cities from Helsinki to Copenhagen. Brandr doesn't wonder where he went wrong. From the moment he'd allowed Kyle to crash on his couch, everything changes and the mighty scourge has fallen. There was no escaping the go-go boy slumber party from hell. If he thinks living with the young vampires Kyle, Henry, and Jamie is bad, though, wait until he accidentally blood bonds with human surfer boy Tyler. Brandr has never blood bonded with anyone, never created another vampire, never even had a human servant. Now he's feeling Tyler's emotions through their bond, and everything he thought he'd buried with his human life is bubbling back to the surface. Trying to control it only makes things worse as he pisses off Tyler, Kyle, Henry, and Jamie. When Tyler and Kyle join forces to teach Brandr a lesson, things really start to heat up.
This is a fun short read that made me laugh out loud in places. It is actualy the third in a series of short stories, and now that I've read them in the right order, it makes a lot more sense.
Brandr is a pretty unlikely hero, a Viking who was turned into a vampire and is trying to survive in the modern world. He's managed to 'collect' three younger vampires who now live with him, having decided he is their 'vampire Lord'. Brandr thinks that is ridiculous, but has too big a heart to kick them out.
Tyler, who becomes accidentally bonded with Brandr, is a bit of a strange character himself. His recent breakup has left him emotionally vulnerable, and that becomes his biggest weakness.
Written with a wonderful sense of humor, this is a story about a group of very quirky characters who happen to be vampires. All that does is add some spice to their love life and provide some unexpected opportunities for having fun.
This is a really hard book to describe. It’s very complex for so few pages but it makes sense when you are reading it. I’ll try. Brandr is a Viking who is now a vampire and author. He has taken in three young vampires to show them the ropes. They are like roommates with benefits but he is probably closest to Kyle who is a prostitute. He considers that he now lives in a vampire frat house and he tries to be stern but they just ignore him. Here’s an example of Kyle’s response when he starts one of his lectures:
“Really. I can recite the whole thing from memory by now.” Kyle’s expression turned stern and he lowered his voice. “Back a million years ago, before the invention of fire, when I was looting and pillaging on my dinosaur–”
Brandr is out walking when he falls and Tyler accidentally ingests some of his blood. Much to Brandr’s surprise it makes him bonded to Tyler, they can feel each other’s emotions AND physical sensations which freaks Tyler out. Brandr tracks him down to “make him happy” because he hates feeling negative emotions. Kyle is pissed because he feels Tyler is competing for Brandr’s affections. It ends up with them all in bed and it’s hardly even a HFN, it’s a multiple fuck-buddies make me happy for now ending but they are all so damn likable you’re good with that. As I said I could write pages trying to describe it all, for 60 pages it had lots of stuff in there that made me smile and feel for Kyle and Tyler. I quite enjoyed this one. It was a pleasant surprise and not as serious as I thought based on the blurb.
This is a story filled with all likable characters that are endearing and adorable, even grumpy Brandr. The premise is interesting if a little hard to follow. Both Brandr and Tyler become bonded accidentally but the process that causes that leaves a lot of questions and no real answers.
The bond itself seems to be a bit ... finicky. Brandr can feel emotions and a physical sensation of Tyler and vice versa for some things and not for others. Brandr can feel Tyler having sex but he doesn’t seem to feel him enjoying a meal, getting intoxicated, surfing or getting frustrated at work. I expected Tyler to feel more of a void when Brandr is “dead” sleeping or to feel it when he feeds but that doesn’t seem to be part of the bond. It was hard to follow.
Kyle, Henry and Jaime are interesting characters that add to the mix greatly. They added much color and insight into Brandr’s new living situation. Even with the vampire frat boys from hell to torment him, I had a hard time seeing Brandr as a young, good looking, 25 year old in a 1200 year old body. Too often he was described as old, set in his ways and grumpy. I pictured him more bearish. It was hard to create the right mental picture to go along with the personality. Loved the throne though.
Jay Lygon writes a good story that ends more 'Happy We Figured Out How To Live With This, Maybe' rather than 'Happily Ever After.' I can see where the originality tried to kick in to a genre full of copycat ideas but this one may have fallen a little short both in pages and in full plot and characterization.
Good paranormal m/m romance about a surfer who inadvertently ingests some vampire blood and then realizes he can feel what the vampire's feeling... and vice versa.
