By accident I read Stephanie Ashcraft’s sequel 101 More Things To Do With a Slow Cooker before I read 101 Things to Do with a Slow Cooker. Just as well, as the sequel is better than the first one. Still some good recipes here, but Ashcraft definitely saved the best for the sequel.
I bought this book with high recommendations from more than one friend however, after buying it and really browsing through the recipes, I was quickly disappointed. Nearly every recipe contained one of the following: Onion soup mix, a "cream o'something" soup and/or a bottle of something or other. Here's a good example of a recipe list: 2 lbs. chicken breast and a bottle of teriyaki sauce. I wish I were joking. Honestly, I could have come up with most of it myself. I appreciate the time-saving deliciousness of slow-cooking and I am a fan, however, this book was uninspired and worst of all... NO PICTURES!
Not bad, got some ideas. These are super simple recipes that only call for a few ingredients. I made the chicken that you cook with barbeque sauce and pineapple chunks. Simple, delicious. I plan to try the cherry dessert - 2 cans of cherry pie filling, dry yellow cake mix sprinkled on top, 1/2 cup of melted butter, cooked on low for 4 hours. Why not? Might be good.
Well, one thing I must say about the cherry cake recipe. Using dry cake mix wasn't the best idea. Next time, I'm actually making the cake mix batter into a liquid before I put it over the cherries. However, I ate the cherries. They were good.
2 lbs. of chicken 1 bottle of BBQ sauce cook on low for seven hours
Guess what? I had already figured out that recipe on my own. I really was hoping for some more creative recipes and this book is just not helping. The other annoying thing is the lack of pictures of what it is supposed to look like.
Great ideas. Seemed a bit short, but then again, it says right in the title "101 things". I'd have preferred "101 Main Dishes..." I'm not interested in making desserts in a slow cooker, but it doesn't mean someone else wouldn't be.
If you take the time to weed through all the recipes that call for mutiple cans of creamed soup and packs a dried onion soup (can we say salt attack!) there are a few good ideas in here. Wouldn't purchase, but worth a rent from the library or a friend
So many good recipes, and its all organized very well. It's got recipes for drinks, dips/fondues, soups/stews, beef, chicken, pork, and desserts. Each recipe is decently cheap when it comes to buying the ingredients too. As a poor college student, these recipes are top tier.
The 101 Things to Do Cookbook Series makes a great gift for the beginning cook. Each one contains quick, easy and impressive dishes to make. Great step by step instructions, which is very helpful because there are no pictures. At the beginning are helpful hints, which is almost the best part of the cookbook.
I have had a slow cooker for a few years now, but only used it about three times. Ive never really figured out the glory of cooking for eight hours, and didn't like most recipes. This book had several that sounded good. Maybe I'll try one someday.
My family wouldn't have dinners without this book! I use it more than any other recipe book!!!!! Awesome!! And I love the author, my friend Stephanie! :)
