Guarding witnesses? All in a day's work for deputy U.S. marshal Carly Masterson. Protecting the judge who was indirectly responsible for her mentor's death? That's another story. Still, she won't let harm come to Judge Nicholas Floyd, or the niece and nephew in his care. She's determined to do the job right, and not let her emotions take over--no matter how wonderful it feels to be accepted by the little family. Can she let go of the past and learn to trust again before danger finds them once more?
Lynette Eason grew up in Greenville, SC. She graduated from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, and then obtained her masters in education from Converse College. Author of twenty inspirational romantic suspense books, she is also a member of American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) and Romance Writers of America (RWA). In 1996, Lynette married "the boy next door" and now she and her husband and their two children make their home in Simpsonville, South Carolina."
First of all I figured out who it was at the very beginning and it made me so annoyed when Carly practically spelled it out and she was still confused. Girl! Then there was her over trusting nature with the bad guys. I'm not saying that being trusting is bad but there is a time and place for it. When a man's life is being threatened you might want to consider all angles thoroughly instead of feeling mean about sticking you head in other peoples buisness. It's your job. She doesn't trust her own partner with her idea either!😭
I was hoping the romance would be better. Carly doesn't know what she believes about God and Nick has a strong relationship with Him. There was a lot of physical attraction thoughout the book which was kind of...awkward. I was so stinking proud when he decided not to purse a relationship with her, even though he was attracted to her, because of her unbeilf and lack of faith. Then the very next scene he ditches his conventions and tells her that he likes her...it irked me to say the least.😫😮💨
Then there's his late wife. I hated the way she was painted in such a negative light when honestly Nick had a LOT to do with her becoming so bitter. He says that his career took off and he pretty much stopped being around her. She became lonely which is understandable. To cope with this newfound loneliness she wanted a baby since Nick wasn't around anymore. It would have been heartbreaking to find out she could have one and therefore woukd stay lonely. Then he wondered why she changed when he didnt give her the light of day.😮💨 I'm not blaming only him. I'm sure they could have worked it out but it just annoyed me how little he seemed to care about her. Instead we're given a picture that Kate is SOOO much better for him because they're truely happy😑
The last thing that just made this book a miss was also the fact that the man wouldn't listen to ANY advice the cops gave him! They would tell him to hide and he wouldn't which put the cops in more danger then necessary. Especially at the end. Why he went to confront the man who had kidnapped his nephew is beyond logical understanding and it got a man shot! The man even warned Nick not to and he ignored him😡😤
This was just a miss for me, I really wanted to like it but I just couldn't. I have nothing against the author and I did like the faith content. It was just a let down in the mystery and romance department which was basically all of it.

This one was a neat twist by having Carly assigned as protective detail to the threatened judge Nick. They have to keep his niece and nephew safe as well and solve who's trying to sabotage court cases. While it was enjoyable throughout, there were a few things that didn't add up as far as what they expected of the bad guys, and then I spotted the bad guy at 15%, so the mystery itself was a bit simplistic. I liked the characters and the fuzzy-feels ending.
After having read all seven of this author's books that are published by Revell, I knew she is one of my all time favorite authors and I would enthusiastically read anything she wrote!
I was not disappointed, Protective Custody was an awesome suspense read! And let me just say, while this is a Love Inspired Suspense book, so it is relatively short at just over two hundred pages, Eason's writing is equally amazing no matter the length of the story!
One of the things that drew me to this story specifically was the fact that it was kind of the opposite of a lot of romantic suspense stories in that the heroine is in law enforcement (U.S. Deputy Marshal) and the hero has the less dangerous profession (Judge) until he gets death threats that is! But anyway, that was such a cool twist and I loved how unique it was! :) The characters were so awesome, definitely new favorites of mine! The suspense was incredible! My guess about one of the villains identity was actually right, though I was stumped for a little while before I figured it out! But, I must admit, I did not see the second villain coming, so I was very surprised to find out who that was! While I'm not sure this one will quite make it my favorites, I did love it and definitely anticipate rereading it in the future! There was only one scene in Protective Custody that I didn't love and that was because the thing I am most afraid of was in it, I won't say anymore here for fear of spoiling the story. But if anyone wants to know what it was, feel free to personal message me and I'll be happy to tell you! :)
I highly recommend Protective Custody, and I cannot wait to read more of Lynette Eason's absolutely awesome books!!!
I find I prefer the romance novels where the couple has a former connection. Nick and Carly were friends, so the relationship is easier to buy. I love that SHE is part of HIS protection detail.
2 1/2 - It was just too predictable and such a cheesy unrealistic ending. I normally like her books better. Was a church book club pick or I wouldn’t have read. Written in 2010 so I think more recent books are a little better.
I seriously love Lynette Eason's writing...That being said this book was being a love inspired romance predictable, and I found imo in spots it lagged a bit but over all, it's a good read. The storyline follows a Judge who is trying a case against a well connected family and they want him off the case after losing his wife and sister in a car accident 2 years previous Judge Nicholas Floyd refuses to recuse himself from the case. Threats against his life bring protection by U.S. Marshals. Carly Masterson and her partner Mason Stone find themselves once again protection detail for Judge Floyd and his Niece and Nephew just as they were 2 years previous...this time however Nick isn't married... and Carly is struggling to find her faith in God again, as well as finding herself having feelings for the Judge....Can she do her job without getting herself or him and the children hurt?? and will His unswerving faith be a boost for her...
Carly Masterson, a US Marshall is assigned to protect Judge Nicholas Floyd and his niece and nephew when he is told to throw a case. The Judge's integrity and sense of justice won't allow him to even though his family is threatened.
The Marshall's are on an intense timeline to keep them safe while they rush from one safe house to another with the bad guys on their trail.
The story was intense, suspenseful, and laced with the Judge holding on to his faith. Carly, on the other hand, has issues with turning everything over to God. Things haven't worked out so well in the past.
The characters were well-developed and I connected with them right away, especially Nicholas. The ending wrapped up nicely and there were enough twists to keep things moving along. It kept me guessing up to the end.
DNF. It's clear this story will only hit more of my pet peeves, so I'm quitting a bit before halfway through. Deputy U.S. marshal Carly and her co-workers know that Judge Nicholas has had a death threat and they're going to be acting as bodyguards. Shot fired and man down because apparently none of the U.S. marshals are wearing body armor. They know it's a serious threat now, but none of them put on body armor and so they're dropping left and right. Sigh. And the judge doesn't do the sensible suggestions given by his bodyguards, so they're put in worse danger. And when the kids are threatened, rather than get the judge to the safe house, they take the judge TO the ambush point before it's been cleared of danger. Really? Also, the bad guys seem pretty obvious but so far no one has tried to figure out who they are, simply reacting to the bold moves made by their enemy.
This is a great suspenseful mystery with a small amount of romance scattered throughout.
Carly Masterson is a US Marshall who has been assigned a new duty station. She isn't thrilled when she sees that she is responsible for guarding Judge Nick Floyd. He let a murderer go who then in turn murdered Carly's partner. Can she keep her personal feelings for Nick out of this assignment?
I figured out pretty quick who the main person involved in all the activity was going to be. There were not so subtle clues throughout that led me to that conclusion. It didn't stop me from reading the book though, as I wanted to see how it all played out.
This was a very good story with likeable characters and some frightening action at times. I had a few problems, the worst being the book I received from Amazon was defective. This is the second time it has happened. Every page had some type of code where apostrophes and quotation marks should be. Next, the villains were so obvious I was just waiting to see how they'd be caught. Finally, a main character was shot and left in critical condition but never mentioned again. Since Lynette Eason's characters become so real while you're in their world I wanted to know he made it. I was hoping he might be a main character in a sequel.
I just found this book so-so. I must say o started with the audio book and couldn't even get past the 2nd chapter. I did NOT care for the narrator. She was extremely choppy and it felt like the story had no flow to it. The books itself was alot better. That being said the plot was extremely obvious. I even had the bad guys figured out by the 1st safe house which made the rest of the book a little frustrating. It also made the book predictable with no real suspense. Was hoping for more with this type if plot.
This was a great storyline regarding Judge Nick and Marshall Carly. The two paths crossed on another case where Carly and Hank were guarding Nick. Now a new threat has appeared and Carly and Mason are guarding Nick. Carly can’t seem to get over the attraction she has toward Nick as well as anger with him for releasing a criminal that killed her last partner Hank. After Hank was killed, Carly lost her faith in God. Through this whole ordeal, Carly finds her faith. Loved it.
Thank you so very much Lynette Eason for doing a great job with this fantastic novel! Loved it from beginning to the end! Loved all the characters especially that Nick was steadfast on his relationship with the Lord and through that was a tool in GOD'S Hands to bring Carly back to her faith in God. Was encouraging, that through all, God WILL never leave His Own. Oh, almost forgot, l-o-v-e-d the action part! Thumbs up Lynette!
I think this book is very good. The characters are believable and the situation while not unique, is very important to the storyline. A judge and his niece and nephew are being threatened by people who want him to throw a trial. The Marshall service there to protect them have a history with this judge. But the interaction between the characters is great!
I started this book today, and have now missed out on several hours of sleep, but I knew if I put it down I would have lain awake speculating what was going to happen next. A compelling and fast-moving story of love sneaking up on you in the least expected times, courage to do what is right and faith to sustain you through inexplicable trials.
Forgot I tried to read this book and gave up on it the first time. Same thing this time. Every paragraph see wrote that she was ashamed she was falling for some one she was attracted to. Every act brought that about. I had to give it up. Nobody thinks that much about how attracted they are. If I could give it a zero I would.
Protective custody is a great read. It starts with introducing the characters and is filled with suspense. I just couldn't put the book down. This is a must read. What get me as well is the bible quote, knowing the at this time we are struggling with our faith and forgetting that there is peace in the storm.
I liked the suspense but it could've been lighter on the love thing. Knowing this was one of the few first books Eason wrote, I ignored my thoughts and look forward to reading her next book.
This is a fast paced suspense book. You never know who the bad guy is or are they closer than you think. This book will have you turning the pages to find out what happens.
This is the first book I have read by Lynette Eason. I was very pleased with the pace of the action. It was a quality Christian book and I plan to get more of her books
Protective Custody by Lynette Eason is packed full of action from beginning to end. The bad guys and outcome were pretty predictable. However, it was a good read. If you like suspenceful tales, this is recommended.
A book that held my attention with suspense, doubt and a flirting romance. Eason has written another good book for her readers. It has a great lesson on trusting God in the hard times as well as good!
This was a typical light thriller where a judge's family is in jeopardy if he doesn't recuse himself from a trial. Unsurprisingly, sparks flare between the agent assigned to keep him safe. Though highly predictable, this was an enjoyable audio book.
Miss Eason does it again. Love her books especially she adds the bible verses and the characters are so real when they pray to our Lord Jesus pouring out their heart ply unto him. Thanks an God bless miss Easton keep up work.
It was a great book... but there was one major problem with it that took a star from it for me. Straight from the beginning I knew who was bad, so it kinda took the mystery, suspense, and questioning out of it for me.
I think this is the first Lynette Eason book I’ve struggled to enjoy. It was so fast and the characters fell in love right away with little backstory. It just didn’t ring as true as her other romances and the suspense fell flat for me.
Fast paced, page turning story. Loved the characters. The children were a good addition to the story. The spiritual grow of Carly and the strong faith of Nick were great and inspiring.
This book is so good! The characters are wonderful as they fight for the right outcome. The suspense is non-stop with twists. I love the way God and the Christian life are portrayed. Great!
