What an up-and-down series this is proving to be !! Books 1 & 3 I gave 5*, books 2 & 4 only 2* and I packed book 2 in before the end, too. I almost did the same with this one as well as in places it became a real slog and I just wasn't enjoying it very much at all. A lot of it was all over the place or not written in the order of events occurring, making it none too cohesive and quite the chore to wade through, I felt. Near the start, Daniel heads round to the first victim's home to trawl through it and says this in conclusion, "The woman had lived in terror." Well, I have no idea why he thought this in the least ! Then an ex-but-one of this victim had to take time off work for a few days after learning of her murder, which seemed a tad extreme when they'd been separated for more than a year. This passage left me confused, "We're aware of several parts of the harbor project, though the value of the land where you found her isn't important to us. We'll get back to that later, but first tell us how you found her".....my confusion being down to the mention of land value, which nobody had referred to in the first place, so why mention it ?? Then this paragraph, "You're going back to your cell, and you're going to do whatever it takes to remember what was on that card, or whatever it was." Again, it's a nonsense line as he had stated it was a business card already, so there was no need for the last few words. It's like the translator suddenly got bored and just started writing stuff down 'literally' without putting any thought into it. Yet it's the same translator as usual so I'm not sure why he's started writing in this fashion. Towards the end, the plot got more than a little farfetched and if an occurrence then had appeared earlier on in the story, I'd have given up on it as it just wasn't believable to me. This line was another that came across as nonsensical as well, "Lisa clutched her pants." Perhaps something was lost in translation there. I also noticed throughout, that whenever a colour needed to be referenced, the author went with green....whether it was a car or a sweater or a jewellery gem !! A dead body full of tattoos was apparently going to be "tough to identify" whereas I'd have thought it pretty easy, an was used and not a a couple of times, odd words were dropped from sentences, speechmarks missed here and there along with fullstops. Then she did something that for me ALWAYS costs a book 1*-she spelt one of her character's names wrong !! So we had Sampson and then all of a sudden Samson.....I really think a lot of these mistakes shouldn't have managed to make it through to the finished article. Then this book actually ends on the Kindle at 84% and then we get a preview of another one by her. SEVEN chapters of it !! I'll try the 5th book when it is available and that will be the decider for me as to whether I stick with this series or not.
this is the third edition of the Daniel Trokic series. The brutalized body of a young woman is found posed in a park. Danish Detective Trokic and his team are faced with the daunting task of determining whether the death was homicide or suicide. complicating matters is the fact that the deceased is the cousin of a member of the force. Subseuqnetly an animal rights activist is run down and a columbian drug dealer is dispatched. connections soon emerge between the seemingly unrelated cases and ugly secrets from the past are revealed. Trokic also receives news about his missing cousin that is both promising and troubling.
although I like this series I found this story to be a bit dull. The victims, their families and friends are uniformly unlikable and there are way too many characters. The missing cousin resolution was neither believable nor satisfactory. It starts slow but picks up at the end. Not a bad book but not the best in the series.
This is mystery novel is the third in a series by a Danish writer with world-wide sales. The protagonist is Daniel Kroick, a police detective in Aarhus, Denmark’s second largest city. The body of a young woman is found in the open, in a public park. It is apparent her battered body has fallen from a high structure and the corpse moved to this level location. While her recent activities point to a suicide, the body’s location hints otherwise. When an animal right’s activist is purposely run down, the police begin searching for a connection between the two crimes. They ultimately discover a childhood link, but I felt it took them far too much time to do so.
It was apparent I should have read the earlier installments of this series as the author digresses from the main story while Kroick searches for a cousin missing his native Croatia. This character was apparently important in earlier stories. This wasn’t a fast read for me as the foreign names and location were unfamiliar. While I was confused by a large cast of characters, the plot moves along nicely and it is a well plotted and ultimately and enjoyable mystery. Suffice to say I found it a pleasant enough read that I plan to drop back and read the first book.
Inger Wolf has created another dark, atmospheric, Danish, twisty murder mystery and police procedural. The characters are realistic, flawed, but constantly struggling to do their best, with unexpected revelations, and an ending I didn't see coming. It was another one of those books that grabs hold of you and doesn't want to let go. One where I found myself staying up much later than I should have been, saying, "Just one more chapter." I highly recommend any of the books in this series. They don't have to be read in order to enjoy them, but the developing relationships and back story for a couple of the characters will be more enjoyable if you do. I received a review copy from the author via BookSirens, and this review reflects my honest and voluntary opinion.
The Daniel Trokic novels have become my favorites and Inger Wolf my favorite writer! This series has everything and each book will keep you on the edge of your seat from first page to last. This novel, Songbird is my favorite because we also learn more about Trokic’s cousin Sinka and her disappearance after she left Croatia. The plot as always is fantastic and I’ve come to care about all the main characters in this books. I hope Inger will Co to us to write the Daniel Trokic series and that it continues to be translated from Danish to English because they are just that good. Read one and you won’t be disappointed.
Police Inspector Daniel Trokic and all the others at the police force are trying to figure out if Maja committed suicide or was pushed to her death--Then another woman is run over by a hit and run driver. Are these two cases connected? Who would want to murder these two women--and how did a very unusual drug get into Maja.
The police don't give up and keep pulling people in for questioning--to no avail. It has to be one of them--but which one--and what does this have to do with horses?
The ending is chilling as all is revealed--and one of the officers nearly loses her life!
Daniel and the team have to investigate if the death of a young woman was suicide or murder. Someone she knew who was an animal rights activist is also mown down and a dealer from Colombia is also killed. It is unclear how these are all connected and it is only really right at the end that things fall into place.
I found this not as intriguing as the prior two books. It just seemed to be missing some spark. It won't put me off though as the earlier books were quite enjoyable so I will definitely read the next one.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I am a huge fan of Inge r Wolf and I found this book to be thoroughly enjoyable. It is easy to see Inge r has done her researched has well thought out plots with many twists and turns. She will keep you guessing the entire book and I have to admit that I never figured out just who was the bad guy. Thanks Inger.
Loved the book....couldn't put it down! Usually, I can at least figure out "who did it" before the end of the book, but in this case I didn't! Inger Wolf is a great mystery writer!! Just wish more of her books were translated to English! " I just may have to learn Danish!!
The body of Maja Nielsen is found in a public park in central Aarhus in Denmark, with injuries consistent with a fall from a very tall structure. Meanwhile an animal activist is in hospital as a result of an hit and run. Daniel Trokic and his team investigate both crimes. I enjoyed this mystery story, another good tale in this series
Daniel and Lisa got put on the case for a girl was murdered in the most terrible way. The plot has many twist and turns in it and made for a really good read. There are trigger warnings for this book such as sexual situations, murder, and death. I really enjoyed this book and recommended to all readers.
Very entertaining and interesting storyline about a mysterious death that could have been a suicide, but maybe murder. Characters are linked in some way that the police are determined to find.
I thoroughly enjoyed this well written mystery with Daniel Trokic, detective. MS Wolf weaves a fast moving "who done it". The reader keeps thinking about each suspect only to learn it was someone different. I highly recommend
Book 3 was as good as the first two! This is an excellent crime mystery series. The detective's personal story weaves it's thread through all of them and each book reveals more.
It is as if the author has read a guide to writing a good crime novel: You need the brooding, mysterious detective who lives alone with his demons (as in Jo Nesbø's brilliant novels), the slightly annoying, overweight superior (just ask Camilla Läckberg), the rebellious girl with the freaky hair who happens to be an expert on computers (why hello, Stieg Larsson!), a secret order with a creepy name and some even creepier rituals (my, if it isn't Dan Brown!) and even a scrupulous, muscular giant who is about to finish his "masterpiece" of a tattoo on his own body (Dan Brown again). Originality at its worst. As with the other books in the series, the last 100 pages are captivating, while the rest of the book is a bit of a drag. There are so many awkward attempts at being critical of society or deeply psychological, but each time it seems the author is trying to get it over with and out of the way, and it is nothing one hasn't heard before. Entertaining enough for the bus ride home, but how she ever won a prize I don't get.
