With more than 30 million books sold, the My Weird School series really gets kids reading! In the seventeenth book in the My Weird School series, Miss Suki is a famous children's book author—and she's coming to A.J.'s school! She lives in the rainforest and writes about endangered animals. But when her pet raptor gets loose in the classroom, it's the kids who are going to be endangered! Yikes! Perfect for reluctant readers and word lovers alike, Dan Gutman's hugely popular My Weird School series has something for everyone. Don't miss the hilarious adventures of A.J. and the gang.
The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."
Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.
How is this book so highly rated? It’s terrible! The kids are incredibly cruel - calling each other names like dumbhead - and extremely disrespectful to each other and to the adults. The gender stereotypes are disgusting and the way the boys talk to the girls is awful. It’s also a bit racist and sexist in the depiction of Miss Suki. Truly truly terrible book.
We started reading the books in the My Weird School series by Dan Gutman and Jim Paillot together during storytime, but our girls have been reading them independently, which is fine with me. The books are silly and somewhat redundant, but have a clever theme that is similar to the books in the Black Lagoon series by Mike Thaler.
This story features a children's author who comes to visit Ella Mentry School. It was actually a lot of fun. Our girls liked this story and I'm sure we'll be finishing this series in no time.
I am shocked that there's a whole series of these books (well, three series and counting, I think). If the rest are like this one, I give the two thumbs down. There are so many wonderful books out there! Why would a kid waste his or her time reading this? The plot was kind of a throwaway, a huge emphasis is placed on gender roles, the adults are buffoons, and the word "dumbhead" is used waaaay too much. Very disappointed.
Mitä tahansa puolestatoista neljään tähteen. Aikuista voi ruveta ryydyttämään vanhojen vitsien kierrätys, mutta muksuille on menoa ja meininkiä, mukavan harva ladonta, iso fontti, iso riviväli ja sopivasti satakunta sivua heko heko hauskaa kohellusta koulussa eli varsin bueno kohderyhmälle. Pientä sisäpiirihihittelyä torspoilevasta kirjavinkkari/kirjastonhoitajasta ja hölmöilevästä kirjailijasta.
This is the first of this series we have read and I am sold. So cute and fun. MB and I both loved it...we will be reading a lot more of these. AJ is a hoot and while there are some words like I hate math that I could do without it is really current and sounds just like what I hear at the school.
This is now the third book I have read in this series and I understand why the series is so popular at our library. There were several times where I laughed out loud.
The kids are cruel to each other and to the visitor. The adults have no control. The children's author appears to have no skills dealing with children. Finally the ending has the child revelling in the misfortune of others.
I understand it was supposed to be funny but a children's book should not be this cruel and vicious without even a happy ending where things are made right.
My daughter enjoyed some of the earlier books in the series but when she read this one her reaction was a lot like Emily's...

I did not like how the girls in this book were portrayed: only interested in make-up and how they looked. I did not like how the bird getting hurt and Miss Suki being upset was funny.
I gave this 2 stars instead of one only because my daughter thought it was really funny. If the rest of the books are similar, I will stay far away even though she enjoyed it.
There are some cute moments in this book returning to the well of how children ask questions that are never really questions, and then who doesn't find bird poop funny? Not the best in the series, but still another fine offering.
My daughter loves when I read her these books but I can't take it anymore!! Its the same jokes over and over. She can finish the punch line to most of the jokes because they've been recycled from the other books. But kids love repetition.
Miss Suki is a children's book author who brings a bird to school as a surprise for the kids. When the bird (the fearless falcon) sees his reflection in Emily's mirror, he attacks it and hurts Emily because he thinks his reflection is his enemy. Emily is ok. The bird dies.
In Miss Suki is Kooky! by Dan Gutman, the students read The Fearless Falcon by Suki Kabuki and then the author visits their school with a raven! I liked this book because it gives some interesting information about falcons and is humorous. (Karen's review)
I like these books because they are quick to read and take me back to my childhood. However, I didn't really care for this one. It seemed almost too mean spirited and didn't have a good enough plot to back it up.
The plot was the weakest of the series so far. I found it really to be mean spirited. I'm no longer enjoying sharing these with my kids because the meanness is spreading to the kids I'm reading with.

This is a decent early chapter book series. Each book has a bit of humor and a relatable setting and characters that make them easy for students to engage with.
The second and third graders at my school love these books. They like that they are funny and use words like "shut up", "dumbhead," and "butt" as well as the exaggerated humor, some of which they don't always get. What I like about these books are the many idioms contained within each. It might be fun to make a class book about all the idioms and their meanings contained within each book...and you can also use this time, if you so choose, to address why using the words "shut up," "dumbhead," and "butt" in school are frowned upon.
