Envisioning BYU is a collection of dozens of speeches and other statements that shed revelatory light on the divine role of Brigham Young University. Among these is President Spencer W. Kimball’s landmark address outlining his prophetic vision of BYU’s second century, delivered on the occasion BYU’s centennial celebration, October 10, 1975. The collection includes many other seminal speeches by General Authorities, university presidents, and others, the university's foundational documents, and other statements. A note from BYU President Kevin J. Worthen says, "These perspectives on Brigham Young University are both inspired and inspiring. As we approach the midpoint of our second century, I invite you to read this collection and reflect on the unique light of Brigham Young University and your role in helping BYU reach its prophetically declared destiny."
As a BYU alumni and BYUtv employee, the missions of the university are only imperceptibly different from my own goals and purposes. There’s a lot in this book that defines what it really means to be committed to BYU, but I think this quote sums it up nicely.
“If the world needs messengers of peace and teachers of righteousness and builders of character and inspirers of faith in God, here is the university that can do all this—here at Brigham Young University. … All of you will be living all the commandments of the Lord…not because it is expected but because it is right.”
This first volume does a wonderful job putting together talks and other presentations that have been given regarding BYU (the school) place in educating students and how it can bless their lives along with those they come in contact. I really enjoyed the talks compiled and the history I learned about BYU.
