When anger and tenacity collide, sparks are inevitable

Devils on Horseback, Book 4

The Civil War took more than Lee Blackwood's arm. It took his confidence, his pride . . . and hope that any woman will see him as more than half a man. His friendships helped keep the demons at bay-until now. As each Devil has found happiness, Lee is left alone to cope with the darkness that claws at his soul.

Genevieve Blanchard has only one thing going for her: her no-good late husband's run-down farm. That, and a fancy name no one can spell might get her a cup full of dirt in Tanger. Room, board and seamstress skills aren't much, but it's all she can offer any man willing to help her bring in her wheat crop.

Reluctantly Lee takes on the job, the widow's smart-mouthed daughter and his growing attraction to a woman who stubbornly refuses to see him as anything less than whole. Slowly, his bitterness begins to fade under the light of their blooming love.

Warning: Y'all will fall in love with this stubborn cowboy, cheer for his strong woman, and get caught up in plenty of fightin', lots of makin' up, bone-meltin' sex and forever kinda romance.

This was my favorite of the series - both hero and heroine are damaged goods, facing tough odds to just live their lives. They don't believe in themselves much, or believe they're worth anything, but find in each other a teammate. Of all of the stories, the romance is probably the most believable. They feel more real to me, and their relationship more real. The sexual tension completely sizzles in this one. I also think this story achieves the best balance between the plot, the back stories, the violence and the romance, and Lee is such a hard, foul-mouthed s.o.b. you gotta love him.

Beautifully described emotions

Beth Williamson has a great talent for describing the devastating emotions felt by the 'Devils'. Her ability allows the reader to step inside their heads and really feel for themselves what they are going through just to stay sane. Five men, brothers, cousins & friend (Nate, Jake, Zeke, Lee and Gideon) who have come through the civil war between the states. Each has his own story. Book 4 is Lee's story. Internally their minds are in shreds. It is so heartfelt and poignant to see inside their internal struggle as they try to rebuild their lives.
Lee is the Devil with the most built up anger after his experiences as a confederate soldier. He lost his left arm and feels like half a man, someone no woman would look at twice. Fiercely independent, his anger with the world and everybody in it weighs him down and even his fellow Devils find it difficult at times to help him.
When he is asked to help Genevieve get her crop in on the farm, he is so disdainful about it, but agrees. He cannot believe that Genevieve actually sees past his disability and the false bravado, to the real person beneath and tries to keep his distance. She is light to his darkness, but the road to happiness is rocky as she struggles to convince him he is no less than any other.

3.5 stars, rounded up because I can't resist a dark & wounded hero. I love Westerns, particularly post-civil war, late 1800s set ones as an entire generation tried to rebuild itself. Beth Williamson's "Devils" series follows one such group of friends, all veterans, all scarred in various ways as they try to rebuild their lives. I got into this series on the recommendation of the awesome Sasha White, whose taste usually matches mine. I picked this one to purchase because I liked the idea of a one-armed hero trying to make it as a cowboy.

In hindsight, I regret not starting with book 1, because this is a tight knit group of friends and townsfolk, and I think I might have enjoyed it more starting the series in the right place. I'm planning to go back and read it in order! Lee is trying to recover from heartbreak after he asks the woman he's been lusting after to marry him and she says no, rejecting him for another man. His friends see him becoming more and more reclusive and suggest that he take on a part-time job helping Heroine, who is a widow with a young daughter, bring in her harvest.

Lots of sparks ensue, but the romance takes a very slow build. If you're a fan of Samhain romances, this is more mild of a heat level than some Samhain authors like Lorelei James or Deliah Devlin. The narrative dominates, with love scenes sprinkled for emotional impact. There's plenty of sexy here, though, but it's nicely married to the character arcs in a way reminicent of Linda Lael Miller (a tiny bit more explicit). I enjoyed the author's voice very much. I was in a mood where I wanted a faster pace, but there are plenty of times that the slow build and careful pace would be exactly what I want as a reader. If you're interested in spending a lot of time investing in the emotional well-being of the characters, this is the book for you.

There's a suspense subplot tied to heroine's backstory, and this wasn't my favorite part of the book. I would have rather kept the focus on her and Lee. Her backstory is very horrific, to a degree that I wasn't really prepared for. Willamson makes it work though, and I'm glad that she gets her HEA, but I had a very hard time shutting off the 21st century part of my brain. If you like your heroines just as dark as your heroes, you will ADORE this twist. All in all, this was an enjoyable read from an author I'd love to see more from.

Lee Blackwood has felt like a half a man since he’s lost an arm in the Civil War. His feelings of inadequacy increase when the woman he asked to marry him turned him down. As a result of the rejection that makes him feel like less than a man, he buries himself into his accounting work and his misery. When Genevieve Blanchard comes into town looking for help in bringing in her crop, the attraction between she and Lee ignites, but neither feel worthy of the other. When they’re pushed together not only does the passion ignite but they’re both forced to confront their worst demons. Will the love they share be enough when outside forces come in and try to destroy what they so carefully built?

Sorry, I suck at giving plot summaries. However, don’t let that stop you from getting LEE. It was a really go read. LEE actually reminded me of one of my all time favorite romance novels- LaVryle Spencer’s Morning Glory. Of course LEE has more erotic overtones; but I’m speaking of the fact of how two lost souls come together and find love and redemption in the other. You root for Lee and Genny and become invested into their relationship and believe in the happily ever after.

Despite that, I did have some minor problems with LEE. One was the scene where Lee spies on Genny. To me, that didn’t have a sexy feel, it had an “ewww you’re a stalker” feel. Lastly, I expected more conflict between Lee and Ginny during the big climax. Without giving anything away, a big revelation occurs near the end of the novel and it seemed odd to me that we didn’t get deeper insight from the character who was if not lied to, not told the entire truth. I needed to see more struggle from that person before he/she decided to move forward and trust the other again.

Besides that this was an enjoyable read. This is an author I’d definitely read again.

OK, so everything that I felt would have improved the books continued onto this one AND Lee was one PAIN IN MY ASS! I mean seriously people?!?!? Could he BE more whine about his arm?! You're alive. It was war. Move ON!
OK, that being said ... gotta love little Sophie ... she was quite the cutie pie with her sassy mouth! lol I really liked the Devils coming together to save the day in the end. Seems to be a recurring theme in the books but yet again, SOOOOOO much not left explained properly. I mean let's face it, the mother alone could have used a couple chapters .... Another book that should have been longer.
GAWD, Maybe Gideon's story will be more explanatory, but I doubt it LOL ... drives me CRAZY because the stories are really quite good, they just feel unfinished and choppy! ugh!!!!

I read the Devils on Horseback in preparation for book club. Western-historical-erotica is not typically my genre which affected the rating. Fans of the genre will enjoy these books. I thought they were well written with complex men and strong women. I thought the depiction of the post-civil war life of former confederate soldiers both compelling and heart breaking.

For some reason, I didn't connect as much with Lee's angst as I did with the other Devils. At least, not his childhood angst. Once the relationship was established between Genny and Lee, I was able to settle into the book and enjoy it more.

Really a 2.5 again. If it had ended around the 92nd page it would have been a 4 for me. But I knew something else was coming and there was more story, I just got tired of it. This book is shorter and the relationship happens even more quickly than earlier ones (or so I remember).
