"1930. Reich moves to Berlin. He founds the German Association for Proletarian Sexual Politics, whose aims include the abolition of laws against abortion and homosexuality and the dissemination of birth-control information." (6)
"1933 publishes The Mass Psychology of Fascism in Denmark. He is expelled from the German Communist Party, and a year later, from the IPA International Psychoanalytical Association" (page 6).
"By the 1950s Reich had persuaded himself that it was possible to isolate life energy in the form of vesicles, which he called bions, and to store it in accumulators known as orgone boxes." (11) See also, page 76.
Despite the mechanistic origins of a Freudian system, Reich is a vitalist in the sense of Henri Bergson (17). See also, page 80.
Surplus repression is the concept from a 1908 paper: "civilization demands more renunciation of its members than is necessary for its preservation." (20)
Marshalling the theory of instinctual renunciation, with sublimation, and the delay of satisfaction, Reich develops a character analysis (pages 22 and 24).
"civilized Western man was imprisoned in a character armor that prevented him from expressing his spontaneous feelings of love and hatred in general, and from experiencing orgasm in particular." (24)
Reich doubts what passes for "normal sex:" "Now, since, as Reich himself readily admitted, many psychoneurotics appeared or claimed to be living normal and satisfactory sex lives, his position compelled him to call into question the normality and authenticity of much that passes for normal sex." (26)
Under a repressive society, men are lacking, not merely mechanical prerequisites, but "the capacities for uninhibited surrender to the flow" (26) "Men to whom surrender means being "feminine" are always orgastically "disturbed."" (27)
"Reich's account of the ideal sexual act is remarkable both for its explicitness, which must have required courage in the pre-Kinsey, pre-Masters and Johnson era in which it was written" (28)
"In the mid-1920s both Freud and Reich, presumably for the same social and historical reasons, became impressed by man's tendency to behave destructively, but whereas Freud sought to explain this by postulating a death instinct, an innate drive toward destructiveness and self-destruction, Reich adopted the explanation that it was due to a much greater and more widespread repression of sexuality than Freud had ever envisaged." (31)
Sex economy of the patriarchal, authoritarian family 36-37 "a particular "authoritarian" mode of behavior on the part of parents tends to produce a particular submissive, inhibited kind of character in their children" (36)
"These antisexual pressures arise within a specific form of family, the "authoritarian family," which is held together not by parental love but by the oppressive and repressive use of power by the father." (37)
"Reich's idea that character armor, and hence neurosis, was the result of internalization of the repressive, antilibidinal values of the authoritarian family was not derived from clinical observation, nor indeed was it adduced to explain clinical phenomena. It was introduced for two quite different reasons: to reconcile psychoanalysis and Marxism, and to eliminate a discrepancy in Marxist theory." (42)
"[...] bourgeois society creates people with a character structure that renders them submissive toward authority and willing to be ruled [...]" (43)
"[...] it resolved the discrepancy in Marxist theory created by the fact, which was all too obvious during the rise of fascism, that the masses do not pursue the real economic interests of their own class but are instead only too willing to follow authoritarian leaders." (43)
