Nobody expected me to take risks, much less fall prey to the street culture my family so abhors--while Jell was a living enticement to take chances, to test the rules. They say after you break one rule, all others become suggestions. But how far does that go? I had to wonder, when the FBI asked me to betray the guy I've had a crush on since ninth grade.
So Jell and I have one less secret between us. Which would be better news if we weren't busy escaping a psychiatric clinic in the middle of the night, half naked, with people shooting at us. The only refuge we can agree to head for is my crazy cousin Gator's retirement village. Now we're lost. We're cold. And did I mention half-naked?
3.5 stars I really like this authors work, she has a distinctive style of writing that pulls me in every-time, although I must admit it can take a bit of getting used to. If you are patient enough to stick with it, its worth it. So no exception here, great irresistible characters in Jell and Ethan, who are reunited again under dubious circumstances. From here on in its a wild ride of intrigue and mayhem but along the way the attraction is crystal clear and believable. Jell and Ethan are so very different and their backgrounds make for a complicated life, the chemistry and friendship is just there and its wonderful. Loved the ending and how it wasn't boxed up into a pretty happy ever after, a tentative beginning and a convincing happy for now works here. One small complaint it was just a tad too short, would love a sequel.
Ethan's dreamed about Jell since they were adolescents, and now he might have a chance to live a few of those fantasies, but he's got a lot of other troubles at the moment.
A derailed career, his disappointed parents, who expected a heterosexual doctor for a son, not a gay man who has flunked out of med school. An enigmatic FBI agent Uncle who wants to use Ethan's friendship with Jell for his own purposes, to name a few.
Ethan is a sincere, passionate main character whom I instantly adored. It is easy to understand what he sees in Jell, who ends up being more than just a pretty face and a hot body. The action is fast and exciting and the sex was sizzling. A great read.
Lovely story. Two great protagonists, although, I admit it, Ethan was my favorite. Fabulous secondary characters, especially Uncle Ron and drunken cousin Gator. The sex scenes were both hot and sweet. There was humor in it too and HFN that just begs for a sequel. I loved it and I can't recommend it highly enough.
A total waste of time except for a couple of funny quotes about farting wounds and cocks tapping on bellies like polite but insistent bill collectors. I also got a glimpse of a leg hurting "abominably."
This one had some fun adventure and vivid characters. The writing was a bit confusing and the ending was more open than I like, as is typical of this writer.
Golden Boys by Amber Green is a novella filled with mystery, action, complex characters, and two men in love. The story follows Ethan and Jell. Ethan is a straight laced guy. He knows he’s gay, but his parents, highly religious, wish he would cure his condition. His uncle Ron, far more accepting, gives him a job that will reconnect him with Jell, his childhood crush.
Jell, now a famous rapper, has checked himself into a detox facility because he has information about a drug exchange and is trying to avoid (1) the dealers who want him dead and (2) the FBI who want the information.
When Ron sends Ethan into the facility as an undercover nurse to get Jell out, a series of events take place which bring the two together…and they get together. This story is a fun, quick read. Capturing you immediately, Amber Green introduces believable and complex characters, sharing their history as well as their feelings for one another. From the first pages, she draws you into the story and maintains a fast pace until the very end.
Whether on the run, barely clad in appropriate clothing, hiding out at Ethan’s crazy aunt and uncles home, or having hot sex, Ethan and Jell’s passion for one another is obvious. This is a read that would entertain you anywhere you go, but make sure you have the time to read it all the way through. Once you start, you won’t want to put it down until you finish.

This is such a unique premise, a med school drop out and a rapper. They come from such divergent back grounds but the same community. They are both struggling with who they are expected to be while trying to satisfy who they really are. I love the realism in that all their problems weren't magically solved by the end of this short novella. There is no HEA but the beginnings of trying to have a little happiness squeezed between the reality of their lives. This could be such a moving and riveting series.
I hope to see more of Jelly and Ethan and how they proceed with their future. I think that is the only reason I didn't give this 5 stars. I like it so much but it's so short and I would be so disappointed not to see MUCH more of this story. What can I say, I'm NOT a fan of shorter stories. I always feel cheated, especially the more I like the story. A less well written story, I'm usually relieved that it's over quicker. But this is so original, engaging and just so well written, that my disappointment with how quickly it was over actually detracted from my enjoyment.
Ms. Green, please write less well or longer stories!
I picked up Golden Boys during a free promotion on Amazon. I liked that it gave us an African-American perspective on homosexuality and coming out in a genre often dominated by white characters. I also liked that the characters were not shoehorned into a happy ending in a world that's not going to accept them so easily; the happy-for-now ending is pulled off perfectly and makes the story believable.
I would say that I would have liked to have seen more of Jell's world; his friends in the hip-hop business etc, to give a clearer picture of who Jell is when he's not around Ethan. Still, this is a great story and Green's writing is solid, giving a clear sense of place and good character development. I look forward to reading more of her work.
Enjoyed this read very much -- the contrast of the two golden boys, one who's made it as a rapper, one who's gone the academic route, who have a long path to go to find each other again, and there's no guarantee. Just hope, nearly extinguished in a hail of gunfire.
Amber Green has made a new fan -- I'll be looking for more of her stories.
This short novella was okay but nothing special. The attraction between both main characters felt real, but somehow their feelings didn't reach me. I couldn't really enjoy this plot, something was missing.
I really enjoyed reading about these two 'Golden Boys' who are both struggling with who they are expected to be while trying to satisfy who they really are. What I most liked was that the reality of their relationship wasn't a fairy tale happy ending but a down to earth solution.
This wasn't so much slashy as, you know, slash. Readable and the setting was interesting, but while I liked the viewpoint character, his romantic interest (Jell) didn't feel that fleshed out to me.
