I bought this when I was about 13, during my "teen romance" phase. Right away, I could tell that this wasn't typical teenage romance fare. Campus Fever is a series about a group of freshman girls at an exclusive private college called Hastings (set in the Boston area). Each book centers around a different girl and narrates her experiences.

Crash Course is about Cynthia, a tough girl from Detroit, and definitely the wrong side of the tracks. She is a scholarship student who is smart and used to being defensive with just about everybody, but especially rich kids at this college. She has a job working in the kitchen and experiences daily how the "haves" are different from the "have-nots". She acts like she has no patience with these spoiled rich kids...until she meets Jim.

I appreciated the candor with which this was written. Most teen novels of this type did not normalize teen drinking, sex and nasty dynamics between characters. It was like a soap opera in a teen novel!

That being said, it's not particularly well written. The character of Cynthia reminded me of Jo from Facts of Life (tough on the outside, but tender when you get to know her). I wouldn't mind having another copy, but it seems there are few to be had. It's a pure nostalgia trip. But this one was OK.
