Carmen and Juni are spending the summer at an OSS sleep-away camp. The camp director is a retired spy-turned-environmentalist named Oscar Zohn. But it turns out that O. Zohn thinks environmentalism means using nature for his own devices. He plans on using the unknowing help of the Spy Kid campers. Only Carmen and Juni are in the know…which means only they can save the world!
Throwback time, anyone? This book about the Spy Kids brought me back to my childhood. I remember watching the movies as they were released and thinking they were just the coolest!
This particular story takes place in the movies world of Spy Kids, in a summer camp for spies. Juni and Carmen discover the camp director's plan to take over the world, and have to thwart his scheming alone because he's got the other campers hypnotized.
Spanning about 150 pages this is definitely a read for a younger crowd, and I read it so I could get rid of it. Despite the younger demographic I enjoyed it, maybe because of the nostalgia but also because it's a pretty good plot. Props really star in this mission, and are critical for almost every step. Gadgets and everyday items save the Spy Kids more than any actual spying skills, but it's forgivable because it's cute.
Romance is at a minimum here, considering the characters are 10 and 12 years old, respectively, but because Carmen is such a strong character and has a bit of girl-drama between her cabin mates this is fitting for both genders.
Overall, a lovely quick read. I would recommend watching the films first to get a feel for the characters.
I loved these books as a kid. I am only missing one book from the series. These really are great adventurous books in my opinion for kids about the age of 10. It is got lots of action, not to mention just about the most coolest spy gear you have ever heard of.
