In 1999, the first edition of this book put Azerbaijan on the travel map. دليلك السياحي الممتاز إلى أذربيجان!... ولذا فإنه ليس كتاباً تقرأه وتستمتع بقراءته بل تتصفحه وتقرأ ما يعنيك عن البلد... ولكن قد يكون أفضل من سلسلة لونلي بلانيت الجافة نسبياً... يبدو أن الكاتب لم يترك شبراً في البلد إلا زاره وتفاعل معه، كتبه بلغة سهلة مباشرة وغير رسمية بل تشعر أنه يحاورك

ولكن ومثل أي دليل رحلات سيكون الكتاب ممتازاً لو كان القارئ هناك في البلد... الجميل فيه ذكره لتاريخ البلد ومناطقه وسرده للقصص المتعلقة بها... ولكن كانت الخرائط مرسومة باليد وغير واضحة، وكأن الكاتب يخشى من القراء الكارهين للخرائط، وهي نقطة ضعف كبيرة

ملاحظة جديرة بالاهتمام، المؤرخ العربي عبدالرشيد بن صالح (القرن 15) ذكر أن باكو مدينة جرداء ولا زرع فيها! والآن يمكن رؤية شيئاً من ذلك حولها... ولكن في 1870 قام الأخوة نوبل (أخوي ألفرد نوبل) باقتراح جلب تربة ونباتات إلى باكو بأن يتم ملء ناقلات النفط الفارغة العائدة بالتربة المطلوبة ونجحت الفكرة وقامت المدينة بفرض ضريبة على الناقلات العائدة الفارغة من التربة... فتأمل ذلك وأهميته وعظيم أثره
