Une biographie très intéressante, rendant Sissi et ses proches vivants à nouveau. Je connaissais plutôt bien son personnage mais je la connais désormais encore mieux.
Je referme le livre avec nostalgie car cela fait un mois que Sissi est présente chaque jour dans mon quotidien : mon voyage à Vienne et la visite de ses appartements, le visionnage de la série, le revisionnage des films avec Romy Schneider et cette lecture.

Sissi e un personaj, ca să îl numesc așa, care pe mine mă pasionează încă de când obișnuiam să mă uit la acel desen animat cu ea, atunci când eram copil. De fapt, ea reprezintă motivul principal pentru care am vrut să văd Schonbrunn-ul, pentru că în mintea mea mereu l-am asociat cu Sissi.
Așa că, în cele din urmă chiar sunt fericită că am citit cartea asta. Ea prezintă destul de în detaliu, atât cât a aflat autorul, viața lui Elisabeta, sau Sissi, așa cum i se spunea, începând încă din copilărie și până la asasinarea ei.
Chiar mi s-a părut interesantă viața împărătesei Austriei și tristă în anumite momente. De fapt, la final chiar mi-a părut rău de ea, și de Franz Joseph, pentru că în ciuda a cât de mult a iubit-o el pe ea și invers, deși tind să cred că el a iubit-o mult mai mult, nu pot să zic că viața lor a fost una foarte fericită, deși nici nu a fost tristă tot timpul. Cred că cel mai mult m-a uimit să aflu, pe parcursul lecturii, cât de mult a iubit-o Franz Joseph pe Sissi, în ciuda personalității ei uneori dificile, și a anumitor lucruri pe care le făcea, iubire care nu s-a schimbat pe parcursul vieții lor împreună. Mi s-a părut frumos de știut să astfel de iubiri există, chiar dacă ele sunt mai rare.
Și, deși știam cum se termină, adică știam că ea fusese asasinată, tot mi-au dat lacrimile la final, pentru că mi s-a părut chiar trist și nedrept într-un fel.
La început pentru mine cartea a fost ușor confuză, pentru că ea conține și destul de multă politică, pe lângă detaliile despre viața împărătesei, pe care eu nu o înțeleg și nu sunt convinsă că o voi face vreodată. Dar în timp ce citeam, am început să înțeleg suficient cât să pot urmări ceea ce se întâmpla și de ce, fără să mai fiu confuză, ceea ce pentru mine a fost suficient.
Singurul lucru care m-a deranjat la cartea asta au fost greșelile, care au fost destule și care nu ar fi trebuit să fie acolo. Cel mai des m-au deranjat cuvintele mâncate pe ici pe colo, ca și alte greșeli de tipar. În cele din urmă, asta nu a afectat cartea per ansamblu, dar deranjează, cel puțin mie asta mi-a lăsat o impresie nu foarte bună.
Dacă vă plac cărțile istorice, sau dacă vă interesează povestea împărătesei Austriei, eu v-o recomand pe aceasta.

ok ok i will admit it, i am fascinated/intrigued, and occasionally pissed off by this woman, her life and her times.
Sissi (or Sisi), Empress Elizabeth of Austria has long been a subject of endless fascination - mostly perhaps in Europe, given the 50´s movie trilogy with the talented Romy Schneider in the lead role.
i watched those movies at a very young age, and now looking back i think that is where my fascination with her and that particular time in European History originated - i admit it, it was also the dresses and the palaces and the jewels that got my attention ;) ...i suppose you can call it my definition of brain candy...to quote an expression of Lizzy´s.
In between my childhood, early teens and such, life and more books/movies got in the way, so frankly other than the occasional article i stumbled upon online, i never even considered researching her, just never got that curious i suppose.
That all changed one day, already studying at university, when visiting a bookstore (my idea of a shopping spree!) i ran into a book in spanish inspired by her...and the rest is history like they say.
I currently own just about every single non fiction book - in multiple languages- that was ever published about her, and am always looking for more.
Jean des Cars presents here one of the finest bios there are presently available about Elizabeth, her life and her times. JDC is perhaps better known to the french/european audiences, but any other genuine Sissi fan out there should most definitely get their hands on his books about the Hapsburg's, Elizabeth, European History and King Ludwig (yes the one who built the Bavarian Castles and was btw Sissi´s cousin).
Without ever loosing his respect for the times and, to a certain extent, the people he is writing about, JDC succeeds every single time in presenting a real, engaging and very compelling historical testimony to events in some cases quite recent (check out his book on Zita, the last Hapsburg Empress).
He presents the facts, gives an opinion or two of his own, but never tries to "sell" his ideas to the reader - he simply lets you make up your own mind, even at times throwing at you or two pieces of unknown info that gets you thinking and questioning previously held ideas that you took for unchangeable.
i totally admit, with pride, to being a major history geek/nerd/aficionado, and yes i have on occasion felt like insulting a "historian" or two for being so clearly partial when writing a book on any historical king, queen, general or president. For me the true historian is the one who, a bit like the watchers in the old highlander show, merely records and transmits what he "saw" without planting what many times are wrong and biased ideas in the readers mind - ideas that of course originate from his own personal opinion of his subject.
JDC is perhaps one of the most successful out there in this regard, maybe it helps that he is also a journalist so he knows how to make a story appealing to its public?
Regardless of it, i will always recommend his books - preferably in french, if not make sure you find a good translation and just read away my fellow history geek :) - it is worth your time.
When it comes to multiple biographies on the same historical character, its sometimes quite difficult to decide on a favorite when they all - the most popular ones anyways - have such good quality and content.
In the end i believe it all comes down to a personal preference for one particular style of writting, to how one author will resonate more with you.
Jean des Cars, french author/journalist, has long published books on historical figures in europe - The Romanovs, Empress Eugenie, King Ludwig and The Hapsburgs are among his topics, and each one of these makes for fascinating read i assure you.
In 1983 he published " Elisabeth D' Autriche, ou la fatalite" (first edition of this book i review) and it remains to this day one of the finest biographies of the Empress - along with Brigitte Hamann and Count Corti, i personally think these 3 are the "holy trinity" for anyone interested in her.
Jean des Cars has, to me, a particularly engaging manner of writing that makes history genuinely come alive for the reader, making one forget the world around us while he describes these events of so long ago - its less judgmental perhaps that Brigitte Hamanns work, hence my personal preference? Or simply he's a finer teller of tales, given his personal and professional background (son of a popular french writer and an artist), its a gift thats probably in his DNA!
Anyways, here like i said he presents the empress and her times, her life, her relationships with those around in a particularly vivid manner, especially her family ties and her devotion to her siblings - regardless of how these behaved towards her on some occasions....
An interesting addition to this book (its had several editions, a testament to its popularity) is also the theories about the tragedy at Mayerling and the "real causes" of the Crown Prince's death - truth or not these make for compelling reading and were apparently ideas that were discussed in the family and were known by Sisi's successor as The (last) Empress of Austria - Zita of Bourbon Parma.
I'm not sure if any of his books are published in english, if someone knows please share that information? But if you happen to be fluent enough in french to feel comfortable reading history - by all means get yourself a copy and i guarantee its more than worth the effort!
Side note - he also has published a lovely travel book which is a must for any die hard fan of Sisi - Sur Les Pas de Sissi - with many many pictures he shares his own european journey to her palaces, her cities and her home of Possenhofen (its from 1989 but so worth it!).

Jean des Cars est probablement l'un des meilleurs historiens du 21ème siècle .Sa manière de mêler les faits historiques avec le mystère ,les détails insolites , nous font voyager dans ce temps d'autrefois ."Sissi" n'est pas une simple biographie ,c'est aussi un véritable portrait psychologique d'un peuple entier.Sa personalité, ses secrets , ses chagrins , ses folles habitudes , sont racontés par des Cars , avec la plus grande sincérité, sans aucun détour de la vérite historique .Grâce à son image , fortement popularisée après la 2ème guerre mondiale, on a reussi de sauver la dignité d'Autriche.Habile,n'est pas?

Tout à fait impressionnant de découvrir l’impératrice. Je ne connaissais que les films. Lors d'un voyage en Europe dont entre autre l'Autriche, j'ai visité le Château Schönbrunn. Cela m'a donné le goût de lire tout ce qui concerne cette monarchie. En lisant, je revoyais tous ces monuments et châteaux Je comprenais mieux toute l'historique. Je recommande ce livre. Avec tout ce bagage d'information, j'ai envie de revoir la Hongrie et l'Autriche. De plus, lorsque je visiterai les autres pays de ses périples, j'aurai une pensée pour cette charmante personne et non pour le personnage

Beautiful book! The thing that I liked most is the way the author manages to combine so many historical details in such an interesting storyline!
Yet, it remains a historical book, at times a little bit hard to follow because of the wide range of details offered!
Otherwise a magnificent book about the life of a magnificent personality!

În 1967, primul meu reportaj în afara granițelor Franței m-a purtat în Austria. Tema era filmarea noii versiuni a dramei de la Mayerling, desigur nu ultima versiune, căci există anumite reconstituiri istorice care par inepuizabile și mereu supuse revizuirii.
Principalul interes față de acest film nu consta în alegerea actorilor. Catherine Deneuve, încântătoare, și Omar Sharif, seducător, erau, din punct de vedere fizic, contrarul tinerei baroane Maria Vetsera și arhiducelui Rudolf de Habsburg. Tot așa, nici Ava Gardner nu putea să pretindă că îi seamănă împărătesei Elisabeta, în pofida marii sale frumuseți. Ca și alte milioane de admiratori, eram încă fermecat de Romy Schneider, proaspătă și zburdalnică atât cât trebuia. Pentru cinema, ea a fost unica Sissi. Numai ea a fost și a rămas Sissi, inclusiv în acel magistral Amurg al zeilor al marelui Visconti¹, unde a întruchipat-o pe împărăteasa îmbătrânită, alături de vărul său, extravagantul rege Ludovic al II-lea al Bavariei. Și, după ce acest mit a fost popularizat de cinematograf, televiziunea l-a amplificat, mai ales în Franța. Fiecare difuzare a acestui serial celebru obține, chiar și azi, maximum de audiență. În acest Mayerling regizat de către Terence Young – realizator al primelor filme din seria, chiar mai prolifică, a lui James Bond – doar actorul James Mason interpreta un uimitor Franz Joseph.
Filmul avea însă un mare merit: fusese pus în scenă, parțial, chiar în locurile unde se derulase întâmplarea. La rândul meu, și eu am parcurs, conștiincios, coridoarele palatului imperial Hofburg din Viena și saloanele lambrisate ale castelului Schönbrunn. Am visat pe balcoanele vechiului oraș imperial, capitala nostalgică a vechii Europe. Și am început să adun primele elemente ale unei anchete despre acest trecut. Cinci ani mai târziu, în timpul cercetărilor pentru prima mea carte,
dedicată lui Ludovic al II-lea al Bavariei, am „întâlnit-o” pentru mai multe luni pe împărăteasa Elisabeta, singura femeie care a știut cu adevărat să îl emoționeze pe regele damnat al Bavariei. Waouh, j’adore ! Il fait clairement partie de mon top livre audio à égalité avec la saga du « Siècle » de Ken Follett lu par Vincent Violette (le meilleur narrateur). C’est un vrai coup de cœur. Philippe Caulier est une autre voix que je retiens et une voix que je vais suivre de près. Sa voix a un ton plus grave que celle de Vincent Violette, néanmoins comme lui, il fait vivre le livre qu’il lit. Il marque des pauses pour souligner les moments importants et les informations essentielles. Son timbre se teinte d’ironie, d’engouement et de tristesse. Je crois avoir décelé chez lui de l’empathie pour Sissi, cette impératrice malgré elle. Le narrateur ne fait pas tout, n’est-ce pas ? Effectivement, c’est ce que je pense. Le narrateur peut porter le texte avec toute la bonne volonté du monde. Cependant, si le texte est nul, l’engouement retombe relativement vite.
Sans l’avoir lu, je peux vous dire que le texte est un petit bijou. Jean Des Cars nous propose une biographie romancée croustillante. J’avais envie d’en savoir plus, toujours plus. Mes sessions d’écoute se sont faites de plus en plus longues. J’ai dévoré ce livre audio.

Ils ont choisi l’amour. Seulement, Sissi ne veut pas être impératrice. Elle accepte ce rôle par amour et parce que pour être avec son aimé, elle est obligée d’assumer cette charge.

Essendo appassionata di sissi non potevo perdermi questo volume appena l'ho visto. Una biografia splendida scorrevole, ben curata, mai banale e molto fedele a quello che era Sissi. Meravigliosi anche gli inediti che contiene frutto proprio del lavoro di ricerca e raccolta dati dell'autore che ha incontrato nipoti e parenti di persone che hanno sfiorato con la loro vita quella di Sissi. Penso leggero altri libri di quest'autore perché è stata una rivelazione meravigliosa. E spero ne tradurranno altri dei suoi legati agli Asburgo. Se la biografia della Hamann resta la migliore...questa si piazza nella mia top 3 tra i quasi venti libri che ho letto su questa meravigliosa anima tormentata che era Sissi! Consigliato per chi è affascinato da lei!

I have had a girl crush on Sissi ever since I was a child. I watched Romy Schneider bring her to life in the 1955 adaptation of the Empress' life and every single other TV series about her. But this book, like every other biopic, likes to sensationalise her life to no end. I've learnt lots of things I had no idea about from Sissi's life, but I hardly know how she felt.
Of course, I don't think that historians have lots of historical documents or statements from people to know much beyond that she felt trapped in her role as sovereign. However, this book felt more human in writing about her life than anything I've read about her.
If you're fascinated by Empress Elisabeth of Austria or you're a royalty fan, then you should read it.

O carte absolut minunată. Sissi a fost o femeie frumoasă și complexă cu dorință de a fi liberă. Viața ei a fost una tragică întrucât multe persoane iubite au părăsit-o. Cartea asta m-a emoționat mai mult decât orice altă poveste, deoarece este o poveste reala a unei împărătese critică în timpul ei și atât de iubită astăzi la Viena…A fost într-adevăr o femeie de neuitat…

The author is very loyal to Sissi's allegedly untainted image, and this loyalty is extended to her close ones. I don't know if she was more depressive than beautiful or the other way around. A well-designed collage of events around her life.

Conoscevo davvero poco la figura di Sissi, per lo più limitata all'immagine della serie che andava in onda circa 15/20 anni fa e sulla nuova che talvolta capita di vedere sulle emittenti per bambini. Sulla serie nuova devo dire, alla luce della lettura che in base alle nozioni trasmesse ed al livello più basilare è pertinente. Della serie vecchia ricordo poco, è forse più storica.
La lettura non è da romanzo perchè ovviamente è un testo serio e rigoroso,cui dedicare attenzione, ma non pesante. Differisce, secondo me e nella mia limitata esperienza, dai soliti saggi, poichè entra nel dettaglio, è storico, ma tiene in gran conto Sissi come persona ed in seguito come tutti i ruoli che è stata tenuta a ricoprire, anche il lettore si appassiona alla volubile sovrana incompresa.
Sissi ci viene presentata come una giovane donna stranamente cresciuta in libertà per gli ambienti in cui è nata (è difatti di famiglia di gran nobiltà) la cui unica colpa è ricambiare l'amore del giovane imperatore d'Austria-Ungheria Francesco Giuseppe. Il ruolo di moglie ed imperatrice è estremamente vincolante, duro, pieno di procedure protocollari(ce n'è per TUTTO!) e la suocera è assolutamente dura con lei, la farà soffocare dal primo giorno a corte. Non parliamo poi di quando ebbe figli.:l'inferno. E per doveri di stato il maritoè sempre lontano anche se innamorato.
La vita per la coppia è resa un campo minato a causa della madre dell'imperatore e Sissi vivrà sempre cercando di sfuggire da una gabbia, sviluppando nevrosi e problemi di altro tipo, quando vorrebbe solo semplicità e godere del focolare familiare.
Sissi è complessa e semplice assieme, volubile ed assennata, capricciosa ma non sontuosa. Insomma, non va bene per la corte! Sicuramente troppo moderna per i suoi tempi, ad esempio, con la sua fissazione per la ginnastica e per voler educare personalmente i suoi figli (tranne l'ultima, l'educazione degli altir non è stato quasi mai affare della madre se non in ritardo).
Altro dettaglio affascinante: a trentasei anni nonna! Certo, prestino, e certo, problemi di sostentamento non ne aveva, ma nell'epoca moderna a quell'età a malapena lo si fa un figlio! Mi ha acceso d' interesse per un periodo storico da me poco amato.

Rich biography of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth or Sissi, from her childhood until her assassination. It was very interesting to learn and discover about her personality: courageous, direct, impatient, very independent and at times difficult for the others, including the Emperor Franz Joseph. Nevertheless, they had a strong love bond which helped them navigate difficulties both in their and family life and politics. The latter is also present in the book, the context is very important for Sissi’s life also because she played an important role in the empire. I was glad to read this before my trip to Vienna, where her face is everywhere and there are so many historical landmarks connected to her and this royal family. Totally recommend coupling the two: the book and the trip!

Informațiile prezentate in carte sunt foarte revelatoare si ne arata, cat de mult se poate, viata împărătesei si relațiile sale cu cei din jur, pe lângă realizările sale.
Dar, cartea este destul de dificil de citit si de digerat, cel putin la inceput (sau pana de obișnuiești cu stilul autorului). Personal, imi pare ca trece prea repede de la o idee la alta făcând legătura între ele prea tarziu, sau poate niciodata.

Enthralling biography of the enchanting and elusive Empress. I have been fascinated with Sissi since I saw the movies by Romy Schneider. It was a rude awakening to realise her life was not the princess fairy tale the movie portrayed. Jean des Cars has a keen story-telling ability, transforming what could be dull facts into page-tuners.
