What a delightful escape I found in Ms. Riley's "Wanted Across Time". I have always been a fan of time travel romance since I read "Both Sides of Time" by Caroline B. Cooney in middle school - this took me back there, except it was slightly more charming, a lot more adult and there was a man on a horse vs. a grandiose socialite.
The set-up was a little awkward to me, and if I'm being honest it took me a while to get into. But that is the beauty of it all, Time travel doesn't exist in real life (or does it?) and Ms. Riley can take her creative license and whip up whatever method of getting us back to 1800 Texas any way she wants. I just wish there was a little more explanation at the conclusion of the book into the how of it all - I had a hard time accepting the let the spirits of the wind carry you. I found the transition between time a bit confusing and slightly cheesy.
Still, technicalities of time travel aside, the fire between Sam and Annie was so hot. I loved their spunk - each of them equally stubborn and smug. The adventure and the banter between the two as Sam tries to round up Annie and take her to her sentence is down right sexy. Once feelings get in the way of duty, I was all in. I was invested and wanted to know how this would all work; would same and Annie live a life on the run, would Sam go back to present day with Annie, would Annie stay with Sam, hell, would the whole story go South and Sam turn in Annie. All questions you'd have to read to get the answer to.
I found the premise of the book to be unique and the writing to be solid. Along with awesome character development, I could push this books flaws aside and give it a solid 4 stars. When I am in the mood for time travel romance I will for sure find my way back to Ms. Riley.
