John Owen was a great Puritan preacher who lived in England. In this book, Simonetta Carr informs readers about Owen s life, revealing some of the things that interested him while in school, the care he showed to people when he became a pastor, and the influential books that he wrote. Readers will also come to understand the difficult times in which Owen lived, and how he handled the terrors of war and religious persecution. Full of illustrations and fascinating information, this is an ideal way for young readers to learn history

This single sitting overview of Puritan, John Owen is another excellent installment in Carr's series, "Christian Biographies for Young Readers." Don't let the title of the series fool you, these books are worthy to be enjoyed by all ages.
What I like about the series, beyond the straight-forward writing, well thought out plot lines and exceptional illustrations, is that Carr roots each of her subjects firmly in their time. While my adjectives for describing her work are becoming repetitious, the stories are as unique as the individuals and the time periods in which they live.
Owen's life contains themes of religious persecution and uncertain times, cast against the necessity of doctrinal clarity and faithful service. Owens was a scholar and his story highlights the important contributions of intellectuals to the church. In today's culture, I find it notable that Owens didn't neglect pastoral responsibilities, but continued to faithfully shepherded his flock. This man sought out neither the exclusivity of personal recognition, nor the ease of exemption from the messiness of ministry. He wrote and continued to minister - at great personal risk.
Well done, John Owen for living a life that is an inspiration to us all. And well done, Simonetta Carr for another remarkable addition to her exceptional series "Christian Biographies for Young Readers."

This is the first biography we've read in the series by Simonetta Carr, and we are so very pleased. Carr's storytelling is engaging, capturing the attention of both children and adults alike. The illustrations are lovely, and the timeline and "Did You Know?" section finish the book off beautifully. Highly recommended.
As part of her series, “Christian Biographies for Young Readers,” Simonetta Carr does an excellent job describing the life of John Owen, who lived in England during the 1600’s and was a Puritan, as was his good friend John Bunyan who wrote “Pilgrim’s Progress.” Owen wrote many books, including a “catechism” for children, which is a book that lists the truths about our faith, that can be memorized. He wrote books to help people understand Biblical truths, and he was instrumental in getting “Pilgrim’s Progress” published.
This attractive and informative book about one of the leading Puritan pastors of the 17th Century is a classic for young Christians. I gave it 5 stars in light of the fact that it is intended for young readers. This short biography is clear and has beautiful illustrations. If you are a new Christian of any age, and want to quickly study the great leaders of our faith, this synopsis of John Owen's life would be a valuable addition to your reading list.
A helpful overview of Owen's life. I'd say Carr did a good job with what she had to work with, but the details were the kind that don't lend themselves easily to a 'young reader's' biography - lots of politics and death. The ending was touching and made the whole story seem worth plowing through with my son. Definitely for older readers too.
A great resource, easy to understand, and share with younger readers about the life of John Owen. I was surprised by how much I didn't know about the life of John Owen. I loved that the catechism was also included in this family friendly read about great reformer heroes.
Great introduction to the 17th century, Puritan church leader John Owen. I did not know much about John Owen before this book and was surprised to find out he lived through the life and death of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, and Charles II--a very tumultuous time for England and for the true followers of Jesus Christ living in England.
The children also enjoyed the book and the younger children especially enjoyed the beautiful illustrations in the book. This book is a great read-a-loud book for children of all ages.
I didn't know much about John Owen before, honestly. This was a well-rounded biography that could have just focused on his theology, but captured many different facets of his life.
Again, excellent writing and artwork for drawing young readers in. Hardcover, 60 pages, short chapters, timeline at the end.
This is a children's biography of a leading English Puritan, John Owen. However, it makes an excellent introduction for any age. Like the other books in this series, it is illustrated and has a helpful timeline. I knew little about John Owen before but this has made me want to read more. I have enjoyed all the books that I have read in this series and recommend them for the library of any Christian family. The books aren't cheap but the quality of the production is excellent.
