The Treatment

Rate this book
On the run from a husband who keeps her locked up in their apartment, Anne finds refuge in Manhattan, where two film producers offer to buy her story - and end up buying her body and her mind.
Offering an astonishing glimpse into the rat-eat-rat world of New York City, The Treatment is both a ferocious satire of the showbiz ethic and also an unsettling investigation into the potentially brutal relationship between artist and subject.
Published alongside its premiere on the mainstage of the Royal Court Theatre, Martin Crimp's new play amply fulfills the promise of his earlier work.

Martin Andrew Crimp (born 14 February 1956 in Dartford, Kent) is a British playwright.

Crimp is sometimes described as a practitioner of the "in-yer-face" school of contemporary British drama, although he rejects the label. He is notable for the astringency of his dialogue, a tone of emotional detachment, a bleak view of human relationships – none of his characters experience love or joy – and latterly, a concern for theatrical form and language rather than an interest in narrative.

2.5 stars.
A play on the abuse that sometimes take place in the artistic world, still very relevant to this day. Sadly I think the plot eventually lost momentum and fell a little flat.
Although not unpleasant, I would think this play is better when seen than read.

This play seems to be falling into oblivion to never be staged again, read, or talked about. That's a real shame. I dunno, maybe it is cursed by being so timely for the 90's it seems dated now. I re-read it from time to time, though, and to me it is still savagely dark and bitingly funny at the same time. If you liked Howard Korder's The Lights, you should check this out.

My dream role: The blind taxi driver in NYC in this play. I’d do it in drag. A big moustache and two eye-patches.

“I’ll take you uptown. Do I have a green light?”

Funny !!!!!!!!
