In the sleepy town of Hillcrest, supernaturals need not hide in the shadows...
Savannah Danvers is concerned with one thing: keeping her life as a blood-sucking, human-killing vampire a secret. But as the memories of her latest kill cloud her mind, she finds herself on werewolf land during a full moon. After she stumbles upon a bloodbath, Savi must decide if she’s willing to risk her life to defend the treaty enacted centuries ago by the town’s Elders.
George Alcott’s insidious past has remained buried for far too long, but when tragedy strikes, he must tap into his birthright. As his dark magic consumes him, he risks everything to save a lost soul. Now, haunted by demons he thought no longer existed, George must enlist help from an unruly ally and former love.
With the town’s Elders close to discovering their monstrous secrets, Savi and George must cover up their crimes before they too are burned at the stake.
Ben Alderson is a #1 Amazon bestselling author. His stories are set in fantasy worlds filled with magic, adventure and MM romance. Ben lives in Oxfordshire and, when not writing, can be found reading, taking Winston - his Labrador - out for long walks, or obsessing over Marvel’s The Scarlet Witch.
I do not review my own books nor rate them. BUT... this book is only half mine. I really wanted to talk about Savi and how Danielle has written about her.
So, how are co-writing works is really interesting. We create a plot that we follow, chapter by chapter. BUT, Danielle is in control of her Savi chapters, just as I am for my George chapters. So, until I read them every morning I do not know how Danielle with tackle or write. AND LET ME TELL YOU... Savi is amazing. The way Danielle can write something so lyrical, describing the inner workings of a vampires mind is just fabulous.
Savi is tempered, dark, emotional and strong. A true warrior. Someone who is going through alot in this first book... and even more in the following.
Danielle took the vampire trope and spin it on its head. She inspired me EVERY DAY whilst she wrote. I feel like I have learnt a lot from her as an author. But truly, you all know how much I love paranormal. Writing one with such a good friend has been an amazing experience... one that has resulted in us writing a huge series for you all.
I watch the sun wish the moon goodbye as the day breaks. The shadows enveloping my world dissipate as the light kisses my skin. I struggle to welcome it. Being born and not bitten grants me many pleasantries, like being a day-walker and using compulsion. Even though I know I'm blessed, I embrace the dark. Vampires were made to stalk as night-walkers. I can't deny the way the moon speaks to me.
this was a pretty solid read. i absolutely loved savi and george. they make a huge mess of things but still, they deserve better. my favorite thing for sure was the loyalty between the trio aka george, savi and savi's brother, chad. the magic in this was interesting and the way the supernatural creatures were written was unique. the one complaint i have is that i felt this story was rushed a little bit. i feel it could have been a bit longer and the plot dragged out a little more. it kind of, in a way, felt like a novella. however, i very much enjoyed this story and cannot wait for the second installment!
I have mixed feelings about Crimson bite because although I loved the concept and certain aspects of the characters, I struggled to warm up to either of the main characters and the plot was a bit thin.
Savi is a born vampire and goes against the rules and kills humans whilst feeding, something that she seems to be struggling with, however, I have not felt her truly battling with her demons. Her attitude was vastly arrogant and superior and feels bad only when she is faced with the consequences of her actions. I did warm up to her towards the end a little, but I found her overall to uncaring towards others, including her best friend and even her brother. George was far more likeable, trying to cope with the unspeakable acts his mother is making him do in the name of “justice”. I would’ve liked him even more if he would’ve stood up to his mother a lot more from the beginning – I struggled to get behind him whilst he was doing all of these. I really liked the scenes between him and Chad, their relationship was my favourite bit.
The writing was good, although I was worried initially that I would “tell” who wrote what, but it flown seamlessly and blended together really well.
Although I have liked reading Crimson Bite, I did not feel that there was much going on in terms of plot movement and there were some pacing problems, especially to begin with. This might also be because I have certain expectations from urban/paranormal and not all have been met. All being said, I did enjoy the story!
The story ends on a cliffhanger, but the next instalment is out on the 8th of January 2019.
Hillcrest brings together many supernatural beings, Savi was born a vampire, she comes from one of the most powerful families in the city, she now lives alone with her brother Chad. Vampires must not drink human blood, nor kill humans for that matter, but Savi has a slight problem on this side, she has always covered her tracks well, until now.
Her best friend is Georges, a very powerful wizard, he lost his father and must now obey his mother, who asks him for things he doesn’t like to do. Whether it’s Savi or Georges, they both have secrets from each other.
And now let’s talk about werewolves, they live in the forest and since the pact, the supernatural no longer fight each other. Everyone knows not to go into this forest, but Savi and Georges are slightly stubborn and they take risks. It will cost them dearly and their secrets will soon be revealed.
I like Georges, he’s nice but he has a dark side that he tries to hide as best he can. I liked a little less a certain moment in the book when he blames Savi for something he did himself. I want to see his relationship with Chad evolve despite the barriers between their two races, because they are both adorable.
Savi took a little longer to get loved, at first I found her a little unpleasant, her brother, protects her he is always there for her and I have the impression that she is not grateful or at least a little loving. She is also not very friendly with humans and it must also be said that she has a certain self-esteem. They thought her secrets were well kept, but she will unintentionally reveal them herself.
I loved the story, there is action, a beginning of romance and an important friendship, this first volume sets up the series and frankly I look forward to reading the rest. As Ben and Danielle are nice, the volumes are closer so the wait will be easy.
In any case, the end intrigued me and I look forward to the second volume. Danielle and Ben have managed to put in place a rich history and I hope that it will still meet my expectations.
Quick Word: Crimson Bite is an exciting story, full of friendship and mysteries.
I want to thank the authors, Ben and Danielle for sending me a free copy in exchange for a honest review and also for creating such an amazing story.
To this day I am still trash for Twilight and anything vampire/supernatural related so I was very exited for this book and let me tell you it did not disappoint!!
Saving and George felt so real, the fact that they were written by different authors really brought them to life. I loved that they're both facing their own personal demons as well as all the other problems that come up.
The world and the plot were amazingly done, page after page I always found myself wanting more (i still do). All the twists and turns and the romance... Oh the romance... Also I adored how important the friendship is, I feel like we don't get that a lot in books anymore, it was very refreshing.
I can't wait to see where the series will go in the next instalments, i haven't been this exited for a while!!
Sometimes I worry about reading books with two authors because you’re not sure how it’ll flow. But I must say these two authors did a great job making the story flow it seems like it’s only one. Savi is a born vampire and her best friend is George a witch from a strong bloodline. Both hide secrets from one another but the truth may come out. Savi hides her kill to where it could look like a death caused by the wolves. But when the two go to a bone fire with humans, everything starts to go downhill. This story has a cliff hanger and some surprises at the end. Anxious to read the next book in this new series to see what’ll happen next.
This is a story about two supernatural best-friends: Savi, a vampire, and George, a witch. Both are keeping dark secrets from each other and from the town they live in. Secrets that could lead the town's council to decreed their deaths.
Savi is a born vampire, whose only remaining family is her brother Chad. Despite the town's treaty, Savi can't fight against her predator instincts, feeding on and killing humans. She must keep this secret at all cost from the town's Elders, but specially from George.
George is a powerful witch with skeletons in the closet: struggling under the murderous demands of his mentally unbalanced mother, his inability to conquer a certain element, and a secret former love acting like he never cared for him.
These two find themselves at the wrong place, where everything gets out of control too fast. It's not just their lives that are at risk, it's the possibility of loosing themselves to the darkness.
The story is interesting, but I didn't feel much of a connection to the characters. Savi is someone who doesn't even attempt to fight off her craving for more than blood bags, and kills her victims. George has an insane mother who makes him do terrible illegal things, like that justice into their own hands. I can't cheer for their success, when they do so much wrong.
They also never manage to fix anything. Every time they try, everything gets worse and they don't fix the previous problem. Mistakes and more darkness ensue.
The plot needed to be more cohesive, specially with the switching points-of-view. Hillcrest needed more context. There's so much we don't know about this supernatural world. A lot happens in a small amount of time, it will make your head spin haha
Title: Crimson Bite (Hillcrest Supernaturals #1) Author(s): Danielle Rose & Ben Alderson Pub. Date: December 25, 2018 Rating: 4/5
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This will be a spoiler free review.
I’ve been a reading slump since finishing Kingdom of Ash and nothing had been holding my attention for more than a few chapters. This book was just what I needed to get back into reading. I really enjoyed it overall. The writing was great, the characters where interesting and I liked how we were basically plopped into the middle of this world, these lives and continued on.
This was the book I didn’t know I needed to read. I guess I’d been wanting something supernatural, vampire filled, and this book didn’t disappoint. For me this was a pretty quick read – finished it in about four or five hours over the course of three days.
About the characters – we meet a lot of key players, George, Savi, Chad, George’s mom. I liked George and Savi’s friendship and felt that they balanced each other out pretty well. I’m not a huge fan of George’s mom, but I think her character was written well, because I really don’t like her and I’m having actually angry feelings about her. As for Chad, he played a bigger role in the latter half, and so far, I like him, and I like that he’ll do anything to protect his sister. I hope he gets a bigger role in book 2.
I’m not sure I’d ever want to go to Hillcrest, but the writing made it very easily to visualize the town and layout. Besides the vampires, witches and werewolves running about, it kind of reminded me of a Stars Hollow or Bluebell.
It wasn’t just the town that was easy to visualize, but everything in this book was a clear image in my mind. Sometimes when you get a book that’s been co-authored, the writing doesn’t flow right, and you can tell that two people have written it. I didn’t feel that with this book. I think Danielle Rose and Ben Alderson melded their writing styles together pretty seamlessly and because of that I was able to fully focus on the story.
My only reservation about the book is that it felt a little like the show True Blood. Now, I’m currently watching the show, so maybe it’s just me. It probably is. I don’t think this is a bad thing, and there weren’t blaring similarities, and to be honest, what I know about vampires comes from the books I read and shows I watch – I’ve done no history on lore or anything. But even with a few similarities, I don’t really think it’s a bad thing, it’s familiar and if anything made it so much easier to create a picture in my head.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and I am definitely interested in what happens in the next one, especially after that ending. Thank goodness for rapid release!
If you’re looking for a quick, enjoyable supernatural read, then you should definitely check out Crimson Bite when it comes out December 25!
I'm once again having a hard time reviewing a young adult book because this genre just simply isn't for me and writing about this seems a little hard because I don't want my opinion of this genre to effect the review itself.
Crimson Bite is a story about two supernatural creatures, George who is a witch, and the vampire Savannah. These two have been great friends for a long time but what happens to them when everything starts to slowly go downhill?
I liked how the story was written in two perspectives which gave the story more volume. First, I was definitely sceptical about the book being written by two authors but this time you could hardly even tell when the author switched because I think that the author switched when the character switched too which gave the story a nice touch.
I generally found this book to be a fun and quick read. I have seen people giving criticism to this book because both characters clearly break many rules and are not the most law-abiding persons but I found that to actually be a good thing. It's nice to read something a little unusual every nowhere and then. If course it is hard to sympathize for these specific characters but it is just a small flaw and it most definitely did not ruin the book for me.
Overall, I think this is one of the best young adult books that I have read (which is not a lot tho but anyways) and I look forward to the release of the second book!
This was an incredible beginning for a book series. The characters were fun and enjoyable, the plot was brilliant, and the setting and dialogue was vivid.
Pros: - The relationships between Savi, Chad, and George were so interesting and so puzzle-like, they felt new, yet familiar. - The fight scenes were stunning. It was fluid, fresh, and captivating. Normally, fight scenes are repetitive and drag on, but these fights kept me on edge and excited. - The antagonist. The way they created the enemy was beyond anything I had ever read. They were clever, strategic, and power-hungry, yet also they were sympathetic and alone. - The characters perspectives were fun to follow and it was easy to get to know them.
Cons: - It was bloody. I honestly don't mind reading about the blood, but I definitely can understand how some might be uncomfortable with the large amounts of it. - Everyone had a secret so dark that I couldn't relate to them. It was hard to put myself in this shoes when it came to their problems. But, the person I felt like I could understand and relate to most was Chad. - The curse words just magically appear. For a good part of the book there was no cursing, but closer to the end was when the came out.
With all that being said, I highly enjoyed this book. I am incredibly excited for the rest of the series and I would definitely recommend this book!
Today's topic is author collaborations. There have been a few stellar pairings IMO (Stephen King/Peter Straub - The Talisman, Lee Child/Douglas Preston - Pendergast series, King/Richard Chizmar - Gwendy's Button Box), and a few failures (James Patterson/author of the week). With this novel, I've discovered another wonderful pair of authors who worked seamlessly together. . Danielle Rose is a true triple threat. In addition to her incredible supernatural and romance novels, she also penned a fantastic little horror short story (She) that had me yearning for much more horror from her. Ben Alderson is the founder of Oftomes Publishing, a small publishing house that primarily focuses on the supernatural genre. I've read about 30 novels from various Oftomes authors, and loved them all. . With this novel, a supernatural tale involving witches, vampires and werewolves, Rose and Alderson merged their writing in such a way that the reader will never become confused. The tale's point of view bounces between Savi, a female vampire, and George, her best friend who is a witch. The tale is finely crafted, and has a story that is fun and easy to follow. This is only the first book in the series, but it will not be the last I read. . My Rating: 4.75/5 stars
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
The cover for this book instantly caught my attention. I loved the colour of the red and the moon behind the model on the front. From the blurb we know that Hillcrest is going to bring together a lot of supernatural beings.
Our two main characters are as described in the blurb. Savi, born a vampire who tries to hide her bloodlust and her best friend is George, a very powerful wizard who has lost his father. Then you have the werewolves who live in the forest.
In the beginning, we learn about a treaty that was made years ago, then we learn about how Savi has been breaking that treaty. I loved both of the main characters in different ways, as they both have something dark to battle, both inside themselves and in the world.
There’s action, romance, and a very big theme about how important friendships are. Plus that ending literally has me needing the next instalment and I am so excited as, with the current date, it comes out the day before my birthday!
Crimson Bite, book one in the Hillcrest Supernaturals Series, follows Vampire Savannah Danvers (Savi) and her best friend, and Witch, George Alcott. When Savi feeds on an innocent human, she risks not only her life, but the treaty between the supernatural groups. When she feeds, she retains the girl’s memories, which cause her to be reckless which in turn endangers her and her friend with the group of werewolves living in the nearby forbidden woods. When tragedy strikes, George risks everything to help those in need, opening the door to a dark magic within. Now the town’s Elders are starting to search for clues, clues that will eventually point in their direction. Will Savi and George be able to fix what they’ve done before the truth is discovered? Or will their actions change their lives forever? I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
I have never thought I would enjoy a werewolf and vampire story so much again. I not a big massive 'Twilight' fan, but I love Cassandra Clare's books. This story has definitely brought me back the love for the supernatural. Having a wizard as one of the main narrators and characters has stolen my heart from the beginning! I love magicians and anything to do with magic, especially if there's something dark hidden in it! Savi and George are such powerful and strong characters, they do make some stupid decisions that they regret at the end but their friendship makes them fight for what they believe and it is so captivating I just want to adopt them both! I cannot forget Chad, Chad and his ex-boyfriend OMG!!!!! Don't wanna say any spoilers but this might be one of my new favourite LGBT couple in literature! so much tension between the characters I love it! I am really glad Danielle and Ben decided to write this story together, Danielle giving voice to Savi and Ben writing George's point of view. It gives the reader the opportunity to enjoy two styles of writing and I also believe that it gives the characters more diversity.
OMG!!!! This is a wonderful start to a wonderful brand new series. I am so hooked on reading this new series. Once I picked up this story and started reading it I could not put it down till I was done with it. It captured my attention from the very begining all the way threw to the end. I can not wait to read the next story I lvoed it and I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading paranormal stories, if you but this story you WILL NOT be disappointed at all.
It was truly one of the best supernatural books that I have read. The story had my attention from the minute I started. I liked how the characters of the story have grown throughout the whole story. I liked the way every chapter came together. This is going to be one great series. Thank you for sending me an early copy.
I loved having different perspectives to read from. It made the characters feel more real and they were built very well. Each character felt well developed. I really enjoyed this! But then I love books with Vampires, witches, werewolves and so on, so it was just what I wanted. Kind of a little Vampire Diaries (the show) feeling here and there! defs recommend!
Wow!!! I loved this book. It is written by two authors, but flows so smooth it as if one person is writing it. One of the best vampire/werewolf/witches novels I have read! I am looking forward to continue reading this series! There is so so much hinted at, I can't wait to see how it unfolds!!!!
Davi and George are best friends. She’s a vampire and he’s a witch. She feeds on a human which is wrong and retains the girls memories. She acts recklessly afterwards. George tries to help but dark forces can happen. What happens when the elders look into what’s happening and it points to them? I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
I enjoyed reading this book and will keep reading the series. It seemed as if everyone had a secret, and not just sneaking cookies, and that carries this story. But, it is not just the secrets, the relationships between the characters was deep and definitely kept me reading.
Savi is a secret vampire that lives with her brother Chad. An amazing first book in a series that will definitely be fantastic. Different type of Vampire story to keep you intrigued.
Thank you to Ben and Danielle for sending me an arc of this book in exchange for a truthful review.
Crimson Bite is an instant top three of 2018 for me, which I was not expecting. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve read books by both authors, and loved them, so I thought I would enjoy the book. But, I did not realise how much I would adore it. Usually, however, novels about vampires or witches don’t really interest me because a lot of them seem to be overly similar.
THIS BOOK, THOUGH! There were so many things I loved! I want to, first of all, make sure I get one thing out the way. I hated the mother in this book. Like, properly despised her. I don’t think I have ever reacted so strongly, so negatively to a character before in my life. She is just an awful, for lack of a better word, person. Vile. Vicious. Hate her. Whiny and annoying.
What I enjoyed the most out of this book was the friendship between Savi and George, how it works when you are incredibly close with someone, but scared they’ll judge you. How keeping secrets work. Everything about the friendship was so authentic. Although they are furious at each other for portions of this book, they still love each other and want to help, and put themselves in danger.
Sometimes I read books where the world building is lacking in every way. Crimson Bite was different, and you can tell Ben and Danielle put a lot of effort into making sure everything made sense. Despite this, the world-building is seamlessly weaved into the story. I was really interested in the history and the treaty.
I instantly related to George. I took a little longer to get behind Savi, but when I did, I loved her. I can’t really pinpoint what exactly I disliked about Savi. It doesn’t matter, though: my dislike for her only lasted the first few chapters.
I really can’t recommend this book highly enough. Buy it. Read it. Recommend it to others. Buy the book again. Read it again.
If I didn’t have a muggle job, I would’ve devoured this book in one sitting. Paranormal is my jam and Ben and Danielle KILLED it. I LOVE a book that sucks you in instantly and doesn’t mess around from start to finish. So. Much. Drama. So hyped for Moon Struck and itching to know what happens next!
In a world where a treaty keeps the peace between all the vicious supernatural creatures unbeknownst to humans, Vampire Savannah breaks the rules on a regular basis to kill her victims because she enjoys the feeling. Her best friend George has a secret too, one that has him doing dangerous activities at his unhinged mom's command. The treaty is the only thing from stopping war, but what happens when that is gone?
I had a really hard time following the story, everything felt so choppy and I spent have the time reading the book feeling lost and disinterested. Savannah the vampire would see the memories of the person she fed from (aka killed with no remorse even though there were other options available to her) and it would just randomly start so I had no idea what was present or past, or who's memory it even was.
And let's spend a minute mentioning the fact that Savannah was "in love" or at least in obsession with the boyfriend of the girl she killed- not the makings of a successful or engaging romance. The other main character George had previously had a relationship with Savannah's upstanding, basically wonderful older brother and that was a really interesting relationship but it was only hinted at, not the main focus of any part of the plot like the other love was.
Overall this was not a book for me and I could not emotionally connect to any of the characters or follow the plot really, but I am sure others will enjoy this completely different take on an urban fantasy series.
The ending will leave you craving for more. Thank goodness the books are all coming out close together.
Before the rest of the review I will say, I highly recommend this book and will be continuing with the series.
I received this book for review, and I can honestly say that as much as I enjoyed it I was slightly confused. The confusion came in the form of not understanding what the plot of the book was. I prefer to go into books without knowing much as I think it is better to discover what is happening throughout. But with this book I just found that for me there wasn't much of a plot. There was so many routs I felt like the story could have went but it didn't. I was also struggling to feel connected to the characters as I wished there was more that we got to learn about. I am hopeful however that we will find out ore about the characters within the following books.
I will however say that the writing within the book was amazing, flowing together beautifully in a way that some co-author books snuggle with. The writing styles mesh together beautifully to create a stunning story.
However, despite all of the problems I had with the book, the second half was to die for, so much action happened that you are constantly entertained. The action wasn't too hardcore which I liked as long elaborate fighting scenes I often struggle to follow along with, but the fights in this book were executed perfectly.
This is not your average supernatural book. For starters, the main character is actually a killer who essentially feels no remorse over what she’s done. This is what made me not really like the book when I started it. I didn’t start liking the book until about halfway through it.
The book has a good plot that is a bit jumbled at times but I liked it. It was interesting to find out all the supernatural rules in this world. I really liked the friendship between Siva and George, they really had an unbreakable bond.
I would recommend this book if you want to dive into a new supernatural world.
Crimson Bite is the first book in the Hillcrest Supernaturals series. One of the MC is Savannah Danvers (Savi) who is a born vampire who does not like to follow the rules designed to keep humans from knowing about supernaturals. Her best friend George is a witch from a strong bloodline who has secrets of his own tries to help her out with the mess she made with her last kill. How are they going to fix what they've done before the truth comes out? The story moves long at a good pace. Will be interesting to see what happens in the next book as this ends on a cliffhanger. l received a copy and this is my voluntary and honest review.
This is the first book I read, written by two authors. The first chapters - while introducing the characters and the story - feels like the authors need to get used to writing one book together. Having said that, after page 70 I couldn't put the book down.
Time is taken for the built-up, which is a good thing in this case, because it helps to understand the story that unfolds later on in the book. And what a story it is!
I do not always read the blurb, and in this case, I was pleasantly surprised by the book. So much so, I bought the rest of the series.
Chapters are written from Savi's and George's POV. Georges POV I liked the most.
Wow! I really enjoyed this book so much. The two narrators both have dark secrets and I love that. The writing in this book was great, the two writers have a similar writing style that really compliments each other. If you like vampires, witches, and werewolves, this book is definitely for you. I cannot wait to go back to Hillcrest for book two!
