Shadows: The Depiction of Cast Shadows in Western Art

Cast shadows have been exploited in art to enhance the impression of the surrounding light as well as that of the solidity of the casting objects. They can contribute to the mood of the scene, and can reveal the presence of features outside the space represented, but as Professor Gombrich points out, they appear only sporadicaly and have been more frequently ignored or suppressed in Western art.
Gombrich touches on the ambiguous nature of shadows in myth, legend, and philosophy, and briefly analyses the factors governing their the location and form of the light source, the shape of the illuminated object and that of the surface on which the shadow falls, and the position of the viewer.
Early Renaissance painters such as Masaccio and Campin, intent on a faithful rendering of visual reality, did incorporate shadows in their art, but artists of Leonardo's time largely avoided painting them, and it was not until early in the seventeenth century that painters - particualrly Caravaggio and Rembrandt - were again interested in the effects of shadows. In subsequent centuries artists of the Romantic, Impressionist and Surrealist movements exploited the device of the cast shadow to enhance the realism or drama of their images.

Breve saggio che si prefigge di rendere i fruitori di musei e pinacoteche più sensibili alla resa pittorica delle ombre. Il testo analizza i vari tipi di ombra e come la loro rappresentazione sia cambiata nel corso dei secoli col susseguirsi delle diverse correnti artistiche. Per fare questo si avvale delle foto di opere classiche che rendono la lettura molto stimolante perché si ha un immediato riscontro pratico. Per contro però, essendo il testo nato come compendio al catalogo di una mostra sulla ombre curata dall’autore alla National Gallery di Londra negli anni ‘90, è davvero troppo breve per valere il prezzo che costa - nonostante l’edizione molto curata.

A super short read and of course doesn't cover much. I'd been ignoring shadows in my art history studies until I read this book. It's a nice introduction to a different way of appreciating art.

National Gallery’de düzenlenen “Düşen Gölgenin Batı Sanatında Tasviri” isimli bir serginin katalogu olarak basılan bir kitap. National Gallery koleksiyonunda bulunan tablolar üzerinden sanatçıların gölgeyi nasıl kullandığı ya da kullanmadığı hakkında bilgi veriyor.

Kısa bir okuma olmasına ve rahat okunmasına rağmen sanat tarihi (en azından akımlar ve bazı temel kavramlar) hakkında bilgi sahibi olmadan okumamanızı tavsiye ederim.

Ayrıca, çevirisi bu kadar kötü olan çok az kitap okumuşumdur. Hatta editör düzeltmesinden dahi geçmemiş gibi bir his bıraktı bende. Eğer erişim varsa İngilizce baskısı tercih edilmeli diye düşünüyorum.

Tiny book, enjoyed a new way to look at some details in paintings. But this was more of a long magazine article than a book, and the paintings are too small to really appreciate them. Basically an exhibition catalog, it would be nice to see the exhibit after reading it.

Still puzzled about the term “cast shadow” - he tries to differentiate various kinds of shadows, but gee, aren’t *all* shadows cast shadows?

Bit of a mistake to read it on my kindle as its a shame only to experience the wonderful selection of images as tiny B&W thumbnails. Just ordered a copy - the written content, brief but intelligent and interesting is well worth it. Once the galleries reopen I will be on the look out for shadows!

A fascinating review of various artists works that contain shadows, how and why they work, how they are created and their importance in certain types of visual images from pre-Renaissance to Modern Art.

Something that has slipped my attention until now, that depiction of shadow throughout painting history varied so much. Just a short introduction but enough to show how much things you can convey just by tweaking the way you show the shadows on a painting.
