Sisters and best friends, Yola and Anya are the total opposite of each other. Yola is the loud mouth, outgoing, energetic, and sassy sister with a quick wit like no other. She’s on her get money, eff these men trip, all while being a hairstylist, a social media influencer, and a businesswoman. However, her world gets flipped and reversed when a paid club appearance lands her a chance meeting with an outspoken man who matches her energy. The hottest upcoming interior designer in the Central Florida area, Anya is an introvert by choice, focusing on her career and loving on her fur baby. After being betrayed in one of the worst ways, a relationship of any kind is not on her radar until an impromptu trip gives her an unexpected opportunity to open up new doors—maybe even her mind and heart. Will Anya finally let her past go and embrace the new endeavors presented to her? Similar to the sisters, brothers and best friends Dro and Xan are the total opposites but definitely have each other’s back. Learning the business at a young age, Dro’s no nonsense mentality helps him secure his position as the plug. Of course, he has women falling over themselves for a chance to be with him. He is playing the field until a feisty, smart-mouth woman piques his interest. Personally, Xan is more chilled and laid back and has only a short list of people that he deals with. Professionally, he is a beast in the courtroom, putting his mark on the legal world as a top-tier defense attorney. When an incident at a dog park lands him in hot water with a neighbor, his eyes like what they see and his heart knows its new owner. Will he get a second chance to make a good impression? They say that opposites attract. But what happens when the person you attract carries the same energy and vibe as you? Cruise the state of Florida with Yola, Anya, Xan, and Dro and follow their antics to witness a beautiful disaster or a dangerous nightmare when identical energies collide in Crushing On The Plug Next Door.
This is the first installment of a two part African American urban fiction series.
Omgggg! Yola and Dro were the highlight of this story. They were so funny. This story was engaging and so good. I loved the aspect of Anya and Xan being a slow burn. The multiple POVs was good so we could get everyone’s story. I didn’t feel bad for Priscilla not one bit. Also, all the parents were funny to experience too.
Yola is something else!! This read was a little uncomfortable for me for personal reasons but it was overall wildly entertaining! I was NOT prepared for the ending cause what the heck? Moving on to book two ASAP!
Man, Yola got on my mutha freaking nerves! I feel like she’s this ungrateful and pushy person who doesn’t respect the people around her. She wants what she wants when she wants it. Even with Dro being who he is, he still manages to consider her feelings and put her first. She’s impulsive asf! I really wish that we could have had more time with Anya and Xan! They couldn’t really flourish because of Yola and Dro. I hope that their story gets to develop more in the next installment and it’s not just about Yola and Dro.
This was such a good story. I was invested from the first page. I loved Yola and Dro. They were hilarious and so perfectly matched. I’m going to need for Anya to get with it and give Xan some play. She needs to stop blocking her blessings.
A little over two years ago, while very stoned, I regaled my girlfriend with the lore of Quan Millz, ratchet fiction extraordinaire. Like most sensible people, we laughed riotously at the utterly insane covers and descriptions of his various novels; I still plan to give some of his work a serious shot one day. But I was intrigued by how, rather than merely springing unbidden from the collective id of 4chan, his work appeared to function as a kind of satire of an entire genre of fiction nearly invisible to the general reading public, euphemistically dubbed “urban romance.” With that in mind, I wanted to see it first hand, so after a brief session of digging through potential candidates, I settled on Crushing on the Plug Next Door, imagining it to be sufficiently representative and generic for my purposes. What ensued, over a very long period, in fits and starts, was my girlfriend and I reading the book out loud to one another, cover to cover. I am intrigued by the idea of utterly unique experiences, no matter how petty and essentially pointless. I imagine we are the only people in the world to have heard every line of Crushing on the Plug Next Door spoken aloud. I am almost certain I own the only copy of Crushing on the Plug Next Door that has come into physical contact with a copy of Pierre Guyotat’s Eden Eden Eden. Like I said- trivial, but very amusing.
Wait, you want to know if the book is bad? Of course the fucking book is bad! Crushing on the Plug Next Door is simultaneously hilarious and interminably boring, its utterly deranged characters frantically flip-flopping between utter sociopathy and gushing romance inside of single paragraphs and its plot largely inconsequential until the cliffhanger ending, installed purely to split a single narrative into a book that can be sold twice. Its double narrative setup allows for a wider audience to self-insert: Anya, type A frosty professional with a tender, wounded heart, and Yola, messy ratchet hoe stereotype with dialogue and behavior so deeply outrageous the SPLC has labeled her mere existence a hate crime. While the book features all the excess and insanity suggested by the cover, the actual reading experience is largely a dreary affair. The central fantasy is not the romance so much as an aspirational lifestyle, an endless procession of conspicuous consumption and designer products described with all the love and energy which, in another book, would be reserved for human characters. Every line of the book drips with a deeply unlikeable, nearly unsettling quality; that any part of it is aspirational renders it more a horror than a romance. Combine that with a barely functional writing style so slapdash and unedited it’s occasionally unreadable- the title of the book is misspelled on the spine- and you have an artifact of utterly degenerate, narcissistic hideousness that is extremely amusing when read aloud but utterly pointless outside of that. But it sure has value in that mode: you will cackle continuously at every line of insane dialogue, cringe-inducing sex scene, and interminable description of supercars and penthouse apartments. If, for some absurd reason, you desperately wanted to read the novelization of a Megan Thee Stallion song, here’s your winner.
Lakia has a way of making her characters hilarious and relatable. Yolanda(Yola) and Alejandro(Dro) are like oil and water at first and that is because they are just alike. Yola is on her city girl ish and Dro is the plug. They have a chance encounter and Yola is instantly attracted. Anya and Alexander(Xan) are also similar calm cool and laid back. Anya has been hurt in the past and has closed herself off from love. Xan goes hard as a lawyer and his focus has been mostly on business. The two meet because of an accident at the dog park and run into each other again at the club. Xan shoots his shot but Anya declines his advances. There is family drama on the guys side that spills into the girls life when Dro’s mom makes an appearance after one too many ignored calls. I loved Dro even tho he thought he could control ever situation. He was funny and his interactions with Yola were even more hilarious. Anya moved a little funny because idc how much money a job pay if you cross my sister/best friend you are SOL. I want to see a different side of Xan. I know it’s in him because of how he was raised. I wanna see him get ruthless just once. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
Now mind you I am reading this for a book club, and it wasn’t my turn to pick the book. Outside of that it wasn’t bad for beginner readers. I think since i have read a little more and can tell my preferences I relied a lot of error. Grammar, punctuation, plot points etc. Otherwise if you don’t normally read or even if you did and you want a quick, easy and drama fill story then read this!
I feel like Dro and Yola is hands down the most toxic couple I have ever read in a book, they DO NOT need to be together 😂 like how are you gonna burn your brothers house down and still not learn your lesson?? Like he has such tight restrictions on yola and her asa don’t see that as a red flag.
Anya and Xan, omg I love them. In the begging of the book I hoped that the author would touch on them more but they really just seemed like back characters until the end of the book. Omg xan treats her so well, and after learning from her past that girl deserves it fr fr!!
The ending that it ended on was predictable once Priscilla came into the picture but before she did, I did not predict it once. It was a surprise to me.
Also the way Dro is so dedicated to Xan makes him ughhh so love able. Like yes he may annoy the actual hell out of me but omg i can’t help but love it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
First off, this is my second read by Lakia. I love her writing style, but this book PMTFO!
Right out the gate we’re talking about two sisters who are night and day meeting two brothers who are the same.
Anya is the introvert, who owns an interior design business. She is off dating after a horrible betrayal with her bf and her bff. She ends up falling for Xan who is a criminal defense attorney. He doesn’t date two much because of work and he’s just tired of playing the field. I feel sorry for them both because they have to put up with their ghetto $$a siblings.
Yola is a round the way girl. She’s all about getting money and eff these dudes. Her and Dro (a street pharmacist) are an equal match, but when I say they got on my damn nerves. THEY GOT ON MY DAMN NERVES!!!! Ghetto, classless, loud and the epitome of “DOING TOO EFFIN MUCH!” Whew chile…I think I was done with them when they “accidentally” burned Xan’s freaking house down. Anyway…the ending made me feel bad but ugh!!! Yola gets on my damn nerves. I hope Dro gets to her and they have their own ghetto $$a HEA. 🙄😒
The sisters and brothers have so many similarities!
Dro and Yola crazy and toxic AF.
The brothers are night and day and so are the sisters! Normally, they say opposite attracts, but this is similar attracts.
Dro and Yola were s turned up, but be doing too much. In the meantime, Xan and Anya were calm and no action popping with them like the other couple.
Xan experienced some trauma in his youth, but turned his trauma into positive vibes, where Anya was harboring negative energy and bitter while those who betrayed her living their best life. Guuuurl you better start living your life and stop having trifling folks continue to take your joy!
Now the girls moms stories were wild and a perfect example how some older men take advantage of these naive teenagers and it keeps going on. The men’s parents also with BS stories. These characters mirror each other.
There were grammatical errors regarding name mixup with the couples, and hopefully, the author fixes these errors!
Anya was laid back and reserved. She wasn't as outgoing or as outspoken as her sister Yola. Xan is laid back as well and is the polar opposite of his brother Dro. Anya had her heart on lock but Xan slowly and surely ease his way in. I knew the moment Dro and Yola characters were introduced. They were the two who would get together. Dro and Yola are made for each other. The both of their mouth is reckless and unfiltered. The both of them are wild, loud, and know how to act a fool. I laughed hard as hell when Dro set Yola wig on fire. I believe she finally saw he was indeed crazy. I truly understood why Dro had an issue with Yola going out. Ross seems to be the type of dude who would go after anybody that was closed Dro and that included Yola. When Dro told Yola why he don't deal with his mother Priscilla. I couldn't do anything but shake my head. Since Priscilla wanted Dro attention because he wasn't answering her calls. She decides to use Yola as a pawn.
Okay where do I start… I love the sisters Anya and Yolanda. Their sisterly bond is everything. Although they are complete opposites they mesh so well and have each other 100%. I love their moms relationship as well. They came together and basically are a blended family to both girls despite the griminess of their late father. I also love Dro and Xan. The brothers are completely opposites too but they ride hard for one another as well. I love Xan and Yolanda’s toxic but loving relationship and I love Xan and Anya’s budding romance. I can’t believe Dro’s mother is such a hateful and vindictive woman and what she did to the girls was ridiculous! I’m anxiously awaiting part 2 and I definitely recommend this book to all urban romance readers! 10\10 for sure!
When I say this book was so freaking funny!😂🤣 Yola and Dro's interactions were hilarious. I was positively gasping for air at the fireplace scene.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 They are the literal definition of "CRAZY in love" but it's clear they genuinely care for each other. I enjoyed their antics so much!😁 I also enjoyed Anya and Xan's more calm progression. Theirs was a sweet love that gave a nice balance to the craziness of their siblings. Given how the book ended, I appreciate that Ms. Lakia gave us a great character development before all the drama I can see coming happened. I can't wait to see how Part 2 unfolds because baybee, it's about to be some smoke in the city!🫣
Younger me would’ve loved all the alpha energy Dro was bringing because who doesn’t love a man who don’t play about them but I’ll gladly take the more mellow but still protective Xan.
Yolanda and Anya were both well written realistic characters that I could see myself being friends with. This books gives you highlights from their past and how it shaped who they grew up to be. Reading all the drama that is their social and love life is an experience I recommend to everyone into urban or urban romance.
The ending was unexpected and got me waiting on the next book.
Dro and Yola are so throwed off but they were highly entertaining. Truly they were the highlight of this story with their antics. Anya and Xan, the other couple in the book and their siblings(his brother, her sister) were cool. I didn't dislike them at all but they weren't that interesting to me tbh. I didn't real feel the chemistry from them the way I did with Dro and Yola. I liked that even though this is an urban book it wasn't weighed down with constant over the top drama and other BS. It ends on a cliffhanger and I can't wait to jump into book 2. Dro already hates his mom but after the end he might put in her in the ground where she deserves to be.
This is a good book, but Yola is really starting to get on my nerves. As a woman, you can’t do everything a man does and sometimes she took stuff too far. I get your father was a pedophile and low down, but that’s not a reason to act whorish and treat men dirty because of what he did to your mom. Also, she wouldn’t be in her current predicament if she would have listened to Dro and gone home instead of to the club. I don’t like Yola’s use men for money mentality, especially when you have your own and are independent and your man gives you anything you want. I hope things work out for Xan and Anya. On to the finale.
The book was well written, I like the building of the relationship. One was a grown type love the other was a immature love that even the man (Dro) was toxic the woman (Yola) was atrocious! I don’t understand these stories where the woman’s always right and everything the man sue is wrong. It makes me think the people writing this stories either have NO idea the role a good man plays on actual life or they live for toxicity!
I will read the next book for Anaya and Xan! I want to see what happens to them! Dro needs to get rid of Yola, because she’s more trouble than she’s worth!
The name changes for the characters threw me off, the fact that loud mouth Yola got herself in several avoidable circumstances and always blamed someone else made me mad. Not only that, but we continue to read that she’s so self made but all I see is that she keeps getting money from these dudes she has sex with. She is immature and doesn’t seem to take ANYTHING seriously unless it’s money.
This is a terrible representation of a go-getter…especially a black one. Hated I read this book!
Whewww I don’t even know where to began this book was so freaking good I swear yolo didn’t have no filter she said and did whatever came to mind and was all about her money vs her sister Anya she was the calm more reserved one and I respected that about her but she also didn’t play about her sister and I swear dro had me tripping the whole time that mane didn’t have no filter either I swear him and yolo act tic for tac it’s crazy I’m just curious to how this bout to play out and why dro mother took yolo wheww part 2 me please
Yola is the type of crazy FMC I tend to enjoy. She will get her lick back and do it better than him. Her and Dro together were an entertaining mess and I enjoyed every second of their foolishness.
Anya and Xan are the dignified couple. So they were sweet and cute and all that. But Dro and Yola took over in any scene they were in. Their ability to disrupt Xan and Anya each time was hilarious.
Now that the drama has kicked in, I’m curious to see what happens next. Cuz we know Dro is not wrapped too tight.
I don’t think I was prepared for this wild ass ride. Yola and Dro entertained me thoroughly. Yola definitely met her match with that one. While Dro and Yola were the messy entertainment the slow burn of Xan and Anya was really cute. And I’m sad for them that every time that the were almost going to have their moment their messy siblings came and blocked them. Can’t wait to see what happens next because what is the reason this lady came through like this at the end? I am new to author Lakia and I can tell she will definitely be added to my list of authors I need to catch up on.
Priscilla have lost her mind. She just can’t leave well enough alone. Dro and Yolanda are both crazy. Their sexual chemistry is unmatched. He got a licking and keep on ticking lol. While Anya is the Sahara Dessert. Xan is a very patient man and he’s not gon stop til Anya s on top. Anya and Yolanda are like and night and day. The same goes for Dro and Xan. I love the differences in the four and the way Dro keeps me laughing. His character is like no other
It’s been awhile since I laughed out loud while reading a book! Yolanda and Dro had me laughing at their banter or should I say their style of communication. Let’s just two stubborn people met their match! Love is a crazy thing and will have you acting possessed. I can’t wait for Xan and Anya to find their rhythm and hopefully things will blossom.
Yolanda( Yola) and Anya are sisters that share the same father Dro and Xan are brothers that share the same father, So you know this book was going to take you on a ride! I loved the way Dro & Yola started off they were hilarious and was definitely meant for each other. On the hand Xan and Anya started off rough & rocky because of the pet situation. But they are so cute.
Yolanda aggravated the heck out of me! She honestly came off as childish and selfish. She put herself and her sister in danger which could have been avoided had she just listened to Dro. I hope that he backs off her a little and makes her work for him a bit in the next one. Also, this book didn’t have enough Xan in it because it was constantly focusing on Dro and his situation.
Dro is bae with his mental azz. I love the relationship between Dro and his big brother Xan. Sharing the same no good father, just like Yola and Anya with their deceased no good father. Dro get dummy stupid behind Yola so ion know what Priscilla think she doing but it's the wrong move with the right person. I hope Anya and Xan get a chance at happiness with each other.💖💖
Wow, that cliffhanger left me speechless. I definitely didn’t see that one coming. Well, this is an interesting read. I feel like Dro’s and Yola’s relationship is on speed dial. While Anya and Xan are stuck back in the rotary phone days. Man, their relationship is moving too slow. It’s almost as if they have no chemistry. We need a little more character development with those two.
I don’t understand why the mother would do that . This book was so good I can’t wait to see what happens next because I can’t believe. How crazy Dro and Yola act towards each other. She does to much all the time. Instead of saying I should of stayed home or went home she wants to blame it on Dro smh
This book was amazing. I enjoyed every character in the book. I hope there will be a part 2. I will like to know what happened to yola and if dro will find her. I want to know was anya hurt and did dro and his brother find anya and was she able to tell them what happened and who took her sister.
