The -Ology series is one of the best child-orientated illustrated information collections I've come across. In this one, it's obviously about Pirates. Don't be fooled, though: it's accurate and contains some of the best historical information in one place. It's interactive and contains hidden letters and jewels and all sorts of paraphernalia.

From an adult's perspective: the information contained is great for research purposes and it's a great place to start for terminology and a few of the more infamous Pirates of the Seven Seas.

This format is a ton of fun, though the "old timey" script can be a little difficult to read (and I also doubt anyone would have time to journal on the cusp of battle, especially a captain, though I could be wrong).

I felt no shame picking this up for myself. It is an incredible compendium of Pirate lore, backstory and world building. The illustrations are beautiful and the stories are in-depth and magical. I loved all of the little pockets and gems. It is easily one of my favorite coffee table books, when I first bought it I would flip through every morning while I drank my coffee, it is lovely. Easily enjoyed by all ages, I can't wait to pick up the others Dragonology is next on my list!

The story is a disappointment. The larger narrative of a fictional William Drummond and his pursuit of Arabella Drummond is a painful contrivance. Too much faux cursive font is spent detailing a fictional story without stakes or themes. It's as if Pirateology is scared to let real life pirate lore stand on their own. Instead, the stories of real pirates are relegated paragraph long summaries that wouldn't be out of place on the back of collectable trading cards. This choice boxes pirates into a videogame-esk series of levels that must be bested before a final boss.

Pirateology is do focused on the what of pirate life, it forgets to think about the why?
To be a pirate is to be a monster, a pariah from the structure of modern civilization. Why would a Mariner forgo society for a dangerous life at sea. What systemic violence might they be trying to escape? What might they tell us about our own relationship with power and stories? These are vital questions to any pirate narrative and this book does not seek to answer any of them. No amount of centerfold maps or gold colored gadgets can distract from its failure to consider freedom.

The compass on the cover works and that's pretty cool. I like cool compasses. That's got to count for something

This book is excellent for topic work and information it also builds a story into the children's imagination of what life is like for a pirate. It has a real compass on the front. It is one persons tale and part diary of life as a pirate, it includes the rules of the pirates such as "if the pirates fly a black flag it means they show mercy to the pirates they in battle with." It has many pictures to show and describe the clothes worm, the treasure chests etc... There are also flaps to lift with special treasure or jewels with a description along side it. The book also describes how there are different types of pirates and the life they lead, how they caught their food, what animals they came across on the journey as a pirate sailing round the world.

This has been used for a topic for year 2 and year 3. Boys usually find this book most appealing it is an image of going back in time. Very good book to make the topic come to life.

A fun infographic book formatted in the style of a journal following Captain Lubber on his pursuit of Arabella Drummond. The interactive pieces of the journal (from fold out maps to pieces of leather cord) are captivating and enjoyable to engage with; some pieces could even be utilized for one's own pirate creations, if desired. Historical and nautical information is presented nicely in an educational and understandable manner. Overall, I still love returning to gaze over this book after all of the years I've had it. Perfect for any pirate enthusiast's collection.

When I was a child this masterpiece enscended my interest in piracy and the free lifes they lived outside of the hierarchies and systems of their times. And as an adult, it still caughts my attention to this day. Recently I read about Sir Francis Drake, and it keeps inspiring me.

I read this one time when my nephew gave up his room for me to sleep in while I was visiting. It was a lot of fun! If I had kids, I would totally buy this for them.

While I find this an accurate analysis of pirates, I'm surprised not to find a single mention of lemonade. Other than that it's very helpful.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I learned about pirates. The storyline was better than some of the other ‘ologies’ books, but the characters were lacking depth and were a bit of a joke.

Most kids like pirates, and everyone has a book, movie or a tv show that made these soldiers of the seas cool in their eyes. For some it was J. M. Barry's Peter Pan or any of it's numerous adaptations, for some it was the Pirates of the Carribean franchise, for others it was Robert Louis Stephenson's Treasure island. Whilst I was familiar with all of the afframentioned books and movies, this book is what made pirates interesting to me. Whilst some of it's aspects are clearly overly simplyfied and fictionalized (like the whole X marks the spot myth perpetuated by modern day children's pirate fiction). This book's visuals are probably the most grounded. Now, let's be honest here, that doesn't make them any less stunning. As with Wizardology I really wish I could hang some on the wall as posters.

It's an action packed and exciting journal of William Lubber, a captain of the ship The Sea Cat, who sailed the seven seas attempting to track down and bring to justice the vicious female pirate Arabella Drummond, getting into all sorts of violent brawls and tropical exploits across all seven seas. This is a really fun book if you're interested in naval history of 1700's and whilst it isn't entirely factually accurate, it's a pretty adrenaline inducing read nonetheless, guaranteed to interest pirate fans everywhere. It also features some brief clever nods to previous books in the series, bringing a smile to the face to any and all long-time fans.

My Review: I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book, but I had thought it was going to be more of a book for children. Kids could certainly enjoy it but they would need to be able to read cursive so probably 8+. For me this falls more under the category of Graphic novel, though it is a fun interactive format. The book is beautifully put together with so much to look at on each page and a lot of information, and as I said interactive elements. It does a great job of introducing both ship and seafaring terms as well as how pirates came to be and a few of their stories. All of these tidbits are woven into a story of chasing down pirate Arabella Drummond and bringing her to justice, the chase circles the globe and is a fun adventure.

You can definitely see the appeal of a big black book with "Pirate" on the side of it. The binding is sturdy and dark, and on the cover is a compass. Inside is strings and flaps, a lot like the Dragonology book, but with pirates instead -duh! There's letters and article clippings held on by tape, and what's this? Little letters and tiny books within books? Talk of treasure and gold and strange animals(name one book with a tenrec in it, seriously!), enough to really get your imagination going.

Kids will love this book, more than the dragon one though? No way! Dragons beat pirates, just ask a kid!

Not bad. I liked the illustrations of ships, I think that was my favourite part of the book. Other then that, the interactive stuff was pretty average, nothing special for a pop up/ interactive book. I was invested in the story of the chase against Arabella Drummond the only reason I kept reading was to see the way it ended, although I have to say it was a strange choice of story to have a pirate book be narrated by a privateer, but that's just my take on it. Didn't enjoy the ending, pretty mundane if you ask me. Just an average book, with decent pirate information.

This book teaches all about pirates, their customs and habits, their dress codes and behavioral codes, even their secret codes. There is also a timeline of the largest events of pirate activity in the 18th and 19th centuries. There is enough information for anyone looking to take up piracy or for anyone looking to track down and arrest a few pirates.

OK, I'm looking at this book through the eyes of a much younger me. How I would've loved to have this book as a kid. As an adult, it was a pretty entertaining, light read (slash experience, since there're so many flaps to open, papers to unfold, and stickers to peel off). There's a bit of a story as well, which was a nice surprise: I had thought this would be just info about pirates.

The format is great and the subject matter is engaging. Great for younger readers.

Definitely an interesting account of the life of pirates. Pirateology uses known facts about pirates to present an example of a pirate log, introducing topics such as weaponry, punishments, treasure, and the differences between different pirates from different regions.
