June, 1941. Villagers in the Western Ukraine were unaware that in a few days war would come to their houses. They were busy with their daily concerns - hard work and quarrels over trifles. However life changed dramatically with the arrival of German troops. In these difficult times former neighbors became bitter enemies. Some struggled with the Nazis, while others began serving them faithfully. In the novel, a lot of attention was paid to the ulterior motives that drive a person in a difficult situation. The hardships of life under occupation evoke in the heroes traits that were hidden in times of passion and cold calculation, love and hatred, cowardice and heroism. In war, people take off the mask, and appear to the reader as they really are.
Michael David Spivak is a mathematician specializing in differential geometry, an expositor of mathematics, and the founder of Publish-or-Perish Press. He is the author of the five-volume Comprehensive Introduction to Differential Geometry. He received a Ph.D. from Princeton University under the supervision of John Milnor in 1964.
His book Calculus takes a very rigorous and theoretical approach to introductory calculus. It is used in calculus courses, particularly those with a pure mathematics emphasis, at many universities.
Spivak's book Calculus on Manifolds (often referred to as little Spivak) is also rather infamous as being one of the most difficult undergraduate mathematics textbooks.
