Genre: LGBT Shape-shifter Paranormal

The night Rob Nichols brings his poisoned Malamute to the Lake Park Veterinary Hospital, he brings hope and chaos into Jamie Bretton's life in equal measures. Jamie never thought his defenses would come down so easily, but there's something about Rob that makes him throw caution to the wind. But when the two of them attract the attention of an overly curious animal control officer, they have to take big steps to trust one another, and find a way to integrate an escaped government werewolf into the life of a lonely veterinarian without anyone being the wiser.

But in the end, they'll do what it takes, because they love each other more than the moon--especially when it's full.

^^ MAN AND HIS WOLF FALL SHORT!^^
2.5

Let me start off by saying I do not write reviews to belittle an authors work or do I make it a habit of bashing books. Where this book was very flawed, there were moments when I enjoyed it. So let me say that this book had great potential to be an action packed mystery, it just fell short. I can’t say don’t waste your time reading this because everyone has different taste and also one mans trash is another mans treasure.

The book begins with a very distraught Rob whose dog just ingested a toxic poison and rushes him to the vet. There is an instant connection between him and the vet. After a few minutes of panic he finds out his dog will be okay but Rob is unable to remain with his dog so he packs up and rushes home. Then you experience Rob’s change from man to wolf, which I must say is actually some of the best parts of the book. He hates that he left his dog behind but Bella( name of dog) understands. The glimpses into his wolf mind was some of the most interesting parts of the book, to see Rob struggle to hang on to his humanity while embracing the wolf inside.

Jaime the vet is having a hard time with the mysterious and beautiful man’s dog. Bella attacked another customer and Animal Control was called; Jaime claimed the dog as his own and now he is slapped with a lawsuit and a four hundred dollar fine. Seems he has got to get a move on with finding the owner and also to appease his own curiosity about the connection he felt to the beautiful stranger. Jaime gets his wish when he asks a friend to do some illegal hacking and lands himself the address but nerves get in the way and he is unable to face him. Seems he has to keep up the charade as a dog owner for a man he hardly knows but cant help wanting.

While Rob is struggling to figure out what happened the last few days since his transformation. He remembers Bella’s accident and the kind eyes of the doctor and knows without a doubt even though he feared for his dog these last few days Bella was in good hands. So the meeting that both men has been looking forward to comes, and Jaime explains the situation with the dog. Each fighting the physical attraction to each other, and Rob has to find out from his dog that Jaime is his mate. Both men fall instantly and have to deal with the pesky Animal Control officers, Jaime finding out what Rob is and overly possessive friends. This is the story of a Man and his Wolf. What kind of wolf needs to hear from his dog that he's found his mate. Rob is that kind of wolf, COME ON!

The narrative is told between Rob and Jaime, where the writing style is not hard to follow some scenes are easily skipped over and leaves you going “huh”. Also there was just too much repetition of both Jaime and Rob’s names which at times drove me up the wall. I was like I get it, I know their names already. Where some of the dialogue was borderline cheesy that was the least of the book flaws. The story had the potential to be a great mystery cloaked in government conspiracy with the way Rob became a wolf, with his flashbacks in the book it created a perfect setting for the author to go one step further in delivering a fast paced and action packed read and that’s what bothered me the most about the writing. All that was involved was some overly curious Animal Control officers. I have no idea how hardcore ACO’s are but its just laughable their determination in trying to bring Jaime down.

The beacon of light in this dark tunnel was the throwback to how a werewolf should be, the transformation from man to wolf just sounded all kinds of painful, and the way the personality of Rob disappeared in wolf form, we don’t see that a lot in shifter books. Also the dogs were a breath of fresh air, Bella was just a force to be reckoned with. These dogs had more personality than any human in this story, they had me laughing at their antics. The chemistry between Rob and Jaime wasn’t horrible but I just could not fall in love with them, they just did not wow me. I cannot say that they were feminine but I cannot describe them as being overly masculine they were just there. Not the worst book but I cannot stress enough the potential it had to be a great book.

Once again all reviews are a matter of opinion and only you can draw your own conclusion, as for me it just fell short; too many unanswered questions and gaps.

LOVED the cover! Even if I had hated the story, I could have stared at the cover for hours and been happy! ;D

This was what we here in WV like to call a "middle of the road" story! It had its good points and it had its bad points. Strangely enough, the thing that annoyed me the most about this story was the (I can't believe I am saying this) totally unnecessary, repetitive sex scenes! I mean really... it was just out of hand! I can't begin to explain how ridiculous it got by the end! But, other than that... I can say that the story was entertaining in a meh sort of way. I can see myself reading another story by this author if the blurb caught my eye... some of my favorite authors have written a book or three that I didn't like or bored me to tears... so, I never judge an author by just one book!

I've heard this story before ... about a million times in a million different ways. With each new novel or writer it seems to take on it's own life, it's own twist, it's own unique voice.

Unfortunately there wasn't enough of a unique voice to make this novel stick out in that memorable way. Rob [which kept rubbing me raw, btw... what kind of a name is "Rob" for a werewolf anyway? Like naming a vampire "Bill" ....:] is a genetically-altered man who is forced to turn into a wolf at every full moon, and has uncontrollable shifts during times of extremely high stress. Jamie [how many times have I read a m/m novel with one of the prime charas named "Jamie"? Let me count ...:] is a veterinarian who happens to be on night shift when Rob brings in his poisoned dog Bella for emergency treatment. Someone, we find out, put a steak in Rob's truck for her, laced with rat poison. Who? Unknown, and apparently Rob never bothered to try and find out.

A serious of unfortunate events follow up and just when the story gets interesting, it turns pretty lame. Like, hobbling kind of. Numerous random scenes of gushy love and emo insecurities and Rob bursting into tears at the drop of a hat commence, broken only by one or two scenes where an animal control officer is apparently insane and out to get them. Which was just kind of ... um ... yeah.

So. Would I read again? Maybe, a long time from now. But in my opinion, there are tons more werewolf novels out there that are far more interesting.

Rob brings his poisoned dog into vet Jamie's clinic. He's totally panicked but then vanishes before he can see if she's okay. Jamie is totally smitten and eventually tracks him down. They start dating and it's hot and heavy when Jamie finds out that Rob was part of a military experiment to turn kids into werewolves. During an accident in training Rob was able to get away and has been on the run for 6 years and it's the kind of werewolf where he turns against his control on the full moon (the night he brought his dog in) or when he's under stress. There's a whole subplot of an animal control guy who is sure Jaime is breeding wolves for some weird reason. I kept expecting the military guys to show up and them to have to go on the run, but they didn't. I wasn't sure if I was disappointed it didn't happen that way or happy it didn't go the traditional route. Gee, you can't please me huh? LOL This is definitely insta-love but it's the mates things so I can live with it and Jamie and Rob have tons of hot sex, there was the mandatory nosey friends, but the dogs were really cute. It's a bit of a twist on the werewolf thing which is different. It was okay but I did seem to have trouble focusing on it. Not sure why.

95% of this book was completely unnecessary. I take 2hrs to read a book. A full novel. A novella is considerably less. How long did it take me to read this book? Why I'm glad you asked. A week. Because half the stuff in here was unnecessary. And slow. And tepid. And crawled, like a snail with a bum leg. I was bored. Then I look down and see I'm at only 45% in. Torture. I put the book down. Read 10 others. Picked it back up. Got to 59% and put it down again. I seriously wanted to scream. But I muscled through. Lots of muscle was needed. And I got to the end. I may have whispered "Thank Fuu-udge." May have. I deserve fudge after this torture. Cake too.

Was a fun read but didn't hold my attention. I thought it could have been a better story but did not evolve as well as I had hoped. Given the length of the book I would have believed the plot to be more complicated and involved. The author spent a long time on simple scenes and not enough bringing the reader through what should have been the "tough" moments. I will be on the lookout for more of this author's work since I believe it will grow.

Aside from the cover that caught me in and didn’t let me go (the two men on it are really handsome but with a sweet aura on them and they are perfect for the role they have in the book), this story was surprisingly tender, a paranormal setting with an homemade pie taste.

Rob is a werewolf, but he is not born like that; he was a foster kid and he was used as guinea pig by some crazy scientist, and when he finally managed to escape, it was to a life of loneliness. His only companion is a big female malamute, a stray dog he rescued from the street he named Bella. When Bella is food poisoned, Rob desperately seeks help at Jamie’s vet clinic.

Usually the werewolf partner in a romance is the strong element, and indeed Rob is strong as a wolf, but he is also still that little foster kid who probably only dreamed of a family and instead had a long nightmare. Rob is not self-confident of his wolf nature, he is scared by it; plus Rob has also a sweet nature, he has not the streak of a killer, despite what those scientists wanted from him. He is forced to be the alpha male of his small pack, but indeed I think that Bella is the strongest of them all, the real protector of their little family, and even Jaime, even if he is only a man, is stronger than Rob, at least since he has more steady basis.

Indeed there is a funny intake on the story, who better companion Rob could find other than a vet? Someone who is able to take care of him whenever he is a man or a wolf? But this is only a joke I did with myself, indeed the story has quite an angst development, but as I said, it never goes beyond the space limit of the neighbourhood where they live, of the small apartment where they start to know and love each other. This is not a novel with huge spaces or really dangerous developments, so that, when Rob talks about his past, even the reader has some difficult to believe him, since he is not some invincible paranormal hero, bent upon taking vengeance of who mistreated him, he is more a family guy who needs someone to take care of him and cuddle him at night, when the nightmares come back to haunt him.

The love relationship between Rob and Jaime is sudden but deep; almost immediately they go to the next level, sharing not only sex but also commitment; Rob is very physical, probably the half animal side of him needs the reassurance of the body warm, of the contact and smell. Rob is very intense, demanding a lot in bed but he is never selfish; he is desperate for love but willing to give as much as he receives if not more. He is also very emotional, his heart and feelings are really on the surface, he is easy to hurt but also to please.

Jaime is everything for Rob, and he becomes an almost unwilling protector; Jaime is not usually the character you will see as a hero, on the contrary he is more the type someone else should protect. But he is also generous and open, and those are more important characteristics for Rob than being strong. Strength he has, love he has not.

I took a chance at this, since it had pretty low reviews and was $6.49. YIKES! But, I said I would I would give it shot. I am glad I did. I think it would have been better if some questions were answered, but at the end I felt like I was left hanging.

Rob Nichols is a wolf, but he was made and not born. The government kidnapped him when he was 12 years old from foster care and experimented on him. Oh his flashbacks were horrid. That poor kiddo. Then he escapes and his hiding out.

One day he met Bella, an Alaskan malamute, abandoned. He takes her home and they become inseparable. She's the only family he has, so when she accidentally eats rat poison he freaks. Takes her to the vet and demands help. That's where he runs into Dr. Jamie Bretton who takes care of Bella. But, things get weird when Rob abandons Bella at the vet. Jamie doesn't know what to think, but he KNOWS Rob will be back for Bella.

From here things fall into place. Yes, there's insta-love, but I didn't mind it. What I wanted more of, or maybe an explanation of was

I like that Rob may be a wolf, but he's insecure. He needs the reassurance. He needs someone in his life to be there when the nightmares take over. He needs someone who will love him even if he turns into a wolf once a month.

Then there's the thing with the lawsuit. Ummm...

So while I liked it, I was just left with a bunch of questions. Oh and the term 'pal' is not a good one!

Oh and I liked how this took place in STL :)

There was something about this book, my first by Kate Roman, that just wasn't catching my attention. It wasn't a bad book, but I kept starting and stopping it. Finally, I did finish it, and while I felt it had a great premise, it didn't really live up to expectations. Rob is a were, created by the mysterious Center, painfully and against his will, beginning at age 12. He is unable to control the change, and his only friend is Bella, his pet malamute. When she eats poisoned meat, Rob is in a panic and takes her to Jamie, a vet. The story line of the Center and what they did to Rob, Jamie's back story, Rob's elusiveness after escape and the crazed animal control officer, all fall aside in favor of Jamie being Rob's mate. There are many sex scenes, many love scenes and the overuse of the endearment "pal". These take precedence over the plot, and it brought the book down for me.

Werewolf and his human lover.
A very interesting portrayal of the were, but there were some slightly spotty details that challenged my suspension of disbelief enough to pull me out of the story on occasion. Not enough to stop reading though. :)
Roman's lead characters were obviously developed in terms of depth, unique and flawed enough to be interesting. The plot lagged and felt secondary -- nothing wrong with the focus being elsewhere, but I prefer a steady stream as opposed to the flood/drought approach.
Overall, an enjoyable read though.

Decent paranormal m/m romance about a vet who meets and immediately connects with a mysterious guy who brings in his poisoned dog. I enjoyed this one, although an entire storyline of menace never really played out to be anything. Plus the sex-to-story ratio was a bit skewed. 3.5 stars.

Great heroes but I just didn't buy the villain.

P.S. Did Jamie not go to the court date set at the beginning of the story? Or did I miss something?

Очень приятная история с волком-оборотнем. Что особенно хорошо, оный вервфольф не изображает из себя альфа-мейла.

VERY raw notes, may contain spoilers but probably nothing major.

Strong men to be able to carry a malamute easily.

Not sure that a dog who got loose in an animal hospital and was vicious in said hospital to a person that here would be grounds for a criminal investigation of the dog. Animals who are normally fine are different went sick and in pain. She wasn't in the vicinity of her owner because she stayed the night. The owner didn't lose control of her, the clinic did. I find it hard to believe that hasn't happened many times and I don't see how it could be considered grounds for killing the animal when it was docile in the presence of its owner. I would think they might possible require a muzzle or something but really, it was the vet's fault completely. Actually she nearly bit someone? Then there would be no case. You don't have to kill a dog for posturing.

Okay, they lost control of two dogs in one afternoon? They have a serious problem that needs to be fixed immediately.

Dogs aren't completely colorblind--that's a myth-- and I don't think wolves are either.

I like how he was as he was coming back to being human, the confusion etc.

I love that his vet practice partner is a black woman.

Jamie's an udiot. What kind of drug dealer would hand over a bag of dope in plain sight in an open hallway in front of a goody-two-shoes type stranger?

Pretty hot sex. Oh but really way too much. And occasionally purple.

The stuff with the animal control officers and the nasty woman is all so dumb. She wasn't injured. She wasn't bitten. The dog was aggressive when it was in the hospital fighting for her life. He has records showing how often she brought the dog to him late in the evening when there was nothing wrong and then her words at the end show that she's a bitter loser.

As for him reporting he saw a wolf, he wouldn't have said that if he were breeding illegal animals. He wouldn't say a wolf came out of nowhere and saved him. If they suspected illegal wolf breeding (and a malamute does not look like a wolf except somewhat like a timber wolf in coloring and his would you use malamutes to breed wolves?) they wouldn't suspect him. They might accuse him of covering it up but they would suspect someone else at the clinic of being the breeder. Why else would he tell police about it? They would probably assume he was being threatened.

These guys cry a lot.

He should have gone what the little dog did and just rolled on his back.

It was really rude and irresponsible of Jamie not to go into work. rob was fine. He's spent dozens of days after on his own.

Cool; an author who realizes you can't look someone in the eyes clearly when your foreheads are touching: it's too blurry.

The dogs are great. The normal dog is very very much a dog.

Pencils haven't had lead in years. The "lead" is graphite.

Oh donuts, yum. Fried sweet carbs. Bliss.

I hope they occasionally clean up the feces on the roof.

Didn't explain why Bella was so smart. SHe mostly acted like a real dog at least. The dogs were well described.

The climax was pretty anticlimactic especially given the set up.

3.5 stars 4 if judged against shifter series but 3 if judged against standalone paranormal.
