Not many indy comics ever make it to 20 issues -- Zen Intergalactic Ninja is one of the rare few independent titles with more than 100 comic books to date. HARD BOUNTY collects the complete all new 6 issue mini-series starring one of the most popular characters in comics history as the heroic Soldier of Fortune attempts to collect a bounty on the head of the Universe s most dangerous serial killer. Written by co-creator Steve Stern. Gorgeous full color art by Marvel DEADPOOL artist Marat Mychaels.
Stephen L. Stern is best known as the writer/creator of the independent comic-book, 'Zen Intergalactic Ninja', which has sold over 3 million copies and spawned two videogames, a line of action figures and many other licensed items. He is also the author of the 'Beowulf', 'A Christmas Carol' and 'War of the Worlds' graphic novels, as well as the author of the official comic-book adaptation of the animated classic, 'Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol.' His current projects include 'Frickin' Butt-Kickin' Zombie Ants' and 'Serving Supes', and his autobiographical graphic novel, 'Majestic Comics', is scheduled for release in 2017. Stern is also the founder of Storyboard Graphic Novels.
A western in space. The story is simple. Zen is called in to deal with a criminal. He is called to collect a bounty. The End of the Universe bar is a wonderful setting and I hope to see more of it in Zen books. This story starts like The Mandalorian.... before The Manolrian was a thing! Issue 2 continues the steady trend of issue one. These books remind me of the Lanning/Abnett run on Guardians of the Galaxy, although perhaps they read some Zen books in the 90s? There is some nice awkward humor in the relationship between Zen and Tinhead. I love these books. I love this character and really enjoy seeing him in this very Western setting. He's a cowboy here, we'll a bounty hunter, so a cowboy in that loose sense of the word. However, I haven't mentioned the art... because as good as Marat Mychaels and as great as Mychaels Deadpool art is.... this wasn't working for me... until now. It's grown on me. This Zen has a motion and soulfulness that I had to sit with for a few issues, but I'm glad I found it. It all comes together for Zen. This isn't an epic space story or a ninja story, it's a classic western and I'm all about it. A nice conclusion to Zen and a tough loss in his profession. He's a nice guy in a not-nice line of work.
