Daniel Peterson was the Institute teacher for my BYU ward about 5 years after this book was published. I liked his teaching style and I found his Abraham Divided book interesting, so when I saw this book on the shelf at my parents' house I thought I'd give it a try. I am grateful for the research he has done. It is wonderful to have all this information organized and all together like this. In fact, halfway through reading it I realized there is a second volume and ordered a used copy for about $6. Yea!
This book is definitely more quotations from prophets and apostles than commentary by Peterson, but he has done a great job weaving them together so it makes a comprehensible study of the LDS prophecies and interpretations of the last days before Christ's coming. The footnotes are detailed enough to allow me to have looked up several of the talks and discourses to get more context. This is very easily done with apps, now.
The list of sources Peterson used is a little limiting. I found it frustrating that he pulled so much from Orson Pratt and Wilford Woodruff. I think some of this had to do with the scope of the Conference Reports he used. I didn't notice any citations after the 1960s. He did use compiled teachings of Kimball and Benson (I don't know when those were published, though), who were the most recent prophets when this was published, but surely the other apostles had much to add during the 1970s, '80s, and the first half of the '90s. Of course, digital access to all of these talks on my phone is so much more powerful than what Peterson probably had at the time. In any case, it would have been nice to have seen more quotations from the 20th Century. Maybe this topic just didn't get talked about as much. It would have been nice to have had a short introduction that explained some of this... How extensive was the research? Did prophets talk about the last days less frequently as time went on? Things like this would be nice to know.
I learnt of the testimonies of those involved in the Restoration of the Gospel in the last days and of Daniel C. Peterson's Testimony and belief as he strove to add the statements of Latter-day Saint Prophets and Apostles
Good book. Really easy read. LDS are familiar with most of the topics but some usefull new insights. Plus, I like to read Peterson. This was the first of 2 volumes. :)
