A remarkable book on what a human being is designed to eat argumented with strong scientific, biological and historical evidence. Something that should be obligatory litrature in schools or at least anyone who strives for a balanced happy life.

This book saved my life from auto-immune disease. The book is a hidden gem and information in it has the answer to help cure many ailments that modern medicine is having dire difficulties figuring out. I am in awe of how this book is not more praised and popular.

Fascinating book, especially given its age. This was pretty much what convinced me that the carnivorous diet is the correct diet for human beings - the author's comparison of the digestive tracts of humans, dogs and sheep leave little doubt as to the optimal dietary intake of homo sapiens. It's not perfect - for instance, Dr Voegtlin doesn't know how to deal with low-carbohydrate adaptation symptoms and dismisses them as mere carb cravings - but it's a real eye-opener.

TL;DR: Eat meat. Cooked plants are a poor man's inferior substitute for meat. Raw plants are a trap.

Although there are a few misconceptions due to its date and quite misogynistic in today's world, it's great :) Eat meat!

It's a relic of the time it was written in. The " science" it's imbuing on it's reader is inaccurate, and is the creation of a "man the hunter" way of thinking. Which isn't used anymore in archaeology, and it all but denounces vegetarians and vegans existence. I couldn't say it's the most appropriate for present day knowledge of the paleolithic, and not all together appropriate for nutritional advice.

9.5/10.

Much more than just a book on what is now called the “carnivore diet” (really just man’s ancestral and natural way of eating), this book takes an in-depth look into human physiology, evolution, digestion, the history of human diets, and cross-cultural dietary studies. Voegtlin, channeling his German thoroughness, wields a plethora of studies and journals, as well as his own logic, to make his case that man is a carnivorous animal. His logic is sturdy and his breadth is wide.

I recommend this book alongside Saladino’s The Carnivore Code for anyone looking to live healthily and with strength. No caloric restriction is required, nor any long bouts of knee-pounding (running), nor any ignoring of your hunger pangs. You just eat fatty meat and learn to love it. All hunter-gatherer tribes love animal fats, as do children. Sadly, many of us have been conditioned in the Skinner box of modernity to think animal fats are bad. It is time to break out of that programming and reclaim your ancestral diet, and, alongside it, your ancestral health.

The later editions changed nothing from the original 1975 text except to hid the author's promotion of Eugenics. “Geneticists have for decades deplored the unfortunate restrictions of civilization that allow the human race to breed with much less intelligence than is applied in breeding our cattle. Effective eugenics, if such were possible could quite rapidly eradicate hereditary disease and undesirable mental and physical traits while enhancing desirable mental and somatic attributes.”

This book belongs in the bin.
