September 7, 2011A guy and a girl are standing outside a car in the parking lot of an apartment complex somewhere in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Tim: Well, thanks for walking me out to my car. I guess I'm easy to jump with all these books in my hands. And if something does happen, you're a much more attractive target.
Kate: Oh yeah? You would just leave me there?
Tim: Yep. Textbooks aren't cheap.
Kate: Ha! Okay well thanks for helping me study!
Tim: Of course!, and don't forget, an increase in temperature to a gas in a container increases the amount of pressure on the container walls- not an increase of the gas's volume. Theres a difference!
Kate: Gosh, you are so smart. You should stay and study more!
Tim:...
Kate: I'm kidding, you should get home and rest. And I need my beauty sleep too!
Tim places the books in his trunk and closes the hatch slowly. He turns back to Kate.
Tim: Kate, I'm crazy about you.
Kate: What? What are you doing? I don't..
Tim: Its not a good time, I know that, but I just needed you to know.
Kate: But how? I thought you hated me.
Tim: Its two in the morning and I'm studying for an exam I can ace in my sleep. What do you think I'm doing here? I've helped you study for every exam, helped you on your lab reports and went out of my way to come to your house. I don't even like Scottsdale! Too many cops.
Kate: Tim.. I thought you were just being a nice guy. Just because I invite you over it doesn't mean anything more than what it is. Look, you're a sweet guy and super smart but.. I'm kind of already seeing someone at the moment. I'm sorry.
Tim: No, it's not your fault. I'm sorry that I misinterpreted our friendship.
Tim drives away leaving Kate in the parking lot.
The next week they meet up for lunch after taking the exam.
Tim: Hey
Kate: Hey
Tim: How'd you do?
Kate: Terribe. You?
Tim: I aced it.
Kate: Hmm of course. We should've studied more- oh I mean...
Tim: Maybe next time huh?
Kate: Yeah.
The waiter arrives with water and bread. She does not bother to take an order
Kate: Hey I have your DVD of Beautiful Girls. Did you want it back?
Tim: No, that's alright, it was jus a copy anyway. You Keep it.

Perfect Lies is an earnest book but you can't help but think some of the stories were weakened by the format of plain words on paper. You're going to need an imaginative mind to give these characters some real substance, as the book doesn't really nail it.

Eight of the short stories deserve four stars, but the rest deserve two or one. Thus, the compromise of three for the entire collection. Among my favorites: Even threes, The Heart of a Goof, The Wooden Putter, Zen Golf.
