Big pictures and short texts ... usually a recipe for disappointment for those of us looking for a thumping good read. But Trek! turns out to be the exception. I really wouldn't have wanted the author to say another word about his favorite walks around the world. In fact, Grundsten's quirky prose is fun to read only in short spurts (his first language is Swedish, and that bleeds through); but his pictures are far more inviting than the descriptions offered by even excellent nature writers.
You won't learn how to trek by reading this book, and none of the trails is described in enough detail to use this to make serious plans. So shelve Trek! with your travel writing tomes, not with your Rough Guides. Better yet, place it among your bedtime books and fairy tales and books of wishful thinking. You may find two or three chapters each night almost as good as a long hot soak.
