I loved Shion from the moment he appeared. His exuberence and determination were so endearing to me. Rei has been a bit of a quiet, but respected, background character throughout, so it was nice to see more of him. He's struggling with change, which is a big theme in this series, but learns to open his heart with Shion. They're very cute together.
Lmao this one frustrated me a bit. The back and forth between Rei and Shion was a bit too much. But overall still cute and aligns with the series. Can’t wait for book 5!
Ay! Estuvo bonito.
The beginning of this threw me off lol. It was a different writing style than I'm used to from Jyanome. It was goofier. I wasn't sure I liked it, but by the end I was happy with it.
Shion Yoshino has entered an all-boys boarding school with one goal: get a boyfriend. He joins various clubs in hopes of snagging a man, but despite succeeding at the club activities, he isn't able to get close enough to any other members so he quits and moves on to the next. Then his roommate suggests he joins the film club and there he meets Rei, who outright tells him he won't find a boyfriend in this club. But later that day, Rei kisses him and offers to date him. Shion excitedly agrees, but Rei doesn't really give him the lovey-dovey boyfriend experience he was hoping for.
I didn't love Shion's personality at first, but I think that's kind of the point. He's selfish and superficial, but by the end he definitely grows up a little. I think his bad personality mixed well with Rei's bad personality. They both helped each other grow up. I liked seeing them get closer. I also loved Shion's roommate. He was fun and I liked that the story focused a bit on their friendship. One thing that bothered me is that we never figured out what happened to Shion's friends from middle school. I mean I assume they were ignoring his texts, because he was being selfish and only talking about himself and how much fun he was having. Since he wanted so badly to show off his new boyfriend and never asked about them, but we never get any closure for that. We just don't hear from them again.
This wasn't my favorite of Jyanome's stories, but I still liked it. I also liked seeing all the characters from the previous books. It made me miss them though and makes me want to reread. You don't *need* to read the first three books to read this one since Shion and Rei have their own story, but the way the the characters that have their own books are shown and mentioned it does make it obvious that this is a companion.
Ambitious, but isn't as polished as Twilight Out of Focus or Afterimages in Slow Motion. I like the leads and their respective arcs, but the plot is scattered and the pacing is off. On top of that, I have trouble with the romance because they initially get together for superficial reasons and how their relationship progresses afterward doesn't really capture me either. That said, I appreciate how there are more interactions between the leads and their friends: that scene in chapter 5 between Rei and Jin is just lovely. I also enjoy how humorous the writing is, especially compared to the other volumes.
Hey, it finally happened we got another couple and of course it had to involve the coolest character among the cast. I always loved how all the first years and second years looked up to Rei. He just had this air about him that made him incredibly cool and honestly his design was so unique that I always had a hunch that the author had a particular interest in him. To see that happen in his own volume was great.
Honestly, I loved this volume as it introduced an actually openly out character, Shion, who knew what he wanted and wanted to get it by any means possible, even if he was targetting the hardest to reach character, even more at an all boys high school, and interestingly no one thought it was odd or out of place, and even when it seemed that way, it was just because Shion had kept to himself and never actually thought to break the wall he put up himself and talk to the other club members. While his middle school had issues, the high school is very nice and just idealistic as a nice escape from reality.
In any case, I liked how different this romance felt, especially with the experienced Kei, but seemingly unaware of what it really felt or meant to be in love. Shion did great by working his way into his heart and taking him on a journey he'd never been on before. The rollercoaster ride was fun and I enjoyed it from start to finish.
The side relationship, the friendship, with Shion and his roommate wasn't bad either. Still, it just makes me wonder...will he find a partner too, since every character with an actually unique design thus far has gotten into a couple.
Apologies for past me complaining about the introduction of a third couple. While I continue to be fairly meh about the main pairing in this series, I absolutely adore the spin-off stories. Was definitely NOT expecting to love Rei's arc so much, but somehow while Couple 1 remains bland and oversexed, Jyanome is capable of writing incredibly complex, gut-twistingly good relationships. At least when it comes to Couples 2 and 3.
I was super happy to get some delicious moments between Jin Kikuchihara and Ichikawa, since they remain my favorites from the series. But I was completely shocked by how much I loved Rei and Shion - and how wonderful boy-crazy Shion was. He could've been an ultra obnoxious character - showing up at an all boys dormitory school with the single-minded focus on finding himself a boyfriend - but he's funny and clever and hardworking and has a spine forged from steel.
I think that's what I like about Rei/Shion and Kikuchihara/Ichikawa; they're hilarious and sharp and interesting and argue with each other and then sit down and talk quietly about serious things. They're believable as couples and as friends, with great development and sizzling chemistry.
The slow build here was great, with Rei and Shion butting heads, then agreeing to date because Shion was a little bit desperate and Rei was bored and intrigued by this hotheaded firecracker joining his beloved film club in a misguided attempt to meet men. (Although it's not really that bad of an idea when there are three gay couples within the club.) They don't like each other at first, and there are some lovely aches as they navigate that, then the slow-budding feelings on either side.
I liked how patient Rei was with Shion. He quite frankly could've had him in bed within a day, even though Shion didn't particularly like him at that point, but he went at a respectful pace and checked in carefully with Shion to be sure he was really ready and that he enjoyed his first time. But it's not like Shion is any sort of a pushover; he's really the much stronger and more stubborn personality of the two, and that's a lot of what makes their dynamic work. Rei needs someone who will both push him to do better and give him his space, and Shion needs Rei's quiet, constant dedication and support.
Rei doesn't seem like that kind of person, but he's been Jin Kikuchihara's best friend since childhood. He's very patient and kind and understands vibrant personalities. It's a thing he likes about his best friend, and it's part of what drew him to his boyfriend.
I also really like the friendships in his volume. Beyond the great conversations between Jin Kikuchihara and Rei (Rei finally finding out that he's dating Ichikawa! and then asking for his own life and romance advice), Shion's bond with his very straight emo music nerd roommate is fantastic. These are the types of layers that make a story stand out to me.
The only part that puzzled me a bit was Shion's old friends seeming to ghost him once he finally had boyfriend news - I'd thought that was going to become some sort of a plot point, but he just went "ugh they aren't really talking to me anymore, what's up" and then dropped it because he got busy with the film club. I guess it wasn't that important. And really, as you move to different stages in your life, you do move on from old friendships.
Will Shion and Rei last forever? He questions it, reasonably so, but because they have that conversation and because Rei is building some of his future plans around how Shion continues to inspire him, I do see them lasting. Plus they've all got that film industry bond that will help to keep tying them together after graduation.
I don't know if this series is continuing, but it'll be nice if I get to see more of my two favorite couples. If not, their stories do close out on satisfying, hopeful notes. Well worth the read, just for these four characters.
Honestly, those people who can't see their 'chemistry' are quite slow.
This had the best character development with the leads. I like the other two couples but they have this 'common point' which is, movies, while Rei and Shion are as different they could be. A new club member with superficial reasons for joining vs a senior who holds genuine love for his club that he couldnt let go.
Despite that, fell in love not because of movies per se, but because they found out that they're not as shallow and trashy as they deemed each other to be.
While I agree that it could've been more fleshed out, it's easy to pinpoint why they fell for each other, or its easy for me to see because I commonly reread this manga atleast thrice a day.
In the end, Shion who started out as someone desperate for a dick, swore to care and support Rei whether on his studies or on his wellbeing, its lovely. You'd think he'd only want the sparkly shoujo-y bits in a relationship but its wholesome to see him care, (and the sex aftercare although we only saw a veeeery small bit) and genuinely like Rei.
For Rei, whew, can I just say I understand him when it comes to relationships? Because I too dont want my own pace to change just to cater to a person, which is why I've never had a relationship but why Rei even bothered to have some beats me lol.
And can I just say, deciding to change for someone? To come out of your comfort zone just for someone? Its a HUUUUUUUGE effort on your part, its something you think about very very carefully.
Rei, @$$hat Rei who wouldnt even budge an inch for Shion at the start, told him that 'I want to do all sorts of things for you.' And Shion responding to that with 'same, I would do everything for you.'
Honestly, you're telling me that these two doesnt have chemistry? I disagree with people who say this, it just baffles me why some couldn't see it when a lot do.
It was good but to me their relationship progress was a bit all over the place compared to the other works in the same "collection" from this author. I guess it was the pacing that was a but wonky but overall it didn't bother that much, it's just much more noticeable when you read the rest of the collection and they all have much better pacing so I was expecting the same from this one.
A LITTLE BIT OF SPOILERS BUT NOTHING IMPORTANT
Something that really bothered me tho was the plothole with Shion's friends who were hinted to start ignoring him but it just cutoff to that?!? Why was it mentioned if they weren't going to develop this plotline?!? They probably didn't have enough page to finish it but then why even introduce it?!?! They were clearly shown to be important in the beginning too, they kept speaking about them coming to his school festival, meeting his bf, etc... and none of this happens?!?!? This whole storyline disappear mid-manga. Idk maybe it was supposed to be longer or something? Whatever.
I'd say it's 3.5 stars because it doesn't deserve 4 stars but I keep the 3 for the ones that aren't bad but doesn't have anything great or that stands out but I love the cinema club, Sensei always shows us a lot about the video projects in this collection and I love that the friends are written as real people and have development too and aren't some sort of NPCs like we find a lot of in romance/bl/etc... (because apparently their only role is to listen to the mc love troubles & to just not have a life outside of that?!?)
Another perfect entry into what is quickly becoming one of my favorite BL series! I really loved Shion and Rei, and I loved to see the past volume's couples cameos as well (I definitely cheered anytime Mao and Hisashi were in the same frame together).
I just... I struggle with the words to explain how much I love this series. Mao and Hisashi's volumes, and Jin and Giichi's volume, were so dreamy and soft and really made me fall in love with the magic of film and the high school club experience.
This one was... VERY different, but I really loved it. Shion was larger than life and his whole goal of wanting to have that perfect high school Shojo romance reminded me of Haruta's High School Lala Love -- and I stand by what I said when I read Haruta's manga: I have nothing but respect for a gay kid who goes to an all boys school to increase the odds of finding a boyfriend and living out his dreams of a high school romance. Like, get it king! You deserve a chance at love too! So anyway, even though Shion was over the top, I loved his energy, and I love how he slowly began to fall in love with film, and how Rei slowly began to fall in love with him.
I don't know how jyanome does it, but they only create the best characters who are so in love it I can barely take it. I love this series. I think there is one more volume coming, and the anime, and I cannot wait for either of them.
The first half is a bit difficult, but the second half of this volume is rather lovely. The leads grew on me, and their story ended up rather sweet, and .
Like the rest of the series, anxiety, particularly about making and keeping friends, is central to the narrative. I can't say I love Shion exactly, but he does have really touching moments. I was a bit disappointed the subplot about .
I also love Rei . That was really adorable.
All in all, it's a fun volume, and if anyone - like me - is put off by the first chunk of the story, it's well worth sticking it out. Like the rest of the series, it rewards those who finish.
Are you looking for a heartwarming school drama that has spice, drama and fluff in one convenient package? Twilight out of focus might suit your needs! Not to mention it’s set in a delightful theater club you won’t be able to get enough of.
It was interesting to see how the author went with a different approach this time around! Shion is so sassy, a drama king if I’ve ever seen one. He carried this entire volume on his back (literally). But I would’ve liked to see a little more development between Shion and Rin to really be sold on them. Maybe in the next one?
Who is this manga for This series has an anime, so it’s perfect for newcomers and veterans alike! If you want something to enjoy a manga and an anime with, this is one of the strongest BLs out there to try. It’s mostly a green-light high school romance and it’s an ongoing series, so it’s perfect if you want a series to collect as it comes out. Manga fans of a fairly lighthearted story with a sprinkling of spice and some deeper moments will likely enjoy this story.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
May I say this is my favorite romance manga of all time
Did chuckle, Did almost sob.
The characters are the most realistic I've seen in manga, I'm addicted to their character development, as i not only relate to it, but can see a lot of humanity in their dialogs, I'd call this manga a character study, even.
Most people (me) don't expect a romantic comedy to be so deep, to carry the emotions it did, and definitely not to feel so satisfied when finishing it, yet crave more.
I think this is jyanome's best work, Shion doesn't feel weak as a character nor does he feel like a bland stereotype, he's a reflection of someone you might meet in real life, and I swear I've met 2 or 3 Reis at this point in life as well.
