Kenya Wright wrote her first novel during her third year at UM Law school. She dropped out a month after the release and never looked back.

Words are power,
and Kenya wants to be the greatest wizard that ever lived.

It's an audacity to inspire
and teach the healing of love through arousal.

It's this crazy idea that love
can not only help a reader escape,
but the story can also teach the person
about being human,
while making them laugh,
cry,
and hot for more sex.

Disappointing, but NOT surprising

There is a problem of Ms. Kenya’s writing that is quite irritating to me. I’ve read several of her books - some of which I’ve enjoyed. Others - I never want to see again.

The most glaring problem with her stories is how pathetic she makes the female characters. They are always super clingy and completely dependent on the male leads with seemingly no brain power for themselves. Sex is always the ONLY driving factor of these stories and there is almost ALWAYS ZERO character development.

I enjoy a good intimate scene as much as the next reader, but at some point, I want an actual plot. Some actual character development. At least ONE scene where a female character isn’t tripping over her own words because the male lead is being toxic possessive.

Now I will say this, Xander is far tamer than most of the toxic male characters she’s written, and I liked him- for the most part. However, he was so repetitious and one note that it started wearing on me. “You will stay, Camille.” “I won’t have you leave, Camille.” “Let’s have more caveman sex in this part of the sewer, Camille.” These are not verbatim quotes, but they very well might have been for all the dialogue that occurs whenever these two talk. Just frustrating. Ugh.

Camille also suffers from what I would now like to formally call, “pseudo strong woman but really spineless snivelling female character who doesn’t have 2 brain cells to rub together” A mouthful, yes, I know, but the writing of Kenya’s female characters always make me so irrationally angry.

This thing with Ian, I can already w where it’s going to go in book 2 and I’m rolling my eyes so hard. This is something she does constantly. Which reminds me, that wagon scene and even the ceiling scene- why must your male characters “claim” their women IN FRONT of another male? Is it some sadistic show of dominance, or just twisted voyeurism? Surely there is a way this can be done that’s both tasteful and erotic. Yet, in all the works of Ms. Kenya that I’ve read this, the woman is NEVER comfortable with this display. How does Ms. Wright attempt to justify it still occurring despite their discomfort? She makes it so they are so overcome with sexual pleasure that they forget that they are being mere pawns in the display of the assertion of dominance for the male lead.

This book was 294 (or so) pages and there was NO CONFLICT. Just pages and pages of no growth between the characters and sex scenes that did nothing to drive the plot forward and immature displays of chest beatings.

For a book that started so strongly, I’m disappointed that this was what it turned out to be. It’s not surprising, as I’ve now come to expect this from Kenya’s works. Which was why I decided after my last read to reduce my consumption of her materials.

I’ll be reading the second instalment because despite my disappointment, I have this annoying reading habit to see to the completion of a book series I’ve started. I hope to break away from it eventually- working on doing so. A small part of me is also hoping that Kenya will prove me wrong and cause me to come back here and say how wrong I was and eat my words. I’m not holding my breath, but we’ll see.

Also, there were some continuity errors. One of them was the bath scene. The paragraph Before explained how Camille had stripped out of her pants before entering the bathroom, then the paragraph following that had her preparing to unbutton her pants. That’s not the only continuity issue in the book. There were a few grammatical errors as well, but not enough to have me screaming, “where is your publisher?!” But enough to be noticeable.

TLDR; same old, same old from Kenya. Weak female character, sex to distract from lack of plot, voyeurism without consent, cliffhanger.

The male love interest doesn't understand the word "no" and spends the whole book badgering and harassing the FMC until she gives in. On top of the fact that she gets drugged by his bite and can't properly consent because it messes with her hormones. This whole thing was rapey and weird; I'm glad it's over.

Couldn't put it down!!!

This storyline pulled me in, and I couldn't put it down. The different take on vampire and magic has sparked my curiosity. Xander and Camille, I'm enjoying. However, I don't think I really trust Ian, but I would like to; let's see how this goes. Oh, and the sexual scenes are hot!!!

Once again she weaves a tale that is riveting and new. Sensual and erotic. Dangerous and sick. Menacing. A destructive beauty that sweeps you to great heights.

Kenya Wright Nails the Supernatural

Always a five star experience with Kenya...
This supe fantasy romance is incredibly well done. Our heroine is enslaved by a vampire king who ruthlessly rules over a supernatural kingdom on another planet. She escapes with the aid of a princess and a handsome stranger and so a tale of secrets, adventure and romance begins.
As a fantasy fan I recommend. The world building is excellent - just enough to immerse but not so much that it gets bogged down in it's own lore.
In terms of supernatural themes Kenya puts a fresh spin on a reliable trope. The lore! Oh so gripping. The adventures filled with tension, mystery, action and a little humour.
The romance? Well. Our KW never disappoints. The journey our MCs take to come together is heartbreaking, spellbinding and dangerous. You'll be on the edge of seat. You'll be intrigued. You'll be torn. You'll be rooting for them. And so happy!
Lots of steamy sexy moments. Also this is a story with vamps so...there will be blood.
I highly recommend to supernatural/fantasy romance fans. You'll love this and it's def something you haven't read before! For dark romance fans - just dive in I promise you'll love it.
Thanks Kenya!

"Spellbound in the Wee Hours: A Fantasy That Packs the Perfect Spice!"

Oh man, this book had me hooked! For all the fantasy lovers out there, this one's a real treat that hits all the right notes. The way the world comes alive in the story and the plot unfolds is just brilliant. It’s super easy to dive into, and let me tell you, the spice? It's just perfect—enough to keep things interesting without taking over the whole story. We get to see everything through Camille's eyes, but I'm sitting here wishing we could get a peek into Xander's head too. And yeah, I totally lost some sleep over this one, staying up way too late because I just had to see how it ended.

The character development was an afterthought. I had no care or interest in any of them…

It’s about two horny bonded people. Big whoop.

She’s a red headed mage. Okay?! And?

Her healing blood is gonna revive grandpa with two schlongs… while his nephew is growing horns and just wants to rut. There’s the plot in a nutshell… so I guess if you just want some weird smut without a plot this would be the perfect book for you, because it was just an elementary paranormal erotica attempt.

I nearly DNF the book multiple times just because I kept thinking surely there’s SOME substance. I really hoped someone would die and it would end.

I like my books deep and gritty and with substance. This was just smut, which is great if that’s all you want, but I feel like I lost brain cells reading this.

mage and vampire

First, the main character was aggravating. She was giving out blood like candy. But why a cliffhanger? This could’ve even one book.

*****Spoilers*****

Camille is a domina, one of a select group of women capable of having vampire children. The king of the realm, the Quiet King because he's deaf, blind, and mute, collects the women and had children with them. The women are capable of birthing 6 vampires at a time and it takes the baby vampires 3 years to grow into adults. Camille volunteered to go to the king's baby harem as a sacrifice to save the people of her town even though she had a husband and children. The book opens when Camille is 2 years out and ready to escape the king's clutches because she learns the king orders all prince baby vampires that are capable of becoming kings killed at birth and Camille is NOT okay with that program. She's determined to leave and go back to her town and family.

Camille is helped from the king's castle by Octavia, a human-vampire princess and daughter of the king. Octavia takes Camille to her vampire brother Xander who agrees to take Camille out of the city. Unknown to Camille, Xander is a prince capable of becoming king and neither of them understand why their attraction is so potent or why Xander is drawn to Camille. The rest of the book is an interesting mix of revelations, crushing disappointment, new friends/allies, and lots of passion. Camille and Xander are likeable so that's a plus and once Camille sees that her family has moved on without her, she's more available to throw herself into whatever Xander wants her for which is his queen.

I was hooked on the story, not from page one because it was confusing, but close to. I wanted to know why Camille was running and why Octavia was helping her. Once Xander enters the picture, the mystery surrounding him gets deeper before we learn more. In the end though, despite the book being a page turner, glaring issues plague it that are easy fixes. Consistency is a major issue with this book. In one scene a character is doing something or did something and the next, they're doing something contrary to what has already happened. Grammar and spelling are also pain points as well as the author's selective use of senses to enhance the story. Sight, sound, touch, and especially smell need some help throughout the book.

Xander—-Love him!!!

Book one of The Immortal Crown saga delves into a world where sacrifice and betrayal intertwine with love and loyalty. Camille, the protagonist, is faced with an impossible choice she sacrifices herself to save her loved ones by succumbing to the demands of the Vampire King. The narrative weaves a complex web of intrigue as Camille navigates through her decisions, uncovering secrets about her family lineage along the way.

Camille's inner struggle is palpable, as she grapples with the weight of her choices. Her determination to protect her family adds depth to her character, making her a relatable and compelling heroine. Xander, on the other hand, initially appears as Camille's salvation but evolves into a character riddled with complexity and ambiguity. The shifting allegiances and hidden motives kept me on the edge, adding layers of suspense and unpredictability to the plot.

However, while the story is rich in complexity and intrigue, there are moments where the pacing falters. Certain plot points feel rushed, leaving little room for exploration and development. Additionally, some aspects of the world-building could benefit from further elaboration to fully immerse me in the intricacies of the setting. The story is a captivating tale of sacrifice, betrayal, and the complexities of love and loyalty. With its compelling characters and intricate plot, it offers an engaging read that left me eagerly anticipating the next book in the saga.

Interesting

This is one of my absolute favorite writers, I was hesitant to read this because the way most BW authors write black heroines in fantasy/ supernatural stories leaves a lot to be desired. I liked this though. It's a bit odd that she's married with kids but I assume that will make sense in future installments. It was getting a tad bit redundant how hot. & cold camilla was with Xander. The Ian stuff is interesting, making him overly sexual with Camilla was a choice. I really hope this next book isn't gonna be everybody trying to violate her because they must have her. My other unease with bw writers in this sub genre is their obsession with treating r@pe like its about desirability. Every man must have her because she's so irresistible that he will take it against her will, Ive read so many fantasy books where this was the theme to prove how stunning she was. Not sure why bw authors of all people would want to equate that act with desirability.

a really good romantasy

I really enjoyed this one. This book has everything you want in a fantasy. Great storytelling. Great world building. A quest. Forced proximity. One room, one bed. A secret heir. One bite and these two were obsessed. Some things were predictable but then there were some plot twists throughout the story that I was not expecting.

I feel like Camille was a bit too friendly. Like stop telling people your name. You’re on the run! I think Camille should’ve confronted her husband. Also, I felt like she should’ve done more about her kids. But it’s understandable to not to disrupt their lives.

A few minor misspellings. It’s breathe not breath! I found some things repetitive. The book wasn’t too long to remind the reader of certain facts.

Ooh Vampires and blood and kings

This author has never let me down. Her writing style is great and her dialogues are always so real.
Xander and Camille start off rocky lite. With dear Xander being a grumpy Path Finder, helping her to escape the clutches of a creepy ass vampire king. The budding romance and the changes that happen between them is hot and really make me wanna find a dude that immediately says I’m going to be his queen and wants to hear me say it (teehee). Anyways the plot was very gripping and I absolutely love uncle Ian - can’t lie I almost like him more than Xander at times. I can’t wait to see the rest of the story unfold in the next book. And I’m happy to see I don’t have to wait 😜

Yasssssss 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I’m a huge fan of K.W, I love her writing style, the way she weaves her stories together ESPECIALLY the “Lion & The Mouse” series. Well so far this is just as good to me!! Talk about foreplay 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨 I don’t smoke but needed one. I love the suspense, the intrigue, I love the ALPHA male her characters are and their ride or die women. I wanted to give her time for the second book to come out before diving into this series. Now that book three is out, I’m full force with anticipation. I’ve read the reviews for for this series but I still like to form my own opinion because we’re unique that way. Thank you K.W for ALL your hard work, for your dedication and determination to keep supplying us with beautiful books/novels.

Enjoyed the story until Xander started manipulating Camille non-stop into giving in and having sex with him by telling her that her husband obviously didn't care about her 3 years ago because he let her sacrifice herself to the Vampire King to save her village from famine. He literally would not drop the damn subject until she caved.

No. Nope. Sorry, fuck that noise. I get that he was "drunk" on her, and I get that her husband is a weak mf for not even attempting to stop her or change her mind, but is adultery really that sexy? Even a loveless marriage still deserves better. I literally only read till the end to see if we'd get closure with her husband and daughters and lol, we don't even get that. Wonderful /s

I have no respect for Xander (or the author) any longer.

Excellent Read

Wow, I really enjoyed this story. It was very detailed and well written to the point where you could visualize everything that was happening. I love the “bond”, connection and chemistry between Xander and Camille. They had not even know each long, but seemed to be drawn to each other instantly. Xander’s behavior was a bit thirsty though, which was alittle bit annoying at times. I guess that is what happens to a “ripening prince”…lol. Anyway, I look forward to reading part 2. Great job, Kenya Wright!

I was curious about how this storyline would go. After all, a specific type of female possessed a rare blood type, which allowed them to procreate with vampires. This leads to a character named Camille, who possesses this rare gene and lives with the Quite Vampire King. Now Camille is on her quest to get free to return to her family, but with the help of Xander, a Vampire that is skilled to escort her out of the castle and out of the city to get to her destination, but along the way, it is so easy due to the constant threats and such. But anyway, it's a good read.

I really had a good time with this book. I gave it a solid 4.25 and that’s only because I feel like I need a few more things explained such as why the attraction was so instant, it makes sense for him but it really doesn’t for her. I’m hoping that we find out more in the second book. Also I’m interested in seeing if she finds out more about her family’s past and how it may tie to the current king and the death of the old first queen. Overall I’m excited to continue!
