Sweet and innocent stewardess Lyn Maxwell is dating handsome pilot Beric Dane. They are falling in love and everything is wonderful until one day, after a flight, there is a customs check at the airport and heroin is found in Lyn's bag. After Lyn is questioned by the police, and put in jail, she eventually goes on trial and is found guilty of smuggling narcotics into the country. She is then sent to prison for three years. During this time, Lyn, who is innocent, is trying to find out who planted the drugs on her. The only person who had access to her bag at that time, and could have done it, is her boyfriend Beric! Angry and hurt, Lyn spends years in prison, planning her revenge against (innocent) Beric. When she finally gets out of prison, three years later, she gets plastic surgery, dyes her brown hair blonde, changes her name, and goes looking for Beric---I don't want to give any more of the plot away.
This was a really over-the-top read! It wasn't a very romantic story, since the heroine was so consumed with revenge, but I still had a hard time putting this book down. I was always curious to see what was going to happen next. Lyn wasn't a very likable heroine. I felt sorry for poor Beric! (Even though it's fun sometimes when the heroine gives the hero a hard time, it's usually the other way around in "Presents"!) It was interesting seeing how innocent Lyn became so cold, hard, and determined after prison. This was a very enjoyable vintage "Harlequin Presents". A captivating and crazy read!
WOW. What can I say? This is definitely one of the best bat-shite crazy HP's out there and had me hooked from the first page till the last page. In fact, I found most of it pretty credible (what the heck does that say about me?)
A young flight attendant is framed by her co-workers and sent to prison because she is found smuggling heroine into the country. She suspects that her boyfriend who happened to be the pilot was the person that actually framed her, so she confronts him. A violent argument ensues where both walk away believing that the other betrayed them. He accuses her of trying to place the blame on him. To ensure he doesn't become the "fall guy", he goes out of his way to make his testimony so airtight that the jury convincts her in less than 20 mins. She is sent to prison for three long years where she spends every minute plotting her revenge against him. She is cold hearted all the way through and she never forgets for one minute what he did. I loved the descriptions of how icy her skin felt every time he touched her!
I never thought these two had a chance in hell to forgive each other and move on, but the author actually pulled it off. There was only one place where I felt things weakened Nevertheless, this was so good, I had to look past that slight flaw.
One final point, I didn't care for the heroine in the beginning. The author wrote a very naive, gullible woman. After finishing the book, I realize that this was intentional and necessary in order for her to be victimized. She grew into an incredibly strong woman, hardened from three years of prison. Her transformation was part of the ride, and I felt it added great depth and credibility to the story.
This is a must read for all HP fans. I can see why Jacqueline goes back and does a re-read every year. This is well worth it.
Someone should KILL me for not reading this AWESOME book sooner.Just WOW..wow wow wow...what a dark and entertaining angsty romance..one i will never forget and one i will certainly re-read."The Judas Kiss" is my second book by this author..and has come to be one of my bigger favourites of Harlequin Romance!
In all the levels from the start of the book Sally writes as a Prom, and her beautiful language to the details of the places and sitauations just baffled me..and her characters were Magnificently intruging, the heroine and hero captured me and their chemistry just sizzled me in wonder and i was so nervous throughout the second part..cuz i knew that the bomb would soon about to fall..and i was addicted while reading it.
Beric Dane and Lyn Maxwell (Netta Lewis) are such a Dynamic Force together that i got obsessed with anticipation of their every scene. How they misunderstood each other so horribly from the beginning..and how cruelly and cold-blooded Lyn was in her revenge towards him just utterly fascinated me.Never in Harlequin History do i think a heroine has ever made the hero suffer as Lyn did to Beric. Not even in "Temptation","Past Revenge","A Man to be Feared"..and on and on.This was a truly vengeance-obsessed heroine who became a determined and ruthless woman after her years in prison..and she got through with her revenge without remorse...and i have to say, this heroines intellengence and charisma facsinated me..and i was like Wow..!
With a ruthless plot she succeded in winning Beric`s heart...and Beric...What a man!...He is one hero i will never forget. How he loves just completely cut me..and how he fell madly in love with his heroine was just so clear. That he was a pilot just made him much more interesting (i so far remember all heroes in Harlequin being tyccons,millionares..).His chemistry with the heroine was so electric..and WOW what a sexy Alpha he was!The sexy scene with him and Lyn in the locker room are forever inprinted on my mind.Beric was a besotted and totally bewitched hero..and i just fell in love with him so much.(Sigh)
The scenes between them was in all kinds of flavours..pure lovely, passionately hot, extremely explosive and angsty in a epic kind of way i will NEVER forget."The Judas Kiss" are one 5-star read that deserves hundred..thousand..million stars...I Just Love It.!
Okay, this is the crazy wackadoodle, angst fest by which all angsty romances should be measured. As you read The Judas Kiss you realize that there is fiction then there is FICTION. When I first read it I gave it a two star rating, but upon reflection and several HP's since, I've realized the brilliance of this piece. Our little heroine takes the concept of spineless doormats and not only throws it out the door, she lights it on fire with a molotov cocktail, darling.
Lyn is in luv with alpha hottie, Beric (best name ever) who happens to be a pilot. That alone tells you how old school this is, harking back to a time when pilots and stewardesses were the height of cool and risque. I guaran-damn-tee that this H has sideburns, wears Brut and probably listens to Engelbert Humperdink when it's time to make the moves on the ladies.
Long story short, Lyn is found with heroin in her bag. She thinks Beric has set her up. She knows she's innocent and who else could it be? Off to prison for three years, where she plots various ways to get her revenge. One option is to simply plant heroin on Beric, but heh, heh, heh that is far too easy for our sweet little vixen. Oh no, what she comes up with is far more clever and cruel. If I were Sally Wentworth's husband, I would make sure that she had a darn nice birthday present that year because she knows revenge and something made her cranky this year for her to write this story.
The long con indeed.
As someone said in another review, this plot has a lot of similarities with an Australian tv movie, Return to Eden. Over the top and awesome.
P.S. This book is on nine lists from Vengeance is Mine, Angsty/Tearjerkers, Craziest Harlequins, etc.
1981 Nineteen year old British girl Lyn was working for an international airline as a stewardess for the last three months. She was doing transatlantic routes and had a crush on one of the pilots, thirty year old Beric who was gorgeous, the most sought after bachelor on the airline. She was very much in awe of him and when he asked her for a date she was over the moon. They had been dating for about six wonderful weeks and were madly in love, or at least Lyn was.
SPOILERS LIGHT The book started with the main characters having a three day lay over in Miami. The flight back to England was uneventful. As she and Beric were walking toward the customs at Heathrow Airport, Beric took her bag from her so she could look for her passport in her handbag. For the first time ever her bag was checked at the customs desk and a carton of talcum powder was found. The carton contained heroin.
The police arrived and Lyn was arrested. Beric accompanied her to the Police Station. He told her that they were to fight it together to prove her innocence. She was interrogated and she made it very clear that she was innocent. The next day she was granted bail but nothing was the same after that. She was suspended from work and her parents rejected her.
Her solicitor told her to think very carefully back and see if she could remember if and when anyone ever had the opportunity to plant the drugs in her bag. Lyn remembered that Beric had taken the bag from her. That he had dropped behind for a few seconds while she was looking for her passport and she had walked on, her back on him, then he had caught up to her and gave the bag back. It was Beric who had planted the dope on her. No one else had the opportunity. It had to be him!
Her emotions fought against accepting it. She was so in love with him that she just couldn't believe that he could deliberately have done it to her, and even less could she believe that he felt nothing for her, that it had all been an act to win her over.
When Beric flew back to England she was waiting for him at the airport. She asked him why did he put the dope in her bag knowing that she'd be arrested? He said "Do you really think that feeling as l do about you, l'd let you suffer if l could avoid it, and especially be the cause of it? Do you?" But Lyn did not believe him. He told her that he could not forgive or forget what she had just accused him of. He said that maybe she was not as innocent as he thought she was. The two did not speak nor did they see each other after that.
Lyn's case came up for trial quite quickly. Lyn was found guilty of smuggling narcotics into the country and was sent to jail for a term of three years. In jail the hate that was already festering inside her took over. It became an obsession how to get her revenge on Beric. She had three years to come up with a plan. In the meantime her beloved aunt (the only one who believed in her innocence) died and left Lyn everything she owned.
Three years went by, Lyn was finally out of jail. She had plastic surgery that changed her facial features and made her look very beautiful. She dyed her hair blonde, wore coloured lenses and changed her identity. She was now ready to re-enter Beric's life!
It's like mixing any number of the 80s plastic surgery-revenge films like Return to Eden or The Promise with the Airport trend of the 1970s which resulted in such campfests as Flying High with Connie Selleca and View from the Top.
It starts with 19 year old stewardess Lyn in love with 30 year old pilot Beric. Lyn thinks Beric framed her with drug smuggling which lands her with three years hard time in prison. After she gets out, she gets some magic plastic surgery which makes her drop-dead gorgeous instead of the catwoman Jocelyn Wilderstein and a new ID. She tracks Beric in Singapore and gets him to fall in love with her by being a total "The Rules" girl. She gets him to marry her and disappears on their wedding night, making him think she was kidnapped/killed. All the little touches she use to twist the knife in as he searches frantically for her as she watches in sadistic glee is Teh Awesome.
The resolution of the ending is not totally satisfying emotionally but still, a well-written book.
She’s a cold-hearted snake Look into her colored-contact eyes Oh, oh she’s been telling lies She’s an ex-convict at play You ruined her life, now you're gonna have to pay She don't play by the rules oh, oh, oh Boy, don’t play the fool
You can find somebody better boy She could only make you cry You deserve somebody better boy She's c-cold as ice Co-co-co-cold hearted oh, ah, ah Co-co-co-cold hearted snake
Payback IS a bitch and her name is Lynette Maxwell. Dear, "sweet" Lyn carried out her vendetta in cold blood, taking stabs even after she'd dealt her first blow against the man she once loved and who she believed framed her.
I understood Lyn's motive for turning into Cruel Heroine Extraordinaire, but my biggest problem was that I didn’t feel the supposed love she felt for Beric—especially at the end—so the HEA felt unconvincing and unsatisfying.
You took three years of my life! You took my name, my home and my parents. You left me with nothing! Nothing but hate.
Lyn later claimed she hated herself for the vindictive person she'd turned into, but I didn't buy it as her internal reflections and latter actions didn't reflect this. Nor was there any suggestion that she'd suffered remorse during the one-year gap between doling out her revenge and reuniting with Beric.
To make matters worse, Lyn's accusation against Beric seemed flimsy because anyone on that plane could have planted the dope. The true Judas in this sad tale of revenge? Lyn. (Yes, I said it.)
Beric, at least, didn't betray their newfound love with his lack of trust. And while I felt sympathy for him, he seemed more like a plot device than a fully-developed character. No, this story was all Lyn's. A story which ended on a happy note because, luckily for Lyn, Beric's love was just as strong as her hate.
This is one of my all time favorites. I reread it every nearly every year. I love revenge plots. It is rare that you have a female ex-con in a book and she's so cold. Love it. It does seem to be one that people have strong feelings for one way or another. Some find it too harsh.
I finished reading The Judas kiss. I can't believe what a story. I was crying by the time I got to the end it was so bittersweet. I felt so sorry for Beric - unique name and pilot captain hero.
The honeymoon from hell ohh myy ohh myy - unbelievable stuff- pure pure torture.
It was very moving and gripping. One of the best hp Novels that moved me to this level. There was moments I was shocked, laughing and crying.
I agree it's up there with you point in this being the only heroine who made the poor hero suffer to this level. There is loads of heros in hplandia who deserve this treatment. I can't stress how much I enjoyed reading this book.
If a HP novel should ever be adapted for film this should be one if them! 💕
Reread - 1/9/18
Just as good the second time round. Loved this it was just OTT. I read many times h trying to get revenge but she started and finished it even when she felt like she was wavering but it's true reflection of three years of planning and just to much anger. I still can't get over the what she did in morocco, goodness me I am still shaking my head. Poor Beric.
The psycho heroine has no price. She thinks the hero framed her with drugs so she plans a very psycho revenge, having plastic surgery and making him fall in love with her again, and afterwards she dumps him, just like that. Oh, the culprit was a colleague that was a junkie and a drug dealer. She hid the drug inside the heroines bag. Poor hero was innocent and was even ready to confess something he didn’t do to save her from jail, but she thought he was guilty. Eeek. This is SW for you. He wasn’t celibate, she was, but she’s crazy and I don’t want to know how their married life will be.
This book reads like one of those 90s Lifetime original movies that's so addictive and combines like three seasons of ridiculous soap opera plots into one short novel. The book spans over four years and takes the main character from a sweet, happy-go-lucky flight attendant to a hardened ex-criminal with cosmetic surgery. Pure Awesomeness. There are no other books like it. And it's beyond amazing that it's all condensed in less than 200 pages.
I was telling a friend of mine how these older HPs have such memorable plots that stay in your mind unlike the modern HPs with the interchangeable titles like "The Greek Billionaire's Virgin Deal Marriage Affair" or the "The Sultan Sheikh's Pregnant Virgin Mistress's Baby." Whatever happened to catchy awesome REAL titles like Judas Kiss, or a Song in the Wind, or whatever those titles they had back in the day, when HP editors were still making sure they printed actual books, not just interchangeable literary porn?
Lots and Lots of Spoilers
Anyway, I'm getting off topic. This book. The girl, Lynette has a happy relationship with Beric, the co-pilot, and thought she was just a lucky, lucky girl, as, though she was attractive, was not beautiful, and was made out to be a pretty average gal. Cue their return to GB after a layover, and after a security check, she gets hauled in for questioning because a container of drugs was found in her bag, and her teddy bear ripped up (this made me sad). Long and short of it, she was detained in prison, which made her anxious, afraid, and thinking up how this could have happened. In her panic, she realizes that Beric was the only one who had held onto her purse at any time since they got off the plane...which was the last time she checked her purse and saw there wasn't a vial in there. When he comes in to see her, she tries to calmly ask him, but tensions are running high and both of them start arguing and ends with her accusing him. It doesn't end well, and Beric doesn't confess but stalks out and informs the police on duty that she was going to try to pin it on him.
She gets sent to prison and becomes estranged from her parents who are unsympathetic and uncomfortable with this whole deal, and only hears from a great aunt of hers, whose later death impacted her greatly, as she was the only last loving link in her life. After that, she changes entirely and starts to plan an elaborate revenge -- getting out, tracking down Beric, and planting some drugs on him and landing HIM in prison. See how he likes that, and then dramatically visit him later to tell him he got what was coming to him, the crack dealer. (By this time, she was convinced that as a pilot, he had the perfect cover to fly around and use the passengers and/or crew to ferry his drugs for him.) Lynette then spends her time in prison meeting acquaintances who can further her revenge.
When she comes out, she goes to it -- her friend meets her at the prison doors, and introduces her to the people who did her (the friend's) plastic surgery. She goes and gets her hairline changed, her chin and nose changed, and had her eyes pulled further out. She then dyed her lashes and hair blond and wore contact lenses. I liked how the author stated that although now she was beautiful, she realized that there was a difference in how people treated her -- before men would joke and flirt happily with her, but now people stared at her, this ice princess.
She then tracks down Beric's crew and finds that he flies international -- I think it was to Thailand, and she flies out there and gets a job teaching kids and manages to stay at the hotel the crew stays for layovers. At this point, she wants nothing to do with him because she hates his guts. She manages to cozy up to some of the girls from the crew and starts to hang out with them. Beric is intrigued by her and starts to come onto her, which she parries and rejects, which makes him even more inflamed with DESIRE. Meanwhile, the author has described him as changed as well, older, harsher, a lot more cynical, and never dates flight attendants.
Anyway, her plans then change when she realizes that he was falling for her, and then she realizes that it would be even BETTER if she were to
Anyway, this entire book was beyond amazing and is a true classic. I love revenge plots, especially when the woman is the one getting it. Another really good one that I love is No Sad Song by Alison York. I don't know how easy that is to find. It's not as crazy as this one, but it's also the girl getting her revenge and it backfiring in her face...or her throat, as the case was.
I have seldom read a book where a heroine is so ruthless and would do anything for revenge, truly kudos to her for having the guts to go through with it. The heroine was 19, an innocent when she started working for the airline and fell in love with the hero a pilot. Six weeks later she was arrested for drug possession and all the while she thought she would be proved innocent and then she tried to think back and only the hero could have planted the drugs on her, she told him did this and he told her that he loved her and would have been willing to take the fall for him but her accusations made him think she was guilty, so she was convicted and spent three years in prison. Her parents gave up on her and she became consumed with hate and revenge and went about planning it, making contacts with the women inside and when she got out, she did it, changed her appearance, making contact with the hero, making him fall for her and then disappearing on their wedding night, making him think she was kidnapped.
She meets him again fifteen months later and he knows and despite his anger tells her he truly thought she was guilty and that he tried to erase her from his life but maybe he didn't that is why he fell in love with her other avatar. In the end they do find who set her up and I didn't like it that the heroine let that person go, she should have cleared her name. Truly what the heroine did to him was horrible, he spent six months searching for his wife but he forgave her because she truly thought he was the one who had wronged her. For hardcore revenge, read this book. I loved the heroine's coldness even if she targetted it towards the wrong person.
Talk about misplaced revenge!! However, it is not the hero this time, it is the heroine. She is hellbent on revenge, and she is not tepid about it .
Now this would be all fine and dandy if this were the movie Double Jeopardy where the hero actually deserves all of her spite, but unfortunately like the the heroes of many HP’s before her, she totally gets this wrong.
The hero(29) is a pilot the heroine a stewardes, Lyn, (19)(hey its the early 80’s so not attendant here!). They fall in love…heroine even tries to take their love to the next level, but he respects and loves her too much for that. She is not like the other gals.
They head back home and there happens to be a surprise inspection at the airport. NO biggie, except when inspecting her talcum powder container, they find the powder is of a different sort all together.
The hero, who obviously loves her is supporting her 100% However, she is 19, her parents are very preoccupied with appearances, and I am pretty sure she was born to fulfill the “well we should at least have a kid”. It doesn’t sound like she went without anything growing up, but the love given to her was probably more out of duty than genuine heart aching love. So maybe that is why she was determined to believe that the H planted the drugs on her. Maybe that is why she believed she was being used by him for nefarious means. The only thing linking the H to her purse with the talcum powder is when he held it for a few seconds.
So she turned on him. Decided she was going to tell how it must have been him. She alienated the one person who truly loved her. In fact, he was willing to take the fall for her. He didn’t want to see her go to prison, but once she threw her accusations at him he thought that maybe she wasn’t the innocent he thought her to be. In the end she is sentenced to prison for 3 years and the H goes on with his life a little more jaded about women in general.
Her parents basically cut all contact with her except for an occasional birthday card or Christmas card. This really pissed me off. I mean the girl was such a Pollyanna how could they believe she could have done that? How could they abandon her? My reaction to the parents rejection of their daughter struck me as a little ironic. When I read real news, of parents supporting their grown child when their child is so obviously guilty I am like how can you do that? However, I am talking murder cases(not drugs)such as Scott Peterson, Chris Watts, or most recently Brian Laundrie etc….Yet, these men were once someone’s precious boy, and maybe they really are able to give out a public persona that perpetuates the myth that they are good and wholesome. I’m like “take the blinders off” especially as in the first two cases where there were children involved. Sorry for the rant, but me being mad at the fictitious parents of a fictitious daughter struck a chord in me.
The h is fermenting in hate as she attends prison for 3 years. She hatches a plan. It is a doozy!
Her revenge plan takes up most of the book. It isn’t until the last 20-30 pages that the hero finally gets clued in to everything that has happened to him at the hands of the h. It’s a good thing he handles pressure well, or the h might have had a major plane crash on her conscience, because her antics would have driven me to drink. I was definitely team hero on this book. Not only did he fall in love with her 1x, but he fell in love with her a 2nd time and stayed in love with her even after he found out all her treachery. Married life won’t be all bad for him though, because she has a lot to be forgiven for. I can picture it now………..
h: Hey, babe it’s your turn to take out the garbage… H:Hmm, I’m really tired and that reminds me of the time you treated me like garbage…remember when..(h takes out garbage)
OR: h: My turn to pick the out the vhs…I choose Sleepless in Seattle……. H: Are you sure? It reminds me of the time we first go together flying on airplanes….You know when you broke my heart and accused me of planting drugs on you? (Heroine quickly puts in Die Hard and the H gets a massage to boot!) OR FINALLY….. h: I have a headache…. H: Yeah, but remember that time you…..(h lays on bed and prepares for landing)["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Totally crazy, but totally awesome, all at the same time.
Lyn and Beric are lovahs, and both work for Air International - she has a flight attendant, he as a Pilot. She's innocent and doe-eyed, and he's a suave charmer. Of course he's into her virginal image, and they are happy as anything. Unfortunately, Lyn is searched at an airport in the US and found to have cocaine in her bag. Through her own stupidity, she believes Beric has framed her (it's totally obvious what happened, and neither of them are very smart throughout this) and when she gets sent to prison, she decides she hates him and must have her revenge.
Cue a bat-sh*t crazy plan! Woo! She has plastic surgery to turn herself into a Gwyneth Paltrow lookalike, and gets a job in Singapore, insinuating herself into Beric's life. The reviewer who says she uses 'The Rules' to enslave him is soo right. She plays completely hard-to-get and he falls for it, bigtime.
I won't spoil how she wrecks his life, but her revenge is certainly complete. I think what is most troubling about this book is the way that after she basically rips out his heart and puts it in a blender, she goes about her life with no issues at all.
How they end up together is a mystery, but it's pretty cool that Wentworth managed to make us believe they could put the past behind them. Smooth, evocative writing and a great plot. They don't write Harlequins like this anymore!
For every one who hates Sally Wentworth uber macho aggressive males here is the perfect antidote, a woman as cold and hard as steel who really goes all out to punish the man she believes betrayed her, pretending to love her and then framing her for drug smuggling. Lyn spent years in jail and when she comes out she forms an elaborate plan of revenge. The plan, to make Beric fall in love with her all over again, marry him, and then make him believe she's been kidnapped and killed. IN other words make him suffer torments.
HOw this all pans out in the end makes for a fascinating and highly readable story. Sally has a very distinctive style and her alpha heroes are over the top for this very PC modern world. Her heroines are often surprising and in this story at first glance she seems unlikeable. Luckily we catch glimpses of the real woman under the cold mask of the woman who emerged from the prison system. For her we want a HEA though with so much between them its hard to imagine it all coming right at the end.
The third book I read this past week with the revenge by heroine plot and the best of the bunch.
She had a cold heart, her actions were calculated to the "T" and she would go to any length to get her revenge.
As a reader looking at what originally took place, you knew he was not the culprit and if she used her high intelligent brain for few minutes without being judgmental, she would have seen it too.
I was disgusted by her selfish parent especially her mother.
I was happy when she changed her original plan of revenge, planting drugs on him, to instead the new plan to marry him, and then make him believe she's been kidnapped with no trace to be found.
I didn't believe she really loved him... no where even close as he loved her, hence the 4.5 stars instead of a 5.
Unpopular opinion but I could barely continue reading this book. The h was crazy and her escapades were just not ending. It was a fool’s chase to go through such non reversible physical changes, just to take revenge on someone. Didn’t sit well with me. I felt bad for the H who had to be duped twice without any fault of his. The h was quick to making judgements and wrong ones at that.
Didn’t find the mc’s chemistry anything to write home about either.
4 1/2 Stars ~ Seeking adventure, 19 year old Lyn trained and became a stewardess and three months into her first job she's on the UK - Miami flight crew. Beric is the handsome Senior First Officer and he's taken an immediate shine to Lyn. Knowing of her innocence, he courts her and they slowly fall in love. Returning to the UK, there was a surprise customs check and much to Lyn's shock they discover a talcum powder container of pure heroine in her carry bag. With no answer as to how it had gotten there, Lyn found herself charged. Just before her conviction she thinks back to all who could have planted the drugs and can only come up with Beric's name. When she confronts him he denies it and accuses her of trying to set him up for her own crime. The jury doesn't believe Beric planted the drugs and convict Lyn to a three year sentence of hating and plotting her revenge. She befriends another inmate and quickly she learns how with money from an inheritance, she can easily change her appearance and identity. Upon her release she hires a private detective to find Beric and learn his routines. With a new face, new hair, coloured contacts and a false passport, Lyn becomes Netta and she's a teacher for English students in Singapore where Beric and his flight crew have regular layovers on the Malaysia route. What starts out as a plan only to get close enough to be able to plant drugs on Beric, turns into something far more sadistic.
Ms. Wentworth has a talent for creating such vengeful heroines. Lyn's hate is understandable, as is her need for justice. I was thoroughly impressed with the whole revenge plot, so deftly carried out and utterly believable. I felt so sorry for Beric who even Lyn had noticed had become cynical in the three years she'd been away. We're given a few other hints into Beric and how he'd been terribly hurt and felt betrayed when Lyn had accused him of framing her. And as a true hero, he admits that had the shoe been on the other foot he'd have sought vengeance too. Lyn's mortification at what she's done to an innocent man is well done and redeems her. This a dark and angsty story, one that I'll not soon forget.
I read this a long time ago but never reviewed it. I won’t go into detail now since many other reviewers have already done so.
I just have to say this is one of my favourite harlequins. Not because I particularly liked the characters, but because it was just so well done. The story just gripped me from beginning to end. Unputdownable!
The heroine plans the perfect revenge on the Hero for his betrayal of her, causing her to spend 3 years in Jail and in consequence lose everyone she values. She uses her time in jail fine tune her plan. She executes it perfectly, in cruel cold blood and It goes off masterfully.
Then, she goes on with her life!!!!
The story and the resolution for the couple only come about because she is caught by the Hero, more than a year later, and only by coincidence!
It is also still a bit of a loose end HEA because his “wife” is still missing. He will have to annul his first marriage and explain to everyone that his second wife is an exact carbon copy for his first Wife but with different hair colour. 😳

The first M&B I've read where the heroine is out for revenge rather than the hero. And she's icecold about it. I felt sorry for what happened to the h at the beginning, especially that she had no support from her parents. But I felt even sorrier for the H, as it was clear from the start that everything was a misunderstanding. The story focuses more on the revenge part and it forgoes the usual starry eyed heroine. That what makes it rather outstanding for a Mills & Boons romance. I can highly recommend it.
Wow! Simply wow! Very, very entertaining. There has to be a willing suspension of disbelieve but overall, the it was very interesting. It pulled me irrevocably right from the first sentence. There was never a dull moment and kept me hooked to it. A real page turner. They don't make them like they used to. Don't miss this one, specially if you love an angst filled, second chance at love romance laced with revenge.
Oh I seem to like these revenge novels when the revenge is served by the heroine. Oh boy did she make the hero suffer. I guess I must have a sadistic side because I like it when the hero suffers. I was so into this book I finished it in a few hours.
Things you may or may not like about this book: 1. hero smokes 2. revenge 3. heroine spends time in prison
I'm gonna say 4.5 stars. It started off slow for me and I couldn't quite get to liking our heroine, hence the half star knock-off. I suppose I can see how she thought Beric had been the one to betray her but, let's not beat around the bush, I'm not giving any spoilers by saying he's, of course, innocent! 'Twouldn't be a romance novel if he wasn't!
It was boring throughout her initial plans to serve him a similar sauce to the one she thought he served her, and all through her connivance I kept thinking, this is gonna end badly. Boy, did it nearly! Since when in an HP are we allowed to think of the Hero as the victim? This guy was about to get it, and he didn't even have it coming.
It started to to pick up for me as her simple plot became a more complex one, morphing almost all the time through the book until it took on such dynamic and soapy proportions it literally sucked me in. She creates such a hell for this innocent man I began to wish he'd run away and leave her when all was revealed (a sentiment usually reserved for the fairer sex). However, the writer had an uncanny way of knowing every point where all sympathy for the heroine would be lost. She'd then hit us with an introspective that reemphasized the urgency of her need, and, if she'd been right in her suspicions, justification for such a cruel brand of revenge; it's truly shocking, and downright entertaining, how far she takes it.
Finally, it ended perfectly in my opinion. Of course they end up together, but how it was handled by the author made it feel 'right' in a way I think must have been a hard feat for Ms. Wentworth to accomplish.
Oh my God, this is so good. Nothing like other HP I've read so far. The feels were more like a spy novel. I just loved the way Lyn extracted her revenge. It's just too bad that Beric didn't really deserved it, of course Lyn didn't know that at the time, but Beric was a nice man. He supported Lyn until she started to accuse him of framing her. And I don't blame him from protecting himself, they were only dating for couple of months and their love wasn't strong enough to face this kind of obstacle yet. I loved how Lyn grew to be a strong and smart woman, and even though it mostly came from her hatred to Beric, she still had her kindness. We need more like this kind of heroine. Other spineless heroines need to take a class with Lyn to learn how to get back to all those jerk heroes who treated them badly.
