Britta Benke, born in 1960, studied art history, classical archaeology and romance languages and literature in Göttingen, Münster and Bonn. Georgia O'Keeffe is the main focus of her research and also the subject of her dissertation.
This is automatically one of the most precious books I own. I lust over big glossy art books that I cannot justify buying because I can get around ten novels for the same price - my 5 year old nephew has clearly noticed me drooling in bookstores - he gave me this for Christmas because his school had a used book sale and he saw this and used his own money to buy this it me 'because it is just like those fancy ones'
He's not that far off - the reproductions of her work are pretty great and in full colour. And some great black and white photographs of the artist.
Because it aimed at kids, the information is limited but it has most of the relevant biographical stuff about the artist, her life and her work. Refreshingly, there is much less of the waffle and occasionally art-snobby text than in the adult counterparts.
Plus it has a recipe for ice-cream :) what more could you want?
Georgia O’Keeffe, The Artist in the Desert is a nice picture book biography with a great layout of information and beautiful photos. Of the 4 or 5 children’s biography books I have read on this remarkable woman, this is my favorite. A wonderful addition to any elementary/middle school library or classroom.
Well done ES NF. Interesting! Understandable! Age appropriate with the right amount of text! Great fun! What's especially nice is how the book connects the things that inspired O'Keefee to specific works, pointing out things to notice (for example, how elephant-like the hills were) in the art. Recommended. I only wish it came in hardcover
