This book explains to those who govern schools how to establish the policies, tests, staff training, and resource allocation to assure that 90% of third graders read at or above grade level. It shares what one school district has done and continues to do to have students reading early and well.
Lynn Fielding has served for over twenty years as a director of Kennewick (WA) Schools (15,000 students), eight years as a director of the Washington State School Directors Association, and is the senior director of the Northwest Evaluation Association. He has presented at numerous National and State School Board Association and other conferences including Nebraska, North Carolina, Iowa, Alaska, Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. Co-founder of The Children's Reading Foundation, initial author of its READY! for Kindergarten curriculum, co-author of three books, and single author of another, Mr. Fielding presents and consults with school districts interested in leveraged educational reform from birth through grade 12. With an LL.M. in taxation from Georgetown University, he is a tax and business lawyer.
Insightful, but full of statistics. The authors are sort of alarmist when they make their argument that increasing literacy could directly improve a lot of other areas of political life, but they make some great points and have me convinced.
