This is one of those titles that some say has rape in it and others don't. The issue of consent is different to western culture entertainment and fetishes then to eastern. In many, many Japanese manga etc the issue of consent is more action based (ie are they running away? hitting? etc) and the vocalized words of "no", "don't", etc aren't taken as strongly as in American culture. So, depending on your own personal viewpoint of this subject, you will have your own opinion about whether this title, and others like it, contain rape or not. As for me, since I'm reading an eastern story I try to pay attention to the intent of the mangaka. Most mangaka will let you know clearly whether THEY are including the issue of rape in their stories so that's what I mostly go by. As far as Bloody Kiss Tonight is concerned I don't believe the intent is rape between the main characters but if you're sensitive to the subject of consent then you'll want to be aware of it.

On the issue of the storyline itself, there's nothing really original here. Basically it's your typical vampire hunts human, they develop feelings for each other, etc. If you like vampire stories then you'll enjoy this one but if you don't enjoy the typical vampire/human plots then you might want to pass this one by.

Rating: NC-17
Artwork: B
Originality: C
Plot: C

This mangaka is hit or miss with me. Read too many of her books and they all tend to blend together, and that's not a good thing.

I loved the premise of this manga, but it seemed rushed.

And here we have another vampire story by, wait for it, Makoto Tateno.

Honestly I do not go out searching for work by Tateno, it just happens to fall into my shopping cart and make it home to a place of honor on my yaoi bookshelves. Yes, I said shelves. I'm up to 3 full now. No wonder I'm broke. Any whooooo...

There are three Vampires in this tale. The main story is Riku and Keito, Needless to say this is a little bit fucked up. Keito keeps searching out a particular soul lifetime after lifetime because they are mated. Each previous lifetime his lover betrayed him and he was killed. So the big question is why the hell is he still searching for that soul? Masochistic or what. Riku, a highschool student, happens to be the reincarnation of that soul. Keito tracks him down, follows him home and attacks him at night - aka rape. Finally Keito threatens Riku's family to get him all to himself. In the end, three vampires become four.

Next offering is Yasuhara and Saisei (my favourite story in the book) a librarian and a Vampire. Yasuhara sees Saisei eating dinner and calls him on it. Saisei's 'words' don't work on him and he gets a big case of fascination with the little bookworm. Once again, the vampire threatens the librarian into sexual congress otherwise he is going to treat the library as his personal smosgabord. Saisei ends up getting too much of a good thing... Need I say more.

The final story is almost an afterthought. There are three vampires on the cover so there should be three stories. Minato and Natsuhi, dying kid and vampire. Natsuhi finds Minato staggering around and finds him cute. He sucks his sickness then ends up putting himself into his coffin to recover. Minato is cured and vows to wait for his "god" to return.

Buy it. You'll like it.

A Bloody Kiss Tonight is a great example of what I expect in a yaoi manga. It was great in general as a manga, not just as a "yaoi manga." The sexuality, while it was there in spades, did not get in the way of the plot of the story, it added to it.
I really liked every character, as well. I particularly loved the initial story between Riku and Keito. The concept alone was really interesting, which I won't give away, but I thought it was very unique. Not everyone may think so, but I enjoyed their backstory. Keito was also my personal favorite character. He doesn't believe he can have human emotions, but clearly, we can tell as a reader that he just doesn't understand that he totally does. I would love to see this more explored, but this brings me to my only beef with the book: It's a stand-alone!! I wish there was more! The story was left too open-ended for me to be completely satisfied. It wasn't that the pacing was rushed, but I expected there to be more to the story because it was a good one. I want this to be a series!!
I suppose my only other concern I had was that Riku looks much younger on the cover than he is in the book. I'm not sure if this was on purpose or what, but it did concern me at first glance. I had to make sure he was older on the inside before I purchased a copy, which he is, but it might throw a lot of people off. So don't worry, he is clearly not 12 years old in the actual story.
Overall, I thought this was a great yaoi and a great manga, but I really wish there was more. I'll still give it 10/10, but now I'll have to look into Makoto Tateno's other works to try and fill the Keito-shaped void.

First of all it was a challenge to get this book. DMP has such low print runs lately that the books sell out and become rarities which Amazon and eBay sellers take full advantage of to jack up the price on the rarest books. This being one of them. I completely missed when it was first printed and since Makoto Tateno is one of my favorite mangaka on to stalk it was. I put this on my Amazon wishlist and waited. And waited. Then waited some more. Then suddenly, there it was for $10 after months of not going under $60. Of course 3 days after I bought it jmanga opened and it had this book. It's still not available to buy, but it's likely just a matter of time. C'est la vie. I'm still pretty happy with my paperback copy.

Now on to the actual manga. What can I say. It totally deserves being sold out. Art is gorgeous and the vampires are actually *gasp* mean spirited with no concept of human emotions. I'm actually pretty disappointed there's no more. And there was so little of Natsuhi's story. The whole thing just left me wanting more.

There's plenty of non-con in this book and sometimes I just think too much about being politically correct. It's BL, they're evil vampires. Just roll with it, sometimes it's good for the system. Deliciously pretty stress relief. Onto the favorite shelf this goes.

Makoto Tateno is one of my must-buys when it comes to manga. I'm a huge fan of Yellow and many of her other titles, including Red Angel, which was not a BL story, but quite excellent. Unfortunately, A Bloody Kiss Tonight, despite her trademark bishonen men (who are still very manly) and her talent for crafting creative storylines, just didn't quite seal the deal for me because the two main lust/love objects of the vampires, Riku and Nanao, look far too childish. That is a huge squick factor for me--the barely-legal-looking uke--and one I tend to avoid whenever possible. The saving graces, of course, are the super-sexy vampires Keito, Saisei and Natsuhi. Tateno returns the vampire to its rightful place as amoral predators rather than the defanged and/or emo discoballs they've become of late. However, as compelling as the individual vampire storylines were and as hot as the dub-con scenes might have been, both baby-faced Riku and Nanao just ruined the impact for me.

Overall:
A for the artwork, which is always top-notch
A for the intriguing storyline
C for the barely-legal looking ukes

Beautiful, steamy, sexy, and so very dubious in consent, melding at times into no consent in a way vampires often get away with. Be warned.

I was as overwhelmed as the victims. There’s a little bit of vampire mythology, mingling and seasoning the sex and steam along with a sense of the hunt. A vampire stalks his prey, but there’s always a twist to the climax, a curious arc with the victim which puts the vampire in peril, making the reader wonder for a moment whom the hunter truly is. Except for the one story where the vampire does something nice for the victim he tastes, a refreshing nibble of something almost fluffy and feel good.

The sheer steam rising off each page made me simply lean back and enjoy the ride. If you think you will, too, in spite of my warnings, enjoy.

Not a manga I would usually pick up but why not give a try. I'll admit the art style is pretty but there are definitely better yaoi manga out there. The story didn't feel complete and the characters a bit one-dimensional.

I love Makoto Tateno style, artwork and plot. This time we have star-crossed lovers reincarnated, over and over again, one human one vampire. Once Riku realizes what’s happening he’s determined to break the cycle. Yes, a HEA ending.
