Last Man Standing #1

A Little Bit Wicked

Rate this book
Who will be the last unmarried man standing?

No man in his right mind would want to get married, but every duke, earl, and viscount knows that a fellow must do his duty in the end. So four of London's most desirable gentlemen make a wager—the prize going to the one who remains unwed the longest.

Gideon Pearsall, Viscount Warton, thinks he has a fair shot at winning. After all, he's managed to enjoy the favors of many a lady while resisting the parson's noose. Even when he's stopped dead in his tracks by the most scandalous woman in all of London—Judith, Lady Chester—he vows to have her bedded but never wedded.

Beautiful, and more than a little bit naughty, Judith has always kept herself within the bounds of respectability, even while playing by her own rules. And the experience has taught her to avoid marriage. She has no desire to resist Warton's hot kisses, and his tempting touch is impossible to ignore.

But soon both Judith and Gideon can't help but wonder . . . is it possible to be a little bit wicked and still follow your heart?

Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name. See this thread for more information.

New York Times bestselling author Victoria Alexander was an award winning television reporter until she discovered fiction was much more fun than real life. She turned to writing full time and is still shocked it worked out.

Since the publication of her first book in 1995, she has written thirty-one full length novels and six novellas. The Perfect Wife—originally published in 1996 and reissued in March 2008—hit #1 on the New York Times list. Sixteen of her books are bestsellers hitting the New York Times, USA Today and/or Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. With books translated into more than a dozen different languages she has readers around the world and has twice been nominated for Romance's Writers of America prestigious RITA award. In 2009 she was given a Career Achievement Award from RT Bookclub and was named Historical Storyteller of the year in 2003. In 2008 she was the keynote speaker for the Romance Writers of American annual conference in San Francisco. Victoria credits much of her writing success to her experiences as a reporter.
Her years as a broadcast journalist were spent in two radically different areas of the country: Nebraska and West Virginia. In West Virginia, she covered both natural and manmade disasters. She was on the scene when a power plant construction accident in a small town left 52 men dead. She once spent the night on a mountain waiting to learn of the fate of coal miners trapped in a mine collapse. Victoria was producing a newscast when her husband (who worked at the same television station) and several other journalists were held hostage by a disturbed Vietnam veteran. In Nebraska, she reported on the farm crisis and watched people lose land that had been in their families for generations. She covered the story that was the basis of the movie BOYS DON’T CRY and once acted as the link between police and a gunman who had barricaded himself in his home. Her investigative work exposed the trucking of New York City garbage to a small town dump in rural Nebraska.

During her journalism career, Victoria covered every president from Ford to Clinton. She knows firsthand what it feels like to be surrounded by rising floodwaters and inside a burning building. She’s interviewed movie stars including Kevin Costner, ridden an elephant and flown in a governor’s helicopter. She’s covered a national political convention and Pope John Paul II’s historic visit to Denver as well as small town festivals celebrating everything from walnuts to Glen Miller. Her work was honored by numerous organizations including the Associated Press who called a feature about a firefighter’s school "story telling genius". It was the encouragement she needed to turn from news to fiction. She’s never looked back.

Victoria claims her love of romance and journalism is to due to the influence of her favorite comic book character: Lois Lane, a terrific reporter and a great heroine who pursued Superman with an unwavering determination. And why not? He was extremely well drawn.

Victoria grew up traveling the world as an Air Force brat. Today, she lives in Omaha, Nebraska with her husband and her dogs. Victoria had two bearded collies, Sam and Louie (named from characters in one of her books). Sam (on the left), the best dog in the world for 13 ½ years, passed away in September 2010. Louie took on the position of loyal companion and did a fine job even though he doesn't understand that kitchen counter surfing is not allowed!

Now he's been joined by Reggie, also a faithful companion.

They all live happily ever after in a house under constant renovation and the accompanying parade of men in tool belts. And never ending chaos. Victoria laughs a great deal—she has to.

For me, one of the weakest romance novels.

A couple meets and for nearly 100 pages they carry on with casual, superficial bantering, for example: "Do you feel wicked frequently?" "Why do you ask?" "Curiosity. Nothing more than that." The author claims they are drawn to each other as they have never been drawn to anyone else before. I found that hard to believe based on superficial chit chat. Page 145 states "Anything they disagreed on, they disagreed on with fervor. Which was every bit as much fun as agreement." However, there is no dialogue showing one of these fun disagreements. I would have preferred to hear an interesting debate on a specific subject to show their intelligence, wit, humor, etc. I heard nothing to make the characters interesting or impressive. Most dialogue throughout the book seemed to be about how do I feel, what will I say about how I feel, what does he feel. I wanted to stop reading in the middle, but I forced myself to finish it. I was glad to be done.

3.5 stars! Her reason as to why she couldn't be with him was a bit annoying and didn't make sense. But I loved how easily I was able to continue reading the book and I liked the two characters together. She's also such a proud character and strong too.

A Little Bit Wicked is book 1 in Victoria Alexander's "Last Man Standing" series. These 4 guys make a little bet about who will be the last one to get married, although it isn't REALLY a big deal--they're just 4 friends and whoever wins only gets 4 shillings and a bottle of cognac, or some such.

Anyway, so this book is about Gideon Pearsall, Viscount Warton, who we find out in the prologue has been married before and is QUITE cynical about love and marriage and all that--he has ZERO intention of EVER falling in love again, though he knows he'll have to get married and beget an heir and all that... but he's just cynical.

So, then there's Judith, Lady Chester, who is a widow (of Lucian, Baron Chester, so she's a Baroness)... and basically Judith and Gideon met eyes across the room at a party and felt a spark. So, since Judith is a widow, and widows can do whatever they want, they strike up a little arrangement. They become lovers (without the love)... and each end up falling for the other.

But both of them have CRAP that happened to them in their pasts that they aren't having such an easy time letting go of... I thought I really understood what was going on with each of them--and I think you kinda DO get his side of the story fairly early on, but her side... you only know about half of it until about 50 pages from the end. So I was like, "Ummm... get over it already, Judith!" But then I got to the explanation of what was REALLY going on in her head.... HOLY COW...

I cried. I haven't cried during a book in a while. Not since Eclipse, I think. Holy cow, Eclipse... but this book was just so good. Very cathartic at the end. It was quite surprising for a romance novel!

So, my first Victoria Alexander book was really good! I'd give this book 4 1/2 stars if I could! :)

Have you ever loved a story and wanted it to be over simultaneously? That’s how I felt reading this book. The plot was fun and the characters were likable and yet…

Judith was a great heroine- she defied norms of the times (had lovers when her husband died) and she was powerful/wealthy. Gideon was a likable hero and definitely a good man. Their chemistry was totally believable, in spite of the fact that I don’t feel like we got to see them interact much other than a few well written fights.

But I hated Judith’s attachment to her dead husband. The abuse she experienced at his hands was horrifying (but not surprising, it’s alluded to numerous times simply though obscurity). I hate the plot line where the woman blames herself for the death of the man who was horrible to her because she didn’t…forgive him? Like actually what the heck.

And I hated Lady Braxton. I think her scenes were the hardest I’ve cringed while reading a romance novel. Oof. Just yikes.

But I really did have fun reading this book. The story was different than the others I’ve read and it cast a different light on Regency. I liked that.

A continuation from the Effington series. The Last Man Standing is about the 4 friends of Jonathan Effington. After his marriage to Fiona the four men put down a wager on who would resist marriage the longest.
Gideon Pearsall Viscount Warton
Oliver Leighton Earl of Norcroft
Nigel Cavendish future Viscount
Daniel Sinclair, American. Who was suppose to marry Oliver's cousin Fiona by arranged marriage. Neither wanted it and she married Jonathan.

Four shillings and a bottle of Cognac to the winner.

Gideon had met Judith, Lady Chester, at her Twelfth Night Ball. Something had definitely passed between them. A widow for 10 years with no scandals, and a few "adventures". Jonathan had been one of her "adventures" and only a few others.

Judith had a marriage she said was a love match and she could recite it quite well. Married at 17 and widowed at 20. She had wealth and freedom.

She made sure she never let anyone else have her heart. Any "adventures" were short. And they parted as friends. Gideon was different. She was pulled towards him stronger then any other man.

Gideon had his own marriage ghost. Used by Violet to make her fiance jealous.

Another grand adventure by Victoria Alexander.

Judith and Gideon. Since Judith is a widow she has had various lovers (less than 5). However, one of them is the hero in the Effington's Series Let It Be Love and one of Gideon's best friends. She was the lady that Jonathan had selected to have another one night stand with at the traditional Christmas ball. Though they had already had sex with each other in the past so I guess it was more of a planned friends with benefits type sexual encounter. Apparently every once and awhile- he was one of the few guys she would meet up with for some sexy time and vice versa. So, for me, from the very beginning this felt too much like a cr except using her being a widow as an excuse for having sexy times with others. Stuff happens and they do fall love, but knowing she was Jonathans lover kind of got to me. I think I would have preferred if all her other lovers would have been random guys that I had not already read their romance story.

Victoria Alexander is HEAVY on the details- people, clothing, furnishings, internal thoughts ect. I think that Victoria Alexander has a dense writing style, and that is something that I do enjoy. However, if you are looking for light, easy reading, she might not be the author for you.

I especially appreciate how Alexander constructs how characters speak. I feel that many HRs, especially in the last ten or so years, have yielded a rather casual manner of character speech. While this isn't completely disturbing to me, I will admit that I prefer it when characters have a more proper speech pattern and phrasing. With that being said, Alexander is dialog-heavy. It often feels like a tennis match while reading conversations. In this particular book, I feel like the same thing was being hashed out over and over between different character pairings. It got boring.

As for Gideon and Judith, neither of them is "for me." Neither of them can forget the past- their own and each other's. Gideon is a kind enough hero, but is he swoony? Nope. Judith feels one-dimensional and is not an interesting heroine. I found the amount of times Gideon and Judith spent tossing around the idea of them being in love with the other to be taxing. It simply occurred over and over- in conversations with others and within their internal thoughts. We get it- you feel conflicted- but does love need to come and slap you in the face for you to realize or what?

Overall, I found this to be a frustrating read that was a bit dull, even as a re-read.

As for steam, readers will not need to wait long for the steam to roll in, although this is a low steam book. Alexander uses a mixture of explicit and implied terms.

A Little Bit Wicked (ALBW) is book 1 in the “Last Man Standing series” which basically centers around four bachelors making a bet to see who can avoid marriage the longest.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
ALBW focuses on two hurt souls- Gideon and Judith both of which have quite the sordid past. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Gideon is the ultimate cynic after being hurt in the past and he vows to never fall in love again. Judith is a widow and apparently for widows the “rules do not apply”. They both meet, sparks fly and they decide upon a most unconventional arrangement.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Honestly, I kinda loved Gideon more as I emotionally connected with him and his story a bit more than Judith who for some reason the author decided to horde all juicy information until the very end !!!! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The secondary characters in the book, while I understand are important for continuity and drama, were kinda flat and detracted from the overall story IMO.⁣⁣
⁣
Their banter was cute and witty and the plot line was slightly predictable but it was overall a lovely story about facing your ghosts of the past, opening yourself up to new adventures and the beauty of second chances ❤️ ⁣⁣

Judith, Lady Chester adalah janda yg banyak skandal, bergonta-ganti kekasih. Gak heran Gideon, Lord Warton, si duda cerai kepincut dgn janda ini yg menawarkan hubungan tanpa ikatan, hanya senang-senang, suka sama suka, yg sangat sesuai dgn keinginan Gideon utk tetap melajang.

Konflik terjadi karena Judith dan Gideon sering berantem berdebat, berbeda pendapat satu sama lain, tetapi tidak menggoyahkan mereka utk meneruskan hubungan terlarang mereka. Hingga bermunculan mantan-mantan kekasih Judith dan juga mantan istri Gideon yg bertekad kembali menikahi Gideon.

Sebenarnya Judith punya rahasia kelam ttg kematian almarhum suaminya, yg berefek dia selalu menyalahkan dirinya sendiri.

Sonunu Bile Bile (Last Man Standing Serisi 1)
Victoria Alexander

A Little Bit Wicked is a quick and light read that is delightfully funny. The Last Man Standing is a four book series telling of four men who each bet they will be the last man to remain unmarried. Though I really liked Judith and Gideon’s characters, I found the plot of the book to be quite predictable. I love tension that leads to a great Happily Ever After but this book was lacking in that area. Still I thought it was a good read.

Gideon Pearsall, once in love, was married but the marriage was annulled the very next day. It turned out his bride was using him to make her current fiancé jealous so he was left heartbroken. Because of this he decides that he is in no rush to ever marry again and definitely not for love. Lady Chester has been a widow for 10 years and has had a few love adventures along the way but secrets from her late husband’s death keep her getting serious with anyone. One night Gideon and Judith meet and share a passionate night and from that night forward they decide to enjoy their affair with no strings attached. The rules are that love and marriage will never be involved and both can end the affair at anytime. Somewhere along the way they both develop a love for one another that they've never experienced before but mistakes from their past relationships put a hinge on their relationship. It’s not until Judith discovers the truth about her late husband’s death that she is able to let herself be with Gideon. They are a match completely wrong for one another but they make each other happy and that’s all that matters… =)

In A Little Bit Wicked, Judith, Lady Chester has always had a taste for the little pleasures in life, but still lives on the edge of respectability. Judith is beautiful, practical and enjoys life to its fullest. Judith comes across Gideon, Viscount Warton, and a simmering desire between them escalates to burning passion, for these two that are only looking for a lover, and no commitment. However what began has a intimate relationship with no love or affection, gradually turns into a adventure where love is the key to unlocking both of their hearts and learning to trust in each other and themselves...A Little Bit Wicked is the first installment in the Last Man Standing series by Victoria Alexander. This series is about four men that are close friends, and have made a wager on who is the last one to get married, since none of them desire the shackles of matrimony. Which I have read books from this author, however this is my favorite series other then the Effington series. The only complaint that I have is the heroine character, especially throughout the beginning of the story, she is more distanced and closed off from her emotions, and I found I enjoyed the Gideon's character more. Both characters suffer from pain in their past, but he is more open to her than she is to him. However This is a story where both of the main characters, are afraid to love again, but is a journey of self discovery and also a tender love story.Overall a wonderful love story.....and A MOST DELICIOUS READ!!!

CAUTION: this story contained a flashback domestic
violence/ rape scene (not involving the hero).
^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^

Gideon & Judith decided to have a casual fling which she
called an "adventure." She set down the conditions they'd
follow. She'd been a widow x 10 yrs and had had a few
previous "adventures" with men.

Gideon's former love, Violet, now a widow, re-surfaced.
She boldly claimed him as her 2nd choice. He expressed
disinterest. Violet put a hurtful scheme into motion.

I realize authors must create conflict in a story to move
the story along. IMO Violet, Aunt Louisa, & Alexandra
detracted rather than advanced the story.

Gid + Judith had interesting word-play whether teasing
or arguing. The author slowly grew their emotional
connection & vulnerability. This couple kept my interest,
in spite of the irritating & unspeakable elements.

So here is the story. I decided to read all the "A" author's on my bookshelf. This was my summer project. Well I have book 3 and 4 of the "Last man standing" series, so I have to get 1 and 2. This book is number 1 and I got it from the library. I am waiting for #2 from Amazon. Impatiently!! Because I really enjoyed this book. Two hurt souls, guarding themselves from hurt for different reasons, do not recognize love when they feel it. Judith has been psychologically bruised and feels guilty. Gideon was betrayed by the woman he thought he loved. The banter is funny and his thoughts very cute because he doesn't have a clue and that was very adorable. Well his betrayer shows up and tries to get him back through underhanded means, and Judith finally learns the truth about her husband from his sister. I hope we follow what happens to them in the next 3 books. Can't wait to read the next one.

The heroine is a slightly scandalous widow, keeping discreetly inside the edge of propriety with the lovers she takes. The hero is just as discreet, and quite willing to begin the affair she proposes. But things are more intense than both of them want. They come together and it's wonderful—until one or the other of them makes a misstep. They're both definitely products of their society and yet both uniquely individual. This is just a lovely, lovely story about two people who think they're beginning one thing and turn out to have begun something quite else. There's no intrigue—except involving their assignations—just wonderful characters and a grand falling-in-love tale.

Loved the book. Judith has been a widow for 10 yrs and has no desires to remarry because of how her marriage ended. Gideon knows he has to marry eventually a sweet, demure virginal bride but he doesn't want his heart involved. When his eyes meets Judith at a ball on twelfth night he knows he wants her and he wants the two of them to get a little bit wicked, ohhhh la la. Judith felt something also so when they finally meet at a musical it doesn't go accordingly like Judith's other adventures!! The characters have to realize that there are issues in their pasts that they need to resolve. It's a fun loving book when everyone is telling them they are so wrong for each other.

The timing for this was a bit off - I had just started reading it when I got an alert that another book I'd put on hold was again available. I'd renewed that hold several times because it's a library that only lets me borrow for 7 days. This has yet to be an issue, but I don't like feeling rushed. I did have a trip (ie train reading time) scheduled for the next day so figured it was time. Unfortunately, there was a technical problem and the train was not running when I needed to go, so there went that idea.
Sooo, I decided to finish reading this anyway (often at home I don't use my kindle).
I'd borrowed this from the virtual library because I have the next in the series on my TBR shelf where it's been sitting for a number of years.
The long introduction here is because I felt somewhat distracted the whole time I was reading this - as though I felt I should be getting on with the other book instead.
Here we have an in de pen dent woman who enjoys her plea sure. For some reason those words are consistently spaced out throughout the ebook I got from the library. The first time, which concerned the words plea sure - or pleasure - I wondered if it was some sort of message from the author. I think pleasure and independent were the only words where this happened, but I found it quite annoying. (Side note: Lately I seem to be stumbling over a great number of typos in the books I read, and not just the ebooks. Grrr).
The hero and heroine are a good match here, and it's a good read, even if I was distracted.

*****

"Gideon, Leydi Chester'dan çok hoşlanmış olduğumu bilmeni isterim. Onun hakkında söylediğin her şey de seninle hemfikirim. O parıltılı, eğlenceli, etkileyici ve sevimli. Bedeli bu kadar ağır olmasaydı onun hakkındaki tüm hislerini samimi dahi çıkarmadan onaylardım."

"Ona karşı duyduğum bir his yok," dedi Gideon hızla.

Kitabımız, Last Man Standing (son ayakta kalan adam) Serisinin ilk kitabı.

After reading all the books in this series, I finally read this one and I must say it pales in comparison. It was an alright book, nothing special.

I didn’t see any chemistry between them because I see they barely interacted and spent most of the time just pining for each other whenever they’re apart. Then Judith starts running away instead of talking to Gideon about her problems. Also, they fell in love way too fast so it was unbelievable when they did not even share much about themselves then boom after a few times in bed and moments with each other, they’re in love. Not buying it.

The plot was interesting. Unfortunately, I found it hard to like Judith. Gideon was alright. It disturbed me to see how they had to be pushed by other people to finally confess their feelings to one another.

Also though the title is a little bit wicked, I didn’t see much wickedness and had expected more. An ok book to pass the time but not good enough for a re read.

Judith has been a widow for 10 years now, and she occasionally has what she refers to as "adventures" where she allows a man to wine and dine her and eventually share her bed a few times before she ends it as she feels she's meant to be alone.
Gideon however manages to break all the rules on the first "date". These 2 are hot and heavy from minute 1, they also have a fairly honest and direct relationship. There is also quite a bit of humor in here, I especially liked how Gideon's friend tricked him about the first gift he gives to Judith.
Both have tragic backstories, hers is unfortunately violent but it's mentioned and not described in detail in case that's a worry for people.
I was super worried I wouldn't like the writing in here but only because I now have quite the stockpile of Victoria Alexander books but this is the first that I've actually read. Thankfully she has a nice writing style and I was engrossed in the story.

The witty and beautiful widowed Judith, Lady Chester, values the freedom she has. She now has the ability to play by her own rules, while skirting the fringes of society. That is until she meets the delectable Gideon Pearsall, Viscount Warton. While she enjoys their encounters, there casual fling turns into something more for her. Gideon has made a packed with some of his cloasest friends, a wager of sorts on who would be the last man standing before breaking down and getting married. He thought it was an easy win until Judith stole his heart.

The story was fun and witty, just as I would expect of Victoria Alexander. It did not have the same enthralling pull as some of her other stories but it was a good, fast read nonetheless.

This was a cute read and I was only planning on giving it 3*, but then I got to the scene in the hallway at Suzanna's party and started giggling. Then, I got to the scene at Violet's ball, when we (and Judith) finally figure out what was going on and that pushed it over the edge. I liked Judith and her guilt about her husband and his death was extremely understandable. I could not stand her sister in law, Alexandra, but she was redeemed a bit when she told us the truth about Lucian and his death. I liked Gideon and his relationship with his aunt and with his friends. He and Judith were good together and I look forward to seeing more of them in the upcoming books.

Just absolutely cliche’. And even though at times it’s cute and endearing, it’s absolutely maddening that the author uses her title to the book every other page “wicked” in some form or another. Just why. It’s not clever, just immensely annoying. The sex scenes are also badly written, and cliche’ and last all of a couple pages out of the entire book. I’ve read some amazing erotica novels, and this is not one of them.
