Overall this was a great book. The sketches of life in Hawaii during the 1800's are very interesting. The end of the book dealt mostly with the political turmoil relating to her husband's involvement with local government; his absence from the family during a trip to England and France in an attempt to settle a treaty and dispute over damages caused by the French.

It is most important to read the Historical Introduction to have a full picture of the political and social climate during her 20+ years as a missionary in Hawaii.
