I knew nothing about record keeping for high school before reading this book so it was very useful. I do agree with another reviewer that I wished she had used some more average student examples. I think some of her course descriptions seem excessive and I'm considering just going to with one paragraph including the topics covered list.

As I mentioned last week, we have started back with schoolwork, so I have a lot of school-related thoughts in my head right now. It's hard to believe that I have two high schoolers this year as Briana is entering her junior year and Destry is officially a freshman. I spent the first couple weeks of my summer reading Setting the Records Straight by Lee Binz, updating Briana's transcript, figuring grades, writing course descriptions, and planning for the future.

While I can't say I necessarily learned anything new from Lee Binz's book, I did appreciate her examples and encouragement, and most of all I gained motivation. If a parent really has no idea what to do for high school record keeping, or how to figure grades, or where to start with a transcript, her book would be a great resource. Even though I had previously researched this information, it was still good for me to read her book and then allow it to motivate me to actually sit down and DO it.

One challenge to parenting teens that I have encountered is helping them handle the pressure they feel to figure out what they want to do with the rest of their lives. Sometimes I think adults don't know what to say to teens, so they ask questions like "So, what do you want to be when you grow up? Are you making plans for college?" etc. I know we adults are well-meaning with these questions, but I have had to settle my kids and remind them that most people start college in one major and graduate with a different degree--and many people even start their career in one field but completely change careers several years later, many times making multiple career changes. There's really no need to feel pressure at the age of 14 or 15 to have your life plan all mapped out.

At the same time, I have to fight my own (self-imposed) pressure to offer them every opportunity for every class to learn everything they might possibly need to equip them for their lives. (phew!) Deep down I believe my responsibility is in the areas of shaping their character, preparing them to live for the Lord and teaching them a love for learning which will give them the tools to learn whatever they need to know as they grow and change. Sometimes, however, I get caught up in "keeping up with the Joneses" (whoever that is!) and worry about depriving them of some wonderful educational opportunity they need.

I get torn between conflicting philosophies. On the one hand, I agree with Lee Binz's philosophy:

Either I’m preparing my kids to be college-ready
or I’m providing them with the highest level of education they’ll receive,
so I need to make it good~Lee Binz, the Homescholar

On the other hand, I hear speakers recommend that students study subjects based on their individual interests rather than spending their time checking off classes considered "college prep" by our society at large. I don't know which philosophy is best, so meanwhile I continue one step at a time along my eclectic path trying to offer studies that appeal to their natural interests and giftings while also requiring subjects that expose them to ideas that would prepare them to excel in a liberal arts education.

As a homeschooler of a high school student, I found this book to be valuable! Not only does Lee Binz give sampels of homeschool transcripts, but also many samples of course descriptions. From a mother who has been successful at both homeschooling her children and helping them get into wonderful colleges with huge scholarships, she's someone you can trust to give you some great ideas.

My only complaint is that her children's experiences were incredible students who read widely, tested well, and were involved in many activities. It sets the bar high and I think very few families could relate to her families' experiences. I wish she would have also used some more 'regular' students and families as examples.

This is the best book I have found to help parents homeschooling high-schoolers prepare transcripts and organize their records. The book is written in an easy-to-read style, and contains lots of examples to follow in the back of the book. Don't wait until your student is a junior or senior in high school to read this book (although it will still help); parents of junior high kids will save themselves a lot of stress if they read this book early on.

4.5 stars. I'm grateful for the time Lee Binz has put into helping homeschoolers navigate college application processes. I love the examples and different methods possible for documentation that she talks about. I would love to have seen more details on how what her son's days actually looked like compared to how she wrote her transcripts and detailed descriptions because she says she did the descriptions after the fact.

I liked the many transcript examples and course description examples! It made it easy to see different ways people do it and then just pick the format I like best. The book also had helpful tips and guidance.

This book is a great help in homeschooling high schoolers. The explanations and examples of creating high school transcripts and course descriptions have been extremely helpful in my own homeschooling. Discovering this book early in my son's high school career is going to save me a lot of heart ache and problems later when he goes to apply to different universities and colleges.
My only complaint (and it's quite trivial) is the overwhelming number of explanation points used in the text. They just make the book feel less professional and more gushing. It was rather distracting. Perhaps I need to start up a club, "Readers Against the Misuse of Punctuation" or RAMP for short.
No doubt I will be reading this book again when college application time arrives.

This is a must-read for anyone currently homeschooling or those considering it but afraid of how they would homeschool the higher grades. Lee's clear explanations and easy process will empower any homeschooling mom or dad. Text book, online class, delight-directed study... Setting the Record Straight shows you how to create course descriptions for all of these and more. You'll walk away feeling like you just had a conversation with a close friend over coffee. Gentle and trusted. It's definitely money well spent!

This an easy to read, straight forward guide to writing your own high school transcripts. I was a little intimidated when she showed 3 years of latin and calculus on her sons' transcripts, but she really is encouraging about any parent's ability to not only homeschool through high school, but to also prepare transcripts that will get your kid into college.

This was straight forward, detailed, without extraneous information. I am a secular homeschooler, and while there is religious information, it is not so overwhelming as to be off-putting. I appreciate that she does not promote a particular curriculum or type of homeschooling, simple tells how to document what you have done and gives lots of examples of how to does so.
