A sexual Dominant playing the role of a submissive is the hardest role he's played, but if it means not losing the love of his life again…Diana McTavish has long held his heart and soul. Now that her abusive ex-Master is history, Matt's back in her life — permanently — however she needs him. But submissive Diana's had enough of being bruised and battered. She's taking control. And this time, the switch is up to her.
First published in 1996, Jacobs has sold close to fifty books and novellas. SANDSTORMS was a 2007 nominee for the prestigious ROMANTIC TIMES Reviewers' Choice award for best erotic romance. Her books have earned awards including the Passionate Plume (best novella, 2006, second place contemporary, 2008), the Desert Rose (best hot and spicy romance, 2004) and More Than Magic (best erotic romance, 2004). She has been a double finalist in separate categories of the EPPIES and From the Heart RWA Chapter’s contest. Three of her books have been translated and sold in several European countries.
A CPA and former hospital financial manager, Jacobs now writes full-time, with the help of Mr. Blue, the family cat who sometimes likes to perch on the back of her desk chair and lend his sage advice. He sometimes even contributes a few random letters when he decides he wants to try out the keyboard. (Most of the time Blue just curls up, hides his eyes with his paws...and sleeps!)
I really enjoyed the first book in this series, so I had high hopes and was looking forward to reading this book. However, I was very disappointed with it, and I believe that my disappointment rests with the heroine, Keely.
While reading this, one gets a very clear picture of our hero, Brad. You're told that he's been a hellion in his youth, but we get to see through his actions that he's grown up a bit and is looking to settle down, though he does wish to maintain his D/s lifestyle. However, his chosen partner, Keely keeps refusing to take the next step with him. Rather than move on to greener pastures, he continues to pursue her, hoping to win her over. When an early blizzard hits, he has the perfect opportunity to show her how things can be with him.
Keely, however, is extremely concerned with appearances, due to being made fun of when she was younger for her mother's life choices. She doesn't want to appear as a gold digger, for Brad is a bit well to do, so she pushes him away. She doesn't want to give the appearance that she's like her mother, needing to be treated like a dog, so she instead appears to this reader as though she's ashamed of the lifestyle and sneaks in and out of the BDSM club that Brad owns. We as readers are constantly beat about the head with her "inadequacies", compared to Brad, which becomes annoying very quickly. Then, seemingly out of the blue, and after only a few stolen moments of introspection, she changes her mind, and suddenly, she doesn't care about any of the things that she was using as roadblocks to their relationship. This gives the book its happily ever after.
We are able to see some of the progression of Jared's relationship from Roped, which is pretty much my only reason for keeping the book now. I'm reserving judgement on the series until I read Lassoed, but I don't think I'll be re-reading this one that much.
Brad's story--an aging rodeo circuit participant, well-to-do because of the oil wells on the Wyoming ranch, and owner of a BDSM dungeon in Laramie. Yet this "bad boy" is ready to settle down. His bones and muscles are still aching from the previous summer, and he is tired and bored of the steady but ever changing identity of his sexual partners. There is one sub who comes regularly to his dungeon--she works with him to the exclusion of all the other Masters, and yet she absolutely refuses to take their relationship outside this setting. It is a very interesting and revealing look-see into the character of a man who fully embraces BDSM but who understands that this is more about psychological control than about the administration of pain. Thought is was one of the more insightful novellas in this genre.
Brad’s in love with Keely and finds that his bad boy past is part of the reason she won’t commit to him. Keely’s from the poorer side of town and she carries emotional scars from her adolescence that she can’t seem to shake. Being forced together gives Brad the perfect opportunity to show Keely that in the bedroom he may be the Master, but in their lives she’ll always be his equal. Once again, this is a sexually explicit love story and I found the scenes to be well written and appropriate to the story.
I liked it. It was nice & sweet & very straight forward. No beating around the bush. Just 2 adults stating their fears & concerns all while working it all out. Makes me wonder, am I a Dom or Sub or a Switch. Hmmmm.
