Dear lord. That was a lot to unpack.
Not going to lie I think some of us have met our own version of Tommy Drake. The kind of person who is so charismatic, so twisted that you cannot help but give him what he wants. But once the darkness comes to the surface by that point it is already too late. As you find yourself trapped in the tangled Web of deception, possession and find your every move is controlled, watched.
It also opens the door to discuss how far some actors are willing to go to delve into a role. I mean we are all aware that power corrupts but this is a man who is willing to do anything to secure that power. Piper ends up being his co-star, for a popular method actor. This also opens the door to how far an actor takes method acting, when you consider the grim outcome of those who walk the line.
It also shows the darker side of the Hollywood glitz and glam. The pressures that actors face when taking on such high profile projects. Piper seems like a well put together, open minded young woman but even she gets dragged down and hypnotised by Tommy's charm.
Playing George Ward the mob boss in the movie, the lines between Tommy and George soon start to blur. A character that seemed styled on Fight Club, mixed with the character of Tommy Shelby.
Switching between the point of view of Piper and Tommy. Made for an interesting psychological deep dive as we watch Piper get twisted and manipulated by Tommy. Then we look at how truly twisted Tommy becomes as the lines blur continuously within his mind. Like a version of Split, do we truly know where Tommy ends and the others begin?
Eventually we get to the point where things turn brutal and deadly, yet Piper is still drawn to his darkness and depravity.
The amount of times I lobbed the book to the side frustrated with this strong minded woman getting pulled from pillar to post by Tommy. I'm surprised the book didn't become sentient and slap me back.
This guy uses and abuses her to breaking point and she STILL stays, but it's more than staying out of fear. It's like she has been conditioned to accept this, the fine line between love and hate. Pleasure and pain until she is finally pushed past her limit and you just pray that through all the brainwashing and abuse Piper can pull herself out of it.
By the next part I was hopeful, Piper was happy and things were progressing with her career and love life. A healthy relationship with Eddie seemed to be on the horizon. But Tommy comes back on the scene, stalking her and upping his body count along the way. Now Tommy is even more terrifying, more depraved and Piper was in serious trouble. Part 2 was a white knuckle ride of anxiety, fear for Piper and anyone close to her. Tommy's determination and manic mental state takes an even more horrifying turn when he finds a kindred spirit in Miles. As he desperately does anything and everything, to get Piper back making him go from Tommy Shelby to Patrick Bateman. The nail biting conclusion to this story is well worth it, with all the twists and turns put in place by the author.
You honestly wonder if Piper will make it out of this alive. The visualisations and detailed accounts of torment and sexual degradation is hard to put into words. But Morgan manages to do this with ease and while the first part is a slow build up, the second part dives right into the madness head on.
Seriously, can we talk about how gritty, dark and frantic this two part story is?

I saw this book and thought why not give it a go, and overall I like how you have 2 books in one but it just wasn't really for me, I saw how it's a dark twisty psychological read but I saw it all coming and I didn't really think there was a plot, it was more of a dark romance with a bit of thriller.

Now don't get me wrong I don't mind a good dark romance but I usually need a good plot to go with it but this just seems more about procession and just going to where I expected it from the start when I read the blurb and the title of the book.

The book was well-written and it did have some good part and suspense but for me it was just lacking that it factor.

The characters and the story kept me gripped to the very end.

Tommy reminded me of both Jared Leto and Tommy Shelby which I found incredibly attractive (probably shouldn’t but oh well), two of my favourite men, one of which is a method actor. There was also a hint of the way Jared portrayed the Joker in Suicide Squad.

I loved the way the dark themes are so intricately woven into the story of method acting and how they cope with the technique and celebrity stardom.
