Getting Comfortable: a Woman in the West

Rate this book
Jumping Cholla Press is very pleased to reissue Judy Elsley’s collection of essays Getting A Woman in the West. Originally published in 1997, these reflections on the difficult experiences of a contemporary feminist woman as she tries to find her place in the American Southwest remain engaging and relevant today. Judy Elsley combines searching insights into day-to-day experiences living and working in the forests and high country of the Arizona Strip, on the wild rivers of Utah and Arizona, and as a graduate student with her readings of other writers concerned with the environment and with feminist theory. She recounts her encounters with Edward Abbey and her experiences as one of his students, and she confronts his male-oriented perspective on the Southwest. We are sure that this reissue will make Elsley’s important work available to a new generation of women–and men–who care about the American Southwest and their place in it.
